Do you enjoy theatre, or do you enjoy ‘collecting’ theatre?
It often strikes ne that there seems to be a fairly significant group of theatre enthusiasts who operate in a similar way to how someone might have a desire to fill the gap in their collection of rare books/thimbles/artworks/ceramic pigs/football stickers etc. In other words the satisfaction is as much, or maybe even more, about completing the set than about the item/production itself?
It comes to mind quite often when people go to some considerable trouble to see alternatives or understudies in addition to the named lead, or sometimes instead of them. But even outside of that very specific behaviour which is often often linked with being an avid fan of a particular show, there are lots of examples where I get the impression that people see productions in order to get a feeling of completion. In fact people often say “it was nice to tick it off” in posts here. Are we really spending all that money to “tick it off”?
And then there’s the obligation factor. A literature buff who feels the obligation to watch that rarely performed Shakespeare because it’s on, when they've actually seen enough Shakespeare to last a lifetime and would much rather stay in with a curry.
I’ve tried to be a bit more selective about what I see recently, instead of just seeing things because there’s a hype, or because it’s convenient etc. But there’s still a feeling of “I should really see that” even when it may not appeal hugely. And I’ve been burned as a result *cough*Waitress*cough*. The daft thing is I dillydallied over booking it because my gut told me it wasn’t ‘me’. But now I can say I’ve seen it and join in the discussion. I have successfully ‘collected’ Waitress.
How about you? Collected anything lately?

This is a VERY relatable post, it's only in the last couple of years that I've managed to successfully convince myself that I don't *have* to collect shows like that. There was a time when I would have indiscriminately booked every single show at places like the National, the Royal Court, the Globe, the Hampstead, the Almeida, the Donmar etc.
What I've actually found quite helpful is experience; not only am I better equipped to have a very solid idea of which playwrights or directors I actively dislike and thus wish to avoid (I have managed to not see a single Pinter play this year, I'm very happy with this negative collection!), I also know which theatre spaces are more trouble than they're worth to book just for the hell of it. For instance the Dorfman is expensive with poor sightlines, the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse is uncomfortable with poor sightlines, the Royal Court Upstairs has terrible queue-jumping. I haven't ruled out these spaces all together, I'll still go to see things if they sound appealing or the word of mouth is good, but knowing how much I don't really like them if the show itself doesn't sound like it'll be worth the effort has made it SO much easier for me to just not book everything. And having the emotional permission to skip the Dorfman means I don't feel as compelled to see everything in the Lyttelton or Olivier either, it's very freeing.
I do still have a way to go though. And also maybe I'd be less relaxed about letting shows go if I hadn't already previously amassed such a collection. (For instance, I've seen every single Shakespeare play at least once, and more than a dozen King Lears means I'm definitely ready to let go of that one unless the casting is very special indeed, but still that's more King Lears than I ever really *wanted* to see.) Still, there's always something to aim for. I do imagine that one day I'll be the person who goes to the theatre once a month as a special treat, rather than at least twice on Saturdays just because that's what I *do*, one day, in the distant future...

I thought I only had this collecting instinct because I have Asperger's & have always been completionist about things, right from when I wanted all the Sylvanian families when I was 4 years old. I'm surprised that other, presumably normal, people may have the same problem.

I like the idea of collecting, for example , a playwright more than the actual execution. I would love to say I've seen all of Ibsen or Williams but often find an excuse not to go to a certain production.
Where I do go slightly doo-lally is with cast recordings and singers, but I do that with all forms of music and spend hours trying to 'complete' people. Nothing is more enraging than suddenly finding a song, album, performance you previously didn't know when you thought you'd 'ticked the box'
Am also a bit like it with authors, tending to try and read all they've written

I have to admit that back in ye Olden days I had a map of West End Theatres (and the National, Old Vic etc) and decided to visit them all to be able to cross them off - well highlight them in Pink.
33 years later, sob sob, I've still not completed them all. I decided that life was too short to see, for example, Saturday Night Fever or The Far Pavillions or any other show that didnt interest me if they were running in theatres that I needed to tick off.
Now I just collect in my datatbase of all of the actors and production staff.

Like Dawnstar , I have Asperger's so thought it was connected to that, but I definitely do. Back when I was a Wicked fan I made it my mission to see every cover in every role and now despite not really liking the show very much any more I feel like I have to carry this on so find myself trudging along reluctantly whenever there's a new understudy goat or something for the purposes of completion. Of those who've gone on in London since 2014 I think I've only missed one understudy Fiyero and one Boq even though I haven't really cared about catching covers for the last couple of years. I became a Six fan recently and saw Vicki Manser last week as Cleves after having seen Alexia before and sighed to myself as I realised now I'm gonna have to see all three swings, plus Grace's replacement, plus all future casts in every role they play/alternate even if I completely go off the show

Collecting/completionist tendencies are incredibly common. You are far from the only 4 year old who wanted all the Sylvanian families - those type of toys wouldn't have existed if that wasn't the case. I semi-joke about 'collecting' all the Doctor Who actors in stage roles - still need to catch Matt Smith in something! I expect I'll tick all the Shakespeare plays off the list at some point, though I'm not in a hurry and am willing to wait for well-reviewed productions.

