Peggy For You at the Hampstead is also a good shout for an alternative.

Cancelled Wednesday as well, I’ll see if there is anything else on in the West End that night but I think everywhere is shutting up shop. Tina The Musical should be on. Just had a reminder from the Aldwych about my Wednesday evening booking. It was a very good price through Today Tix and the offer is still available.

Thanks for the advice folks, I’ll see what I feel like on Wednesday. Probably a good idea to wait until Wednesday, by then you'll know which shows will be open. I think a few more will be closing down before then and they'll be lots of tickets for most everything as people are returning them too.

Firstly, I was disappointed with the lack of announcements regarding the reopening of MR! as we had tickets for yesterday’s performance (the closure was up to and including 30/12/21 so we naturally expected some confirmation, as was the case when Cabaret reopened. Nevertheless, after watching the Instagram stories of some cast members it was clear that we had once again struck lucky.
From the moment you step into the auditorium your breath is taken away with the atmosphere and the gorgeous decor. Expectations were high, I love the film. Personally I found the first twenty minutes at least to be purely padding, megamix after megamix with very little story. Considering the rights issue with the film’s songs, there are some great choices that fit the piece really well (Crazy/Rolling in the Deep) but on the whole the rest are jarring. It’s one party anthem after another, and there has been very little attempt at fleshing out the story. Saying that, the visuals are incredible, and you can see where every penny has been spent. I’ll probably go again in the future, as given some time I’ll reflect more positively on it.
The most difficult thing I’ve found is many of my friends were due to go in the last month but all were left devastated by the closure… when they’ve asked me what I thought, it’s hard to answer.

I was so excited to see this, but caught it on the Royal Variety and hated it - it's a jukebox musical!?

I have seen the film, I'm a big fan. I think it fits more seamlessly into the film, I didn't like the number performed on the show.
This is a warm welcome to this forum!

Welcome Ladidah. The forum is a bit heated at the moment, lots of opinions stated as fact, circular conversations and a general lack of respect for each other. Hopefully normal functioning should resume soon.

I’m a lot less interested than I was before it opened. What with 2nd rate leads and dodgy covers that weren’t even in the film…

I think that is where some of the issues lie. Many people know the film well, so when the medleys suddenly have a different song in them to what was in the film, it's jarring. Katy Perry must be doing pretty well from the various songs she has in Moulin Rouge and & Juliet.

Yes, I think that's what I mean - it's feels way more jukebox-y than the film ever did.

Yes, I think that's what I mean - it's feels way more jukebox-y than the film ever did. I think if people go expecting the show to be exactly like the film, they will certainly be disappointed. But I totally understand why they have added in much newer songs to make it feel more modern and relevant- just like they did with the movie when that came out. I’d argue there are too many songs in it. It gets a bit exhausting.

Personally, by far my favorite number in the show (together with Roxanne, which is in the movie) is Crazy Rolling, which isn't in the movie. But then I like the stage show more than the movie anyway as I really have never been into it much. Have seen the movie when it came out, been to the secret cinema version of it and seen the stage version and for me the stage version definitely trumps both my other experience of Moulin Rouge. But that said, the Broadway version is way stronger than what I saw in previews in the West End. If I win lotto tickets (whenever they actually introduce them) I will give town another go, otherwise I'll hopefully see it in New York again late Feb/early March.

Went to yesterdays SAT matinee and my friends and I loved it
Sat in row B of the stalls and the house looked very full
I would definitely avoid front row of “can can” seats, so much of the show is on the extend, the front row we’re constantly having to turn around to see what was going on
The auditorium and set design is sublime
As I said, we loved it

I’ve wanted to see a Moulin Rouge musical for mabye ten years? I saw it last week and was disappointed! It felt like the heart had been taken out of it and ridiculous songs shoehorned in where the originals would have been much better.. people buying tickets surely like the movie so I’m not sure why the musical had to be so different, even simple things like how they addressed Satines illness felt off. 2/5 stars

The thing is that I’m semi interested, but it is an awful lot of money to risk on something which every performance you’ve seen so far (however out of context) has said ‘no, not good enough’. I’m happy to wait. Conversely, I get that the surroundings, design and being there might be what it takes to work.

Just to counter some of the recent negativity in this thread - I went to this last night as a group of 4, and all of us are HUGE fans of the film. We all LOVED LOVED LOVED it!
Everything was just so much fun! One of the best nights I've had at the theatre in ages. All of our favourite songs translated perfectly onto stage, and the new additions worked so well. Backstage Romance was definitely a highlight - I'd pay to just see that one number again!
The sets, costumes and choreography were stunning.
I went in with high expectations and they were all completely exceeded.
I can't wait to go back again!
