Lol! Harsh but fair, Dave25. Still, although this staged concert was definitely conceived as a cash cow to fill in between the two staged productions, the calibre of the cast assembled is quite high with the weakest link in the cast being Alfie and to a certain extent Michael, and it would be a real shame if this primary cast was documented forever instead of the much better alternates. Very short-sighted of Cammack to simply view this production as housewife fodder.

Is this actually on sale yet? Insta and Twitter official pages imply so, but when you click through there doesn't seem to be cinema booking available?

I think that Cammack seriously underestimates the brand that Les Mis is. This is not a project to gratify some neighing British housewives, but this is a document for theatre history. A filmed version is supposed to have a long life. It should still sell 5/10/20 years from now. This is supposed to be a worldwide document. It is also hugely disrespectful to have such a big gap in quality and to not care about it. JOJ's performance might be one of the greatest in theatre history and what do we get? A one trick pony, a volatile domestic showbizz hype, who doesn't give the material, the notes, the writing or the music ANY nuance/color/emotion that is so very much needed for this part, who sings the whole show on 1 volume, in my humble opinion he sounds like a frog with a chastity belt, who has ruined a concert recording of the same material already..... What will people think in 100 years from now? Let’s face it, Alfie Boe has (for a certain type of woman and man) a sex appeal that JOJ does not. It’s not really about the acting or the voice for those folks, it’s the sex factor. After seeing AB live now I don’t get the appeal personally, but each to their own eh.

I bet the people who booked for the "final" performance on the Saturday are fuming now!

Sex appeal!! I burst out laughing at that, not because you put "Alfie" and "sex appeal" in the same sentence, but because that gave me a sudden mental image of a sweat-soaked Confrontation, or a shirtless Bring Hime Home, in a "new and gritty" restaged version of Les Mis in 10 years' time... o god Cammack don't get any ideas.

Let*s hope that if there is a BluRay/DVD release of this there will be a few songs done by JOJ as bonus material, that would be great. Otherwise it is totally clear the Alfie Boe is on this, he is the first cast / star announced for this production.

Let’s face it, Alfie Boe has (for a certain type of woman and man) a sex appeal that JOJ does not. It’s not really about the acting or the voice for those folks, it’s the sex factor. I thought Alfie Boe is popular because he sounds operatic while singing songs that are easier for the general public to listen to than actual opera. Until now I genuinely had absolutely no idea that he was supposed to have any sex appeal. I saw him singing at ENO about a decade ago (before he slagged off opera for the second time!) in 2 roles where he was playing the young romantic lead & I didn't think he had sex appeal doing those. I mean, he was acceptably romantic but not sexy. I'm completely baffled that now, a decade older, he's supposed to be sexy.

It's a pity these women think with their ...... only. It's amazing how men are being treated as sex objects these days, and how it's socially accepted. Last week I saw a clip of a girl being arrested by a cop. Thousands of comments of women who wish they were in her shoes and grabbed by that cop. Not 1 comment from a man who wished he could grab that girl. And if there had been one, it would have been drama and hue and cry. Last summer, a friend of mine (actor) went to a ladies night movie premiere. He was taking pictures with housewives and they were squeezing him in the butt while taking pictures. He laughed it off (this is what society clearly expects of men nowadays) but afterwards he said: Isn't this weird? What if it had been the other way around and multiple men squeezed an actress' ass? This is to show the double standards and how women are ruining the arts. I am not easily offended and I always take care of situations myself in which others would probably make reports, call cops or dive into the victim role, but I just can't stand double standards in real life and even more so when it ruins the arts. Ps. I would choose JOJ over AB in all aspects.

I think it's the combinaion of both. An operatic voice in approachable songs and sex appeal to some people, like K Jenkins, except that she doesn't even have an operatic voice. Personally, I don't see any sex appeal in him but lots of ladies must do.
Usually, when you think of opera singers with sex appeal, names such as Kaufmann and Grigolo come to mind. But I bet most of his fan girls have never been to an opera, so they wouldn't know.
If you are even a little bit familiar with opera, you should know that AB's voice, while being perfectly good, isn't that special compared to many other opera singers'. He would never have made it to the Scala or MET. So, he made a very wise business decision turning to a concert singer.

