This and Great British Portrait are great! Love the "take this tatty bit of fabric and make somethin glam" bit. I can just about thread a needle, but this show is glorious.

I love this programme. There was a totally brilliant person (I think in the first series or early on anyway) who designed the garments on the model and didn't make patterns. She was amazing and I think went on to develop her own business. I canāt make clothes, only just sew a button on. We had sewing lessons at school, the last of the great Victorians, me.....

I used to work near the delicious Patrick Grant and would see him fairly regularly going about his business and I can safely say that he is just as drop dead gorgeous in the flesh as he looks on TV. And he's tall too, very tall.
Oh, Joe Lycett is taking over hosting duties from Claudia.

Lovely programme, looks so simple yet I bet tricky to film. They had fans running all the time so must have been done in the hot hot summer we had. That winning jump suit was fabulous.

I hate sewing, I don't even sew buttons on if I can avoid it, but I really enjoy Sewing Bee for some reason. Thought Joe Lycett was great too. |

I loathe sewing. Loathe it. Mrs Sutton (Yes, YOU you old cow!) traumatised me forever! She used to hold up my work as an example of how NOT to do it. Oh the shame. I can still see the yellow flowery patterned box I made. Having slaved for weeks on the sides and the lining, imagine the horror on discovering I didn't have enough material left for the lid. So I used a different fabric, as near to the yellow as I could find. (Ok, so it might have been, um, sort of brown....) Oh how she mocked. For several weeks. Until the end of term. I was 10.
Nowadays if it cannot be fixed with glue it goes in the bin. Mini Tibs was 12 before she realised that ballet ribbons are not supposed to be pink with red splotches. (She quickly taught herself to sew really neatly, with teeny, blood-free stitches and is now on her way to becoming a surgeon - and all thanks to my uselessness as a ballet parent!)
But I digress. I have just discovered this programme and, weirdly, absolutely love it! I've even found series one on another channel and watched that. These people deserve the sewing equivalent of oscars. They are amazing. I cried when Alexei left. What an inspiring person. I love Juliet and Janet. That net curtain dress was awesome, as was Juliet's beautiful jumpsuit. And as for reversible anything...reversible? What? Where? How? I mean, where do you hide the mess? The tangle of thread? The blood where you've stabbed yourself? The biro marks? The safety pins you have to leave in or the whole thing would fall apart?
Awesome stuff. Joe Lycett makes me laugh and I love the two judges, particularly the way in which Esme deals with Joe.

Juliette for the win. Sheās lovely and has a bit more flair than the others. Jen will bounce back from last nights wobble I think.
No more kiddies casuals, thanks very much. The doggy outfit was fun though.
I like how this isnāt rrying to make the contestants into tv celebs, itās a genuine amateur competition which is why Bake Off was much better before it became a launch pad for wannabes.

I love the programme but I'm getting a little annoyed with the obvious editing - same with bake off. The editing flags up who is going to be eliminated pretty early on and definitely when they say "and the contestant we are losing is.....". It's sooo predictable. Once you notice what they do it's impossible to avoid it. I wont spell it out for those who haven't noticed. I'm not usually that observant.
Oh and the "how long do we have left?" followed immediately by a time check. Very repetitive.

I would never have watched this if it werenāt for this thread. Interesting fact! An old colleagueās sister won the first ever season. But I digress! Tibidabo made me laugh with her sewing skills. I tried to thread a needle the other week and my combination of eyesight and inability made me feel so old that I have vowed ānever againā! What I love about this show is my complete lack of context. I love Bake Off because I understand it. I had no idea that I could get pleasure out of something I donāt understand. I genuinely have no idea how long it takes to do any of the challenges. But the skill and creativity on show. My sense is that Juliette has her own aesthetic (like Kim Joy) and this makes her a very strong contestant. You can see her ability to bring her style to all of the challenges. Ricardo too, but to a lesser extent. I think this is Julietteās to lose. |
