Really End of Rainbow coming in? Not saying it wont happen, I just be surprised. When it played the West End originally it only played the small Trafalgar Studio and that was with the mighty Tracie Bennett. Could Ma Rainey Black Bottoms also come in from the National? I would guess that good theatre management should have another show in the "wings", in case of an eventuality, such as this, or a show forced to close early. Could see Ma Rainey coming in for like a 2 month limited season at somewhere like the Noel Coward. |

As someone who remembers the heydays of RATM, the thought occurs to me that with several theatres in the West End becoming free this might be a good opportunity to put on a production of Slut Bitches From Pluto in one of them, or possibly all of them.

Whatever happened to the stage version of the film Pride that was planned? Or the Disney/NT musical of Pinocchio? Pride will be at the Old Vic in a future season (Warchus directed). Disney/NT's Pinocchio must still be in development or abandoned as the NT announced Bristol Old Vic's Peter Pan for this Christmas (which is when Baz Bamigboye said it will be if the workshop went well, which I'm assuming it didn't) |

Even though Showboat never really left shore and I being a regular theatre fan, like to see artistic change, I also have to recognise that investors stumped up cash and more than likely lost their total investment, this can discourage future investors, which in turn can be detrimental to the West End, not just potential shows coming in (such as King and I, the producers may get serious cold feet over this), but also the level of investment put into planned shows, the temptation could be to cut budgets, this gets reflected in the creative process, sets, lighting etc.
So I recognise this could be a negative situation for theatre.

On the topic of Grey Gardens earlier in the forum, Jinkx Monsoon (from RuPaul's Drag Race) confirmed on Jonathan Ross' Radio 2 show last week that she is bringing her production of Grey Gardens to London for a limited run later in the year. She did mention the theatre and it was a fringe one (not the Soho which she's been performing in for the last month) but I can't remember which.
Would they risk 2 productions of Grey Gardens at the same time in London though?

The Wyndham's has No Man's Land in September which I think an extension for People, Places and Things is more likely. Given Impossible is only doing a month and a bit at the Noel Coward, I imagine the next show is already lined up.
TBH Showboat cutting its run isn't the West End in crisis, if a show isn't selling then there isn't much that can be done and Lady Day is because the star has pulled out leaving a gap in the schedule of the Wyndham's.

Is Disney's/National's Pinocchio the next Monte Cristo, There hasn't been any news to confirm it has been postponed or cancelled, but it obviously has. In fact, the only news there has been about it so far was Baz Bamigboye's article from last July where he said; "I can reveal that if a workshop later this year is successful, Pinocchio will be given the green light and premiere at the National in time for Christmas 2016." Unless there will be a surprise announcement soon that Pinocchio will play in rep with either Hedda Gabbler in the Lyttleton or Peter Pan in the Olivier (which is unlikely as it is already the family Christmas show) then I assume that the workshop wasn't successful and that it needs more time, or even the project would be scrapped. Despite the controversy of Disney getting involved, I hope it does go ahead! Even if it isn't for Christmas, I think if the National stay faithful to the original Collodi story (and use the familiar tunes from Disney) then hopefully it will be a great show! |

Agreed, that's going to be some tight profit margins. Even if they scale back sets etc it has a large child cast and that alone will be expensive

Agree on the tight profit margins.
But Andrew Lloyd Webber owns the theatre and I reckon he will want SOR to run for several years.
The non proscenium stage will suit the style of the show.
Think this will happen and, due to the early 'Showboat' close, it could open before the previously announced mid 2017

The New London seats 1040
The Cambridge seats 1241
Not that great a difference, plus the fact that the new London is two levels rather than 3 means they can potentially charge more for a larger percentage of tickets.

Think the New London's capacity can be up to 1200 but it does depend on the configuration of the theatre.
