Interesting they flew the US lead out and not his understudy...

Sad to say the covers are not very good. I understand the situation completely, but act 1 just fell completely flat. No energy, just dull and boring.

This show is just not good. I have not seen Moulin Rouge the film before (I know...) so I went in blind.
Was there really a need for this to be a jukebox musical? The reason I usually hate jukebox musicals is that the plot essentially has to pause during songs - the writer cannot introduce anything of their own for the story as the song has already been written. In regular musicals, the songs ARE the story. In jukebox they are not.
In this show I essentially get bored during every song. We all already know the songs. We know the words. There is nothing interesting here.
Perhaps this could have been rescued with a good book. For all it's faults, I actually enjoyed & Juliet as the book was decent. However the book for MR is just dire. Almost every line is some kind of cliche platitude. Drink every time someone says "Satine" in an emotional voice. It's painful.
The set, costume and lighting are gorgeous. But...why? Why such an effort for a run of the mill jukebox musical?
I think this show could have been something if they actually wrote some fantastic songs. Perhaps like how Sister Act went from a jukebox movie to an Alan Menken musical.
To top it off, the cast are just.... Boring? To be fair, all 4 leads are off for COVID. But the energy was just horrific. Wooden, dull, [insert synonym here].
I did not expect to be bored by this at all, but I was.

As much as I prefer an original score, the mashed up existing songs is what Moulin Rouge is about. They may be different songs to the movie, but it’s the same feel.
Never seen a more mobile audience! Up and down like yo-yos!
I don’t get the deal with Jamie Bogyo. He really didn’t sound great last night. Are they deliberately having someone like Ewan McGregor who isn’t the best singer?!
Felt very much like being back in the 80’s (in a very good way), when musicals were spectacular and no expense was spared. Definitely an “experience” I’d recommend, even if it’s not the greatest “musical” out there.

Availability seems to be decidedly available again all of a sudden? Tickets at all price points tonight.

Availability seems to be decidedly available again all of a sudden? Tickets at all price points tonight. The West End is once again being hit by mass cancellations due to hesitancy from audience members. And once again, there is no clear guidance or support from the government... don't go to work, but do have a Christmas party. Don't gather in big groups, but we won't be closing pubs or theatres [leaving them unable to close themselves because they'd be ineligble for insurance]. It's a repeat of the start of the pandemic, like they have learned nothing. Sorry for the rant.

It's a repeat of the start of the pandemic, like they have learned nothing. Sorry for the rant. I’ve been thinking exactly the same today. It’s like we’re back to March 16th 2020. So incredibly frustrating, scary and anxiety-inducing and I fear that the theatres, pubs and restaurants who lose out on takings now won’t recover. It feels as though the government know the country now won’t be ‘told’ what we can’t do (given the parties fiasco and the countless other rule breaches they’ve committed), so now they’re scaring us into a state of self-imposed lockdown. Genuinely worried for what the next few weeks and months will bring 😢

I think people are cancelling their tickets. some show show really good availability which you wouldn't expect this close to christmas. That is a separate issue from show's cancelling performances.

There is nothing interesting here. I essentially agree with the point, but I think Moulin Rouge (the film) and Mamma Mia (the play) may be exceptions, as their creators used the pop songs to tease and play with the audience. It was a bit of a banter; famous songs cleverly inserted in their story in a surprising and humorous way. Maybe in the transposition to the theatre, that is now gone from MR. I felt the funny premise was gone from the Mamma Mia film, even though there was still plenty of humour left (and I still managed to enjoy it).

The West End is once again being hit by mass cancellations due to hesitancy from audience members. Is it? Which shows have cancelled due to hesitancy from audience members? I mean cancellations by ticket holders, not the shows themselves. People are nervous to travel and sit in a packed theatre so are cancelling or exchanging their tickets, hence the sudden high level of availability at many of the shows still open. Frozen for example should be packed pre Xmas, in fact there are still tickets left at all price ranges.

And Moulin Rouge was heaving last night.

At what is usually the West End's busiest and most lucrative time. To many shows, it's disastrous.

Very worrying. The whole of December was sold out the other day- now loads of tickets have appeared scattered all over the place.

Very worrying. The whole of December was sold out the other day- now loads of tickets have appeared scattered all over the place. Not at all, as the performances were never sold out. After the cancellations earlier this month, ATG blocked off all performances until 8th January and gave exclusive access to people who had their performances cancelled. I'm assuming most of them have since rebooked, so ATG has simply reopened booking to the general public.

That's awful. This is not only financially unsustainable, but the mental toll can't be good for everyone involved.

Cancelled Wednesday as well, I’ll see if there is anything else on in the West End that night but I think everywhere is shutting up shop.

Cancelled Wednesday as well, I’ll see if there is anything else on in the West End that night but I think everywhere is shutting up shop. I recommend Pride and Prejudice* (*sort of)! They haven't cancelled once and (touch wood) seem to be doing okay. They're also inviting all performers, tech crew, FOH and other staff from cancelled productions to go and see their show for free, which is a lovely thing to do. And they're just round the corner from Moulin Rouge, so no changes to travel plans needed :') I was up in the air about whether to see MR, as I'm trying desperately to remain virus-free so I can make it home for Christmas. I guess the silver lining for me is that I have the choice taken away from me and can hopefully move my ticket to the new year. I hope you can do the same!
