25 minute show stop at the introduction to the Elephant Love Medley scene before it successfully continued. It's going to be a long night!!
Also understudies on for every lead role apart from The Duke.

Great job by the ensemble and the technical teams. That's where my positives end unfortunately. Can't win them all!

I loved seeing MR a few months ago however for me the icing on the cake would be to go back and see Zoe Birkett as Satine
I remember her from series one of Pop Idol and Big Band night when she sang Get Happy, it was awesome
If I can dream of a superstar Satine, Nicole Scherzinger would have blown the roof off The Piccadilly. I'd have gone full on "Cabaret dynamic pricing" to see her

I saw Moulin Rouge on Saturday evening. I’ve got a few thoughts and a question!
- Very spectacular scenery and costumes and technically really impressive.
- It was VERY ‘hen do’. Lots of low level chatter in the audience and lots of laughing at not-meant-to-be-funny bits. I could have done without the audience singing along to Adele too. A very different (and worse!) audience to what I’ve been with previously at any other musical.
- Lots and lots of popular songs crammed in to the score, felt a bit forced at points and definitely detracted from any kind of emotional moment on stage.
- I was surprised to see that the actor I had for Christian was the principle. I might be missing something, but he felt particularly weak to me. Not his fault of course, but an odd casting decision in my opinion.
A question:
- At the end I looked for signs of an orchestra pit but couldn’t see one. I assume it’s been covered over for the extra seats at the front. Clearly there is a live orchestra (a man with a baton came out for applause at the end), but I assume they’re sat in a covered up pit or something. A bit weird not to be able see them at all, but perhaps that’s more common than I expect. Do many shows do this now?

I think the only other West End musical currently running in which you don't see the orchestra is Cinderella. In Dear Evan Hansen the orchestra is not in the pit but on a sort of barely visible balcony on stage left; pretty much the same happens in Cabaret. At the NT Olivier the orchestra is usually at the back of the stage, since they have no pit. |

They also have the best musician curtain call where they come front of stage and each get to do a little solo. Having off stage muscians is quite common these days. Matilda, Heathers, Back to the Future, Cinderella &Juliet to name a few. There are a few shows where the band is off stage or hidden but make an appearance at times such as Drifters Girls where they are at the back of the stage and are revealed in the finale or Get Up Stand Up where some of the musicians come on for some numbers. I was taught to play by a west end musician and they aren't that bothered about pit vs off-stage, apart from the conductor they can't see any of the show from the the pit anyway. Some like being on stage and others prefer not being seen so they can check their phone or drink or eat when not playing. |

Saw this last night and Craig Ryder was on as Zidler, initially disappointed when I saw it on the board but he was excellent.
I’m a big fan of the film, and I really enjoyed the show. Yes it had its faults, but for the most part I was sat with either an ear-to-ear grin or holding back the tears.
The way they’ve set up the theatre is lovely, even this cheapskate in the Grand Circle saw everywhere draped with red velvet and strings of lightbulbs, swathed otherwise in deep red light. The lighting, sets and costumes are excellent - with all those lights they’ll be hit hard with the rise in energy prices!
I give it 4 stars (because I can-can-can!), a real spectacle of a show.
