I was tickled the other day to read on Twitter some posts from a woman who’d gone to see Alfie but ended up seeing John. She was initially disappointed but later tweeted that JOJ is ‘up there with the best of them’.
Sigh.

I also chose the JOJ show because I'm not a big Alfie fan, from what I've heard of him singing Bring Him Home etc on TV in the past. Yesterday confirmed my decision as a good one!

JOJ was so genuinely JVJ. He meant every single note and word, and listening to his singing was like having melted gold poured into my ears. Having a JVJ of this standard must surely be having a positive impact on the entire cast, especially as they remain on stage and can hear him sing. Everyone would want to up their games. Well said, I'm glad that more people recognize the genius that is JOJ. He really masters the delicate artform of acting in song. He uses the whole palette from soft silk to strong platinum, and everything in between. It really is like a painting, very fine art. He knows that some notes work as actors themselves so he dares to let them flow. Therefore he never "over-emotes" (such as the complete travesty that was Hugh Jackman, over-emoting every syllable which makes it double up and just funny and tiresome and it separates the acting from the notes which makes it look and sound like a cheap broadway parody. He has no clue about which notes to cut short or which notes to hold longer or what impact the written notes already have, or how to combine actual notes with acting, that is acting in spite of song, constantly switching (even in 1 line at times) and forcing the audience to do the same, which is not how this material is written). With JOJ it always feels natural. Because his singing is natural. And therefore his acting through song becomes natural. That works best on both stage and screen. JOJ's performance is incredibly filmic, refined and real. I am baffled that he is not promoted as the lead in this production. The difference between him and Alfie Boe in mastering the craft is gigantic. Thank you , Dave25 for describing his art so beautifully. Your post brought tears to my eyes. I shall repeat re-read it. I am forever indignant that this genius is so unforgivablly underappreciated in the UK. Why don't people understand that commercial success and artistic excellence are two different things?

I've deliberately booked a JOJ show. If he is off and Alfie is on then in all likelihood I won't bother staying.

Just relieved that if she visits again she won’t be anywhere near me from my lofty perch in the upper circle slips ... and I prefer JOJ or Adam Bayou anyway 🤭 She wouldn’t be seen dead in the upper circle slips; she doesn’t even know that there’s an upstairs let alone two levels. She sits down, ( no further back than row D) and Ken gets the drinks in. There was a huge row and many tears when she found out there was no centre aisle at the front of the Gielgud - “he’ll never see me squashed up with all them others. My life is ruined, ruined I tell you! You’re a builder Ken. DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!!!” So my first of five trips tonight and I’m praying that Dawn and Ken from Chester aren’t in

I’m surprised nobody has mentioned the used Tena lady pad flung at JOJ for daring to step in. “My Ken didn’t pay £300 for us to watch YOU do it. We like it when Alfie booms and all the words run together, whilst staring dead eyed at an inappropriate area of the stage. We don’t need YOU acting through song and giving a credible vocal performance thank you. Get back to Casualty/Holby City/delete single episode acting job as appropriate”.

I originally booked a Boe matinee when I am up for Mary Poppins as I couldn’t justify an extra trip at the time to match up with a JOJ show. Then things changed and mine became a JOJ show, fab news. I am now doing a second show with my friend to see Boe. She’ll be devastated if he’s off, I’ll try and convince her she’s wrong. Still over a month to go though!

Am I right in presuming that Ken and the woman who threw a, hopefully dry, TENA pad, at JOJ are ficticious creatures representing a certain type of punters, namely those who don't have ears or tastes?

Well i enjoyed tonight’s performance from the leg breaking slip seats in upper circle and apart from a very distracting mobile phone in the 8th seat of the third row of the stalls who was clearly recording it (which I reported at the interval) there appeared to be no Ball-ets or CHF-ets in the audience - the greatest applause appeared to be for the Thenardiers - I admit I gave mr ball a standing ovation for his version of stars which reduced me to tears - in a good way. JOJ looks and sounds exhausted so time Mr Boe put a bit of effort in or they give the perfectly excellent understudies a chance

Trust me, there are not so few of us on other blogging platforms who are praying to the theatre gods that Boe/Ball "take a hike" and let JOJ/Earl take their place or at least go on for a night. I've seen the show twice and have 2 more lined up, 3 specifically booked for JOJ and the one Alfie show I attended I had no choice- it was a night when Earl was covering for Michael.. and I absolutely HAD to see Earl live. Worth it.

Worth it. I saw it on Monday with JOJ as JVJ - thought it was marvellous. Some great voices in the smaller roles. I didn’t recognise Earl as the priest because I was sitting at the back of the stalls, but thought he had an amazing voice. Made sense later when I saw the programme!

His Bamatabois is also unparalleled. Always find it impressive he manages to portray the most polar opposite of characters equally convincingly within a short space of time.

Earl Carpenter is a great great actor. He is one of the very best both as Javert and the Phantom.
He is also extremely funny. I wish he will bring back the Three Phantoms concert to the UK, but he is taking it to China next year. I am considering travelling there...
