We see what a lot of shows gross weekly and know what the Equity minimum is and sometimes we hear that a certain star has been offered however many thousand per week for a role. But generally I wondered who do the board think would be the highest paid person or role in the West End at the moment.
Names like Patti Lu Pone sprang to mind and the people playing leads in Phantom, Les Mis, Wicked etc must be on "good" money. Someone who is box office like say Tom Hiddleston could also command high wages as he'll put bums on seats.
This is a general question and I've tried to ask it in such a way it could be answered without saying exactly how much a certain performer might get.
Has Nathan Lane's 50K per week for The Producers ever been topped?
Jason Donovan's fee from 1991 rumoured to be 33K a week would be worth over 61K now.

I think Idina was the highest paid actress in the 2006 season for Wicked, with 30k £ per week plus accommodation.

I wouldn't be surprised if Katharine McPhee is getting paid a fair amount for Waitress. Probably explains why she is only there for three months!

Katherine did spring to mind but as she isn't that well known in the UK I decided not to mention her. As Ryan says she isn't exactly short of money as she will likely soon become the 5th Mrs David Foster.

I can imagine Bonnie and Brian are on pretty fair wages for 9 to 5. I'd also guess Shane Ritchie will be on a good amount for ETAJ.

I would assume Cuba Dowling Jr didn't come over here to Chicago cheaply; though he's more recent than current.

A big name actor who can fill a playhouse for a run could command big money and if the run is fairly limited then the wage outlay wouldn't be like a longer musicals contract.
Also I forgot to say in the initial posting that an easy way to hedge bets is for producers to offer a star a percentage if box office takings go over a certain amount of theatres are a certain percent full. If producers need say 75% capacity to break even they could offer a performer a percentage of everything over say 80% of takings. Some panto stars are paid a percentage of the takings and that way it can be a win-win.

Gillian Anderson for All About Eve currently?
But the stars of the Palladium panto will be a on a high salary - Julian, Dawn/Elaine - only for 5 weeks though, although they work hard for it with up to 12 shows a week!

How about Sally Field and Bill Pullman in the upcoming production of "All My Sons"? That one isn't going to be cheap!

I’m quite interested to know what your standard jobbing actor/ensemble member or musician on a tour is earning. I know it’s terribly nosey of me, but I often watch people on stage and think “I wonder how much he/she is getting for this”. I just think touring must be very gruelling and wonder what the compensation is like.

I think the American stars like Bryan Cranston and Nathan Lane were paid lower rates when they at the National but likely got other perks in lieu of it but most of the time, commercial theatre can pay more compared to their subsidised counterpart.

That's what I always wonder. If they're essentially paying two lots of rent they must be earning enough to make it worth it.

I'm pretty sure that accommodation or "Digs are paid for by the producers when shows are on tour.
Talking of salaries I bet the highest paid would have been for Bette Midler if she had come over to do Hello Dolly.

Currently watching Equus, and a thought struck me. Presumably, performers are paid a pretty penny for baring all, correct? If so, the lad playing Alan would, I assume, be earning a decent amount considering how much time he spends sans clothes

I just think touring must be very gruelling and wonder what the compensation is like. I know in America the actors can either take the housing provided by the production or they can take the money that was going to be used for their housing and find their own place. Some touring actors have said they usually take the money and use it for an Airbnb.

In a big touring house and a show that has sold very well, you look at the ensemble and think their wages for that is equivalent to two sold seats. This is when I start to dpfeel sorry for them.

Performer friends I’ve spoken with about this have said they’ve had an allowance for digs but it’s never/rarely enough to cover the cost of the digs. I’m sure there are situations where that’s not the case and it is just paid for regardless (for instance, I believe The War of the Worlds Arena Tour cast were put up in hotels) but it’s certainly not always the case, at least from what I’ve been told.

The touring and West End minimums and travel allowances are available to see online. The bigger the theatre, the more a performer gets paid.
