Having done intensive research into the issue, I have discovered that arts education is being cut out of school curriculums, especially secondary education. This fact alarms me as arts education is vital for children in many ways. Arts education in primary school allows children to grow and develop whilst also developing creativity and artistic skills.
In secondary school, arts education and creativity enables the students to have a stable and flourishing mental health. A couple of hours of a more creative subject can help take away the stress of academic pressure and exams. Creative subjects can also enable students to do better in their academic skills such as maths and English.
Although the government has pledged to give more funding to the arts, the nationwide lack of funding means that many schools are cutting the arts subjects. This then creates a lack of creative arts teachers in the futures impacting our futures entire place in the creative arts. Without film producers, costume designers, set creators, we wouldn’t make great films, without artists, our many art galleries would have to close, without actors, famous theatre wouldn’t be touring around the country. Without these various forms of entertainment, people in the UK wouldn’t have anything to see, anywhere to go, things to watch, and the UK would create a society where we only worked and never enjoyed.
Additionally, the GCSE and A-level reforms of 2016 have added more academic skill to the creative subjects. Speaking from experience the GCSE and A-Level Drama qualifications both have long exams in which you write a long essay about how you would act a scene instead of demonstrating how you would act a scene. This seems like a pointless way to get students to write more essays. Although I understand that the government want to elevate the level of education in the UK, I don’t understand what they gain from making a creative subject less creative?
In conclusion, education needs to include creative subjects else we will create a society where we only work and never be creative or artistic. We will also be allowing growing children to not develop imagination or creativity, meaning the future generations will be without any flourishing skills.
We need to stop cutting out arts education before we lose the creativity of the next generations forever.
We need future creatives.