On the still yet to visit - Queens Lyric Piccadilly Her Majesty’s Arts Lyric Hammersmith Jermyn Street Soho theatre

I've never been to the Ambassadors, Dominion, or Lyceum. I'm quietly confident I'll be able to pick up the former two in due course now that they're no longer housing long-running shows that just don't interest me, though clearly if I'm *ever* going to be able to tick off the Lyceum, I'm just going to have to bite the bullet and book The Lion King. (If you want to collect the Lyric without having to see Thriller, just wait until it's school holidays and you can go see something like The Gruffalo or Horrible Histories. ) Of all the Doctors still living, Tom Baker is the only one who taunts me by his refusal to just never perform anything on stage. I'm also personally gutted about John Hurt, I was SO CLOSE with The Entertainer...

Hmm. I got back into theatre three/four years ago so for a while felt the need to check out various writers, actors, directors, theatres I'd heard a lot about, a new-ish generation of actors I love on TV but hadn't yet had the chance to see on stage (the favourites I loved when younger disappeared off into film and TV) . Now I've ticked almost all of them off like a trainspotter and I've whittled it down to a small core group of unmissables, and I try to get to see all their work. I don't live in London so money and time are big factors - from now on its quality rather than quantity.

I'm also personally gutted about John Hurt, I was SO CLOSE with The Entertainer... Saw John Hurt in Heroes and Sylvester McCoy in Three Sisters and once was at the same performance as Peter Capaldi PLUS I once saw Tom Baker being accosted in Trafalgar Square by 2 men who were clearly telling him how much they loved him.

I've never seen him on stage, but he did once do the voice over on a TV series I appeared in in my capacity as "token girl who likes comics" so I feel that our paths have crossed. Sort of. Btw, I think he may have done the Dr Who stage show in the late 80s/early 90s, but you'd need a Tardis to see it.

It was Pertwee, Colin Baker and David Banks who played the Doctor in the early 90s tour.
Trevor Martin was the Doctor in a West End show back in the mid 70s.

I wish I could afford to collect Theatres. As an idea, maybe these magazine's that you can get to build a model ship/car over a few months can do one for theatres - BUILD YOUR OWN REPLICA LONDON PALLADIUM. 1st part 99p. £3.99 afterwards.

I've seen every 1st cover (& a number of 2nd covers) for all the WE casts up until the current cast. However when I totted up last year's theatregoing & realised I'd seen the show 23 times I decided enough was enough & I'm not going to try to see all the covers for the current cast. After 65 viewings I'm finding myself zoning out too often. I'm missing the Lyric and St Martins You should bite the bullet and see The Mousetrap, it's quite good and if nothing else means you've only got to wait for Thriller to close and something half decent to replace it to complete the set I can't believe you're not saying "Go & see Showstopper"! That's how I ticked off the Lyric. I'm trying to remember which WE theatres I haven't been in. I know I've not been in the St Martin's, Fortune or Ambassadors & I really cannot remember if I've been in the Duke of York's or not. Fortunately I'm not a theatre completionist!

I guess if I did collect anything theatre wise it would be Sondheim. I try to see every major production in London and a few regional and amateur ones too. I think the only one on my to do list is The Frogs.

I possibly collect roles played by certain people, there are about three people that I will watch in whatever they do but I don't quite know how far I'd go to see them, I have not had to deal with that test yet. I do think that if one of them ended up in say an Asian tour and that was the only place they were going to play that role I would have to give up the idea of seeing all roles. Let's say I collect them in all their UK roles.
In terms of theatres I definitely don't collect them but I would like to have seen something in all the West End theatres one day but I've not done any list checking so maybe I'm closer than I think.

Hello to my fellow aspies, Dawnstar and martello736 ! Nice to make an acquaintance! I am guilty of this, too, with a certain actor that will remain nameless (his first name begins with C and his last name is like Jedward but swap the letter J with an S and put it at the end). No matter how bad the production, I will strive to see every show he stars in (up to a point*), because even if the show is unbearable, at least I can gaze longingly at his face for 2 hours and get some enjoyment from that. (*Even I have my limits. He went to Australia for the entirety of 2017 and ofc I could not afford a return ticket all the way to Australia and back, and that's minus hotel/theatre ticket costs, so that will be a show I will forever regret not being able to witness. My only consolation was a load of bootleg audio recordings of the show popped up online, so I'm quite lucky in that respect.) And I've been trying to collect theatre programmes (and the occasional stub) of his past shows, as well as every show I go to see presently in the West End and beyond, with or without him starring in it. Idk what fascinates me about looking at old programmes but... Yeah, I do that. And HECK YES to david's BUILD YOUR OWN THEATRE magazine thingy mabob. The Globe would make an excellent candidate.

I've just checked and I've seen shows in 77 different "theatres" from the Sydney Opera House to a shipping container, 34 of which I've only been to once - and I'm still missing the likes of the Arts, Soho and Coliseum in London.
I'm glad I stopped having to complete the full set but looking at the list I do wonder why I've only been to the Vaudeville once.
