Thank you all for your reports and discussions, it was on spot as most of the times :-) I loved the music (goosebumps moment and memories flooding back, but could have done without the extremely excited family next to me who were singin along and swaying and clapping - a bit is alsways welcomed but not non stop) and the stage design is nice. I absolutely did not like Sheridan Smith being "funny" and doing multiple roles (nothing personal, she is doing her job) and the kids playing adult roles. And yes Jason did do stage door which was fun as I got my programm signed (28 years later ;-))

I loved it! I had a great time! For me , Sheridan Smith was the star, I thought she was brilliant. I loved her energy, I thought she was warm and funny, I loved all the little quips ‘it’s still me guys!’ And I thought the whole thing was fab. Jac was brilliant, Jason camping it up was amazing. The costumes and set were brill (designed by someone I went to school with!) and I had a brilliant time! I even got my Jospeh cd cover signed by Jason after before he rode his bike off! There was some grumblings from ppl at SD cos Sheridan didn’t come out and Jason won’t do selfies as he hasn’t got time, and that annoyed me a little. Actors are human beings and don’t owe any of us anything once the curtain has come down.

Does anyone know the stage door address for the Palladium? What do you mean exactly ? Its located just around the corner next to the spaghetti house and opposite Libertys (Great Marlborough Street). Post adress is probably the one of the theatre (8 Argyll Street, Soho, London W1F 7TF).

I can't see this transferring to Broadway. 1 - they've already announced an anniversary concert for it in NY in February 2020 (https://www.theatermania.com/shows/new-york-city-theater/joseph-and-the-amazing-technicolor-dreamcoat_329839) 2 - ALW is going to be obsessing about his Cinderella opening here in the Spring - not sure he'd want to have another one of his productions opening (his first musical theatre score) to even be open to unfair critiques/comparisons. We've heard this before. Supposedly The Woman in White revival was returning to NY as well.

He has Phantom and School of Rock at the moment, so Joseph and Cinderella would take it to four shows. I believe he's the only composer to achieve this, last time in 2017. Plus, with the upcoming spree of closures, Joseph is well known and safe, especially for a limited run. Very different from The Woman in White.

Do the Americans like Joseph? I dont know why but I always think of it as being a very British type of musical that only the Brits would get. Probably totally wrong.

Certainly at the Palladium I am amazed by how non diverse the audience is - seems to be almost entirely Brits which in the West End is very unusual.

I wonder if Joseph on Broadway was a placeholder for Sunset Boulevard hence why it only ran for six months, Joseph's grosses on Broadway were respectable for 1994: www.broadwayworld.com/grosses/JOSEPH-AND-THE-AMAZING-TECHNICOLOR-DREAMCOAT That production was the Los Angeles Cast with Michael Damian - who was a U.S. Soap Opera star. I believe he had a 6 month contract and Donny Osmond was starring in the Canadian Production. And yes, the Minskoff Theatre was promised for Sunset back in March of 1994 when they finally pulled the trigger and said Glen was coming to Broadway and not Patti. I'm hazy in recalling (and lazy in googling -) but I believe Edgar Dobie (sp?) was a spokesperson for RUG and made a point of explaining that no, Joseph was not a "flop" on Broadway. And they did have extensive renovations to the theatre for Sunset. Remember, they expected Sunset to be another Phantom that would be running for years and years, so the theatre owners wanted to seriously upgrade the place from it's 70's vibe (I'm remembering the seats being plastic, fold down and there was one massive seating section for the lower and mezzanine sections - not the customary 3 sections with 5 aisles) All of the seating was replaced throughout the theatre, there was a lot of work done on the stage itself. Had Sunset not come to that theatre, they might have tried re-casting Joseph especially with the Summer coming and tourists in the city, kids out of school, etc. While it's definitely more popular in the UK - it does get a lot of play in schools out here. I'd assume it would do good business with some good casting. Whoever pointed out that it might be a safe bet for an empty house is probably correct. I'm just not sure that this same production would fly. The shtick that people have described about Sheridan I can't imagine being well received (even if the NY Times did like it... reading his review, I really wondered if it was jet lag. He's not a huge ALW fan) But then again, what do I know? School of Rock was a Broadway hit and I never went to see it -primarily because of the whole "come see kids playing on broadway" campaign. At over $100 a ticket, no thanks.

I do not think this really would fly long term. Not because its Joseph they have plenty of tours, I just think that the Sheridan type humor would not fly on Broadway. Not to mention Broadway does not have a Sheridan type leading lady (thank goodness).
Maybe bring it back to the Palladium next year for the panto.

If I remember correctly, you were adamant the Palladium run was going to flop, and would have to heavily discount to shift tickets. Fair enough, this version is not for you (have you actually seen it?), but like it or not, lots of people are enjoying it. And enjoying Sheridan in it.

I'll be seeing it tonight, never seeing another production and only being shown the filmed version earlier on in the year! So I'm really eager to see what they've done with the show, and I'm really looking forward to seeing Sheridan on stage (Managed to miss her in Funny Girl and didn't see Legally Blonde). I'll reserve my judgements about it going to Broadway until I've seen it so I can give an informed opinion on it We are up in the Grand Circle, will we miss much being up that high and slightly to the side?

We are up in the Grand Circle, will we miss much being up that high and slightly to the side? Height, not at all. The Palladium is incredibly intimate. I've seen stand-up comedy from row D up there and still felt very close. As the stage is wider and further back than usual, you won't miss anything at the sides either. Thats great to hear, thanks TheatreMonkey! The last thing I saw at the Palladium was Wizard of Oz, and though we were high up, we were pretty central, so had no complaints, but that was a LONG time ago haha!

As far as the reception goes you are right I thought it would flop. I am thoroughly surprised by its popularity. No I have no intention of seeing it.

As Joseph is coming to the end of its run I think it is safe to say that this production has been a huge success. I know many people didn't like the production or the star but there is no avoiding the fact that this, along with the recent pantos, has got to be one of the biggest box office successes for the Palladium in recent years. There has been no discounting apart from the weekly lottery (less said about that the better) and its a big old theatre to fill. So well done Joseph I say!

Wow so this is now completely sold out for its last two weeks besides 1-2 tickets at the occasional performance for £150! I’m suddenly very happy with my central row s stalls seat at £45 for the last Wednesday!

The whole run has been at 100% capacity - which is insane for a theatre that holds that many people - GOGOGOJO!

I actually ventured to London yesterday to see Joseph with a friend (I was the responsible adult!!). Not my number one choice of show, but having sat through it so many times, there are so many innovations in this production to make it enjoyable. Of course "Joseph" is bomb proof and any criticism is pointless with an engaging Joseph, the unstoppable Sheridan Smith and the heart throb that is Jason Donavan (kudos to him for meeting his fans at the stage door). It's got colour and energy and will be the benchmark for future productions. If I do have a criticism I can get away with, it is the sound design which sounds like it was done by Helen Keller.

My reservations about this production remain (though I have loved it enough to see it 8 times in total lol) but there is no doubt it has been an absolutely massive success - probably the most commercially successful new show this year. Interested to see which rumours about it's return will be true (return to Palladium after the panto, return next Summer or open ended in another theatre). Re casting, assuming 100% MT is sadly not an option, I am hoping for pop star Joseph and MT knock-the-vocals-out-of-the-park Narrator. And anyone but our Jase as Pharaoh lol.