I think it has more to do with the funny, amiable personality in interviews that appeals to housewives. That's often the case in the crossover world and mainstream area. In any case it's not about quality or suitability. I would have hoped that Cammack had more respect for his legacy and productions.

Women are ruining the arts? Seriously? Well, it's an interaction, but if you look at the bigger picture, people like that are ruining the arts yes. Which results in producers actually hiring the wrong people, which results in audiences only neighing when they see the guy from tv and never realizing the quality that could have been. It's an interaction. A downward spiral.

He would never have made it to the Scala or MET. So, he made a very wise business decision turning to a concert singer. The first time I heard Boe I didn't actually know I was hearing him. He was replacing the scheduled singer as the Italian Tenor in Rosenkavalier due to illness & I'd arrived late thanks to a severely delayed train & missed the cast change notice. I therefore heard him "blind" & without prejudice & thought his voice was decent but nothing special by operatic tenor standards. I can quite understand why he decided there was more money in the crossover concert option & went for that. Likewise I can understand why Wynne Evans, who I saw do several roles with WNO, decided Go Compare was more lucrative than opera. However Evans managed to change his career path without any unpleasantness, unlike Boe who decided to make unpleasant & in most opera fans' opionions uncalled for comments about opera. Twice. It's that which made me dislike Boe, not his change of career path. I think it has more to do with the funny, amiable personality in interviews that appeals to housewives. That's often the case in the crossover world and mainstream area. In any case it's not about quality or suitability. That certainly seems more plausible to me than sex appeal! It would also fit with the double-act with Ball. The latter may have had sex appeal back when he did the original Les Mis but could anyone still find him sexy after seeing him as Edna in Hairspray?!

Judging by the crowds of ladies at the stage door every night I would beg to differ...
If a woman performer was being talked about in this way, some would find it slightly unsavoury!
We realise JOJ is the best thing since sliced bread and Ball and Boe are the devil incarnate, we hear it often enough on this thread but, let's be honest, if it wasn't for them would we have seen this production resurface at all? I somewhat doubt it.

Boe’s pale torso holds no thrill for Ken.

I don't find JOJ particularly sexy, I don't know (or care)if he is nice to fans as I don't stage door. But I damn well respect him as a performer. He won my admiration with his god-given talent and professionalism alone. His voice is what I call one in a million. And he never received even a minute of vocal training!
Tonight, I sat at the very back of the gods with tears trickling down my cheeks from the beginning to the end even after 100+times. The show has the power to genuinely move the audience and it deserves lead actors who can respect the music and lyrics and have the skills to be truthful to them. JOJ, Earl Carpenter and Ramin are some of those special musical theatre actors IMHO.
While it's fair to say that the popularity of AB and MB made it possible to launch the semi-staged version, it could also be said that without JOJ providing the qualitative backbone to the show three perfs a week, it could have lost its initial bubble and tailed away.
It is a huge mistake not to film JOJ (in addiction to a AB's if you must). His voice and acting skills should be captured for the future generations. This musical deserves it. It is sad to think that greedy CM has lost the decency as an producer to respect a masterpiece like Les Miz.

I find talent sexy, so JOJ is sexy. As is Earl. Easy!
(Plus they're both also super nice, soft-spoken and so so modest at stage door. Wins all my respect and admiration.)

It is a huge mistake not to film JOJ (on top of AB if you must). Sounds like an entirely different kind of video... that nobody needs.

I am seeing two performances today. Last night, MB was having trouble with his voice, so I am hoping Earl will step in today. MB deserves some rest. As the mean factory girl and Matt were also experiencing some difficulty singing, there might be a virus going on among the cast. But I hope it's not the case.

Well he didn't get any! He was the guest on Saturday Kitchen this morning. It's not always broadcast live, but it was today, so after a late finish he had an early start.
