1. Bat Out Of Hell (surprising absolutely nobody!)
2. Kiss Of The Spiderwoman
3. The Rink
4. Heathers
5. The King And I
Special mention goes to a production that I suspect not many of theatreboard have seen - Jason Donovan and His Amazing Midlife Crisis Tour, which played in small theatres across the UK this year and was full of theatre anecdotes and costumes from his career so far. But don’t worry folks, I saw it enough times to make up for the fact that many of you did not 🙂

4 - Sondheim on Sondheim.
3 - Manon, the Royal Opera House - the cast with Nuñez/Bolle. Incredible.
2 - Hadestown
1 - Swan Lake, the new Royal Ballet production - Nuñez/Muntagirov cast.

Company and Swan Lake are, without a doubt, top two though, two of the best shows I've ever seen.

I haven't seen a lot of NEW shows in 2018, so I'll just do a Top 3:
1. Company (Gielgud Theatre, London).
2. The Inheritance (N. Coward Theatre, London)
3. West Side Story (Teatro Calderón, Madrid)
I've seen Hamilton too and that would be number 1, but it doesn't count as my first time was in 2017.

To be honest, any of the top three could have been my number one depending on what criteria I am using. Far and away my favourite shows this year. Tina has snuck on there more because I haven't been to the theatre nearly as much as I would have liked in the last 12 months.

4. The Grinning Man (Trafalgar Studios)
3. Queen Margret (Royal Exchange, Manchester)
2. Sunset Boulevard (UK Tour)
1. Company (Gielgud)
The Maids for its absolute finesse of technical integration with a very abstract piece. Very different from what I usually see but delivered with confidence and prowess.
The Grinning Man for its unique style - musically and visually. Wonderfully uplifting, hilarious and heartbreaking. So good to see this show gain a lot of momentum along its run.
Queen Margret; Very few can effectively condense 4 full Shakespeare texts down into one sub 3-hour piece and have it continue to make sense. Impressive for that alone, but it's delivery also was a highlight.
Sunset Boulevard almost for its orchestra alone. Almost lost count of how many times I saw this along the way. So good to hear such a full orchestration and see a high production standard on the road. Didn't get the audience figures it deserved.
And Company? Need I really clarify. Faultless in every way.
