So,we've had the shows of the year, what are/were your films of the year? What with me only seeing one more film at the cinema this year, and that being Holmes and Watson tonight (I know, what was I thinking? ) - here is my top five: 1) Phantom Thread 2) A Star Is Born 3) The Sisters Brothers 4) Isle of Dogs 5) Mandy with honourable mentions to Black KKKlansman, Mission:Impossible - Fallout and Climax (it would have been a top 10 but while I've seen somewhere in the region of 20 films at cinemas this year, a large amount of those have been rescreenings of older stuff) So, over to you - what are/were your favourites?

Oooh yay - film people on the board too!! It’s my second love after theatre, and have been 65 times this year...
So my top five this year are:
5. Isle of Dogs - I knew I loved Wes Anderson, and this film cemented it. Completely brilliant animation, with an incredible cast, and a genuinely touching story.
4. Mamma Mia 2 - no shame that this was the most hilarious two hours I had in this cinema. You can’t beat ABBA, and you can’t beat cher!
3. A Star is Born - two stunning performances from Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper (and a wonderful directing debut from Cooper). Gaga really can do everything and it’s really joyous to see.
2. Bad Times at the El Royale - every shot of this was perfect. It was one of those films that used the whole 144 mins and didn’t drag at all. So intense, brilliantly acted, and I’d join a cult run by Chris Hemsworth.
1. Mary Poppins Returns - I don’t care what people think 😂 I adored every single second of it. It took me back to being a kid and is exactly what the world needs right now.

I haven't finished seeing films this year yet as I have 2 more booked for Saturday and there's still time after that. However, of the 76 I've seen so far, Three Billboards (as Marwood may recall from the meet-up) is probably my best. I was surprised to see that it didn't feature in many polls: for instance, the Picture House staff top ten - though their members rated it highly in their own top ten. Not sure about the next 4 but will give it some thought...

Haven’t seen nearly as many films this year as I normally do, I guess i’ve just been busier than before, but these are my favourites out of those I saw:
5) Avengers: Infinity War - Managed to live up to the huge hype & still deliver shocks. 4) Love, Simon - It was amazing to get a happy, silly rom-com with a gay lead on the big screen. It was sweet and made me a bit emotional lol! 3) Hereditary - A new horror classic imo. I love when horror films go beyond boring jump scares and deliver a creepy plot that scares you on multiple levels. Psychological horror at its best. 2) A Star Is Born - Incredible performances, incredible storytelling & incredible music; not much else I can say, hope it wins big at the Oscars. 1) Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse - I’m not a big animated film fan but this was unlike anything i’ve ever seen. Perfect both as a comic book movie & as just a movie in general; an emotional depth that you don’t often get in superhero films.

Good idea for a topic, I can never choose just one! My top 5 would have to be Avengers Infinity War, Bohemian Rhapsody, Mamma Mia - Here We Go Again, The Greatest Showman and A Star is Born.

I've seen a lot of films this year so was difficult to narrow them to a top 5 but they are
1. Black Panther 2. Crazy Rich Asians 3. A Star is Born 4. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri 5. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse
Honourable mention go to Bohemian Rhapsody, Incredibles 2, Mamma Mia 2 and Avengers Infinity War plus guilty pleasure of year has to go to The Meg

Oh if I can chuck in a couple of honourable mentions, they’d go to The Shape Of Water, Three Billboards, and The Favourite.

Holmes and Watson wasn’t that bad actually- probably helped by the alcohol I imbibed before seeing it but not as bad as the reviews I’d seen (which admittedly were all non-professional reviews) but I’ve certainly seen worse this year, Dragged Across Concrete and The Man Who Killed Don Quixote being the chief culprits. Anyway - favourite films in here, not OK films or cinema dregs please : as you were...

Now I've given this thread further thought, I'm struggling even more: firstly, I don't normally do "best of/worst of" lists and couldn't narrow either down to a mere 5 (10 perhaps) for films, plays or shows. But also, Top 5 in which sense? Most remarkable? Most entertaining? I could list films in both categories - and there are potentially others - but they wouldn't be the same. I recognise some of the films I see as great achievements/worthy of being seen/ground-breaking, etc - but sometimes I just want to switch off and enjoy a couple of hours of escapism, which film and theatre can also deliver.

I haven't seen many - cinema prices round here are surprisingly high - but I really enjoyed 'Three Billboards' and thought the British film 'Beast' was a very interesting/promising feature debut.

I only saw 2 films in 2018 both within the last month. Widows because Cynthia Erivo was in it which I found to be very slow and too violent and Nativity Rocks as Simon Lipkin was in it.
Got 2 lined up next week which I know I will like. Mary Poppins and The Favourite and that will probably be it for 2019.
Very unexciting I know.

I can't remember what I have seen! I know I've been either once or twice, but I have no idea what I saw. Not seen anything mentioned on this thread! I really am rubbish at keeping up with films.

Biggest turkey to 2017's The Greatest Showman - I saw it in early 2018 but the trauma stayed with me for the rest of the year!

There's not nearly enough mentions of 'Teen Titans Go! To the Movies' in this thread
I am not kidding - it was one of the most unexpectedly great films I saw last year. It definitely had the best last line....
Also Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
Avengers: Infinity War is only half a really long film and I won't be able to tell if it's actually any good until I see Endgame. Bohemian Rhapsody is actively terrible as a film, and coasts along on Queen's awesome back catalogue and people's genuine affection for Freddie.
