It will do well with Kids Week bookings though.

I had to watch the performance after reading the responses here. Sorry to sound cruel but the whole thing was horrific. It looked like a scene from Balamory. I know the cast are in the early stages but it was all so uncomfortable to watch. The styling was just dreadful too- Jason looked ludicrous. I loved Sheridan in Funny Girl but she seemed miscast in the clip. Anyways, I expect lots of young families will book after seeing that but it certainly didn’t look like it was aimed at anyone who’s hit puberty. 😆

I guess ALW went to Be More Chill and decided that was how to be down with the kids.
As ever on the board, there seems to be a schism between the "fans" who are willing to lap up anything and be unswervingly upbeat, contrasting with the miserable old devils who are/ have been in the industry.
If you have trained literally anywhere, you must surely be able to see that choreography is BASIC and those vocals- mimed as they were (and mixed very strangely)- were not excellent.
And it's all very well saying there are more weeks of rehearsal but a) they have the rest of the show to block and polish b) 4 weeks won't help if the concept and casting are off-track.
I suspect Dear Evan Hansen will make this look very... "end of the pier".

I really don't get the love for JD. In the few occasions I've seen him he's ranged from downright appalling (Rocky Horror, where the audience were actually prompting him his lines, rather than reacting to them) to merely mediocre (Priscilla) and that performance last night did nothing to change my opinion. Jason is a "name" who had a huge profile as an actor and then pop singer. He did the Jungle, Strictly etc and was top 3 in each I think. He's always been in the public eye somewhat and has done numerous theatre shows, musicals etc so has maintained his profile.

I saw JD in the original Joseph and he wasn't good in that either. Compared to the rest of the cast, he wandered about looking amateurish and lost. And his voice sounds absolutely shot to pieces in that clip.
Are they actually using kids for some of the brothers then? That's such a terrible idea. Maybe for Benjamin yes but Joseph is supposed to be the second youngest so the rest of them are all meant to be older than him. Having thirteen year old kids plotting to kill their brother is going to feel very weird...

I'm old enough to remember his first appearance on Neighbours!

I just watched it again to check that I wasn’t being unfair. Donovan is actually fine. Just needs to strengthen his vocal and give it a spot more energy. Jac Yarrow is cursed with some terrible espadrille/half trainer type shoes but is certainly a bright appealing talent, who can sing and move. HE will make it a hit.
Quite why SS is singing it in an American accent, whilst still doing all of her gurning and winking etc is beyond me. It is, for want of a better word, awful. She can’t just do Fanny Brice in ‘Rat Tat Tat Tat’ plays the narrator; well she can if the creatives let her, but they may as well just let my nana do it for a lot less money. Somebody needs to step in now and nip it in the bud. This sort of insincere schtick will kill it stone dead whether you’re a child, grown up or whatever.

Do you remember when Simon used to use musical theatre as a negative term? A son and a flop musical later and he will put any old crap in the live shows. No offense (to someone)

I really didn’t like the giggling/cackling or whatever you want to call it as she walked on. Yep, she seems incapable of staying in character these days. It’s just Sheridan pissing about. It had started by the end of her run in Legally Blonde.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if she had been directed to play "herself" and narrate the story that way.

Surely the one thing you want from a Joseph narrator is that the actress/actor just plays themself...? What are we hoping for here...a tortured portrayal of a primary school teacher who has resorted to singing bible stories to children as a way to fund her crystal meth addiction?

^Arguably SS always plays herself and has done for a long time.Hated her gurning,OTT clowning in FG and when I saw it with Natasha it felt like a much better show. Was listening to her first CD again the other week and even with ‘For Forever’,she adds a giggly and slightly creepy outro to it.Somebody needs to have the guts to rein her in.For some reason I keep thinking of Sir Roger Moore pulling out of AOL in terms of her Joseph participation.Just instinct...hope I am wrong. She looked askew, bewildered and awkward in the BGT clip.Watched it again and I think the costume was re-cycled from Billy Elliot’s dance teacher in the movie. Why didn’t someone veto that costume for the role of Narrator. In other news, the BGT final has Boyle and Banjo’s Boys to ‘entertain’ us,I believe.Should be OK as long as Olly Murr-ders every song he ever sings, doesn’t rock up!

musicalmarge is on a roll! AMEN! I know we're all saved because she's giving us the gospel on musical theatre performance standards! I promise to remain silent because musicalmarge is doing the good lord's work. Just look at the comments on the What’s on Stage Facebook site. It seems most people agree that it was dreadful. It’s not about me giving gospel - simply about what is good and bad!

Parts of that were just dreadful. Jason wasn’t as bad as I expected. I really, really hope Sheridan isn’t playing Potiphar’s wife, or that it’s something they decide against in rehearsal.
The coat looked nice.

Yes, but then pick someone who doesn't add all the giggles and arm waving, and who doesn't desire to be a woman-of-the-people more than she desires to do the role well. Sometimes you need to get out of the way to play a role. I loved her in Legally Blonde, but she's trying too hard to be the nation's sweetheart recently, and that's what irks people.

There does seem to be a deliberate strategy to make SS into a national treasure. Problem is, you can’t do that. It has to happen organically. It’s all very forced and clumsy.

For those who are interested in this sort of thing: Jacob and Sons was a tone lower than usual (D instead of E) Any Dream Will Do was a tone higher than usual (D instead of C for JD and Mead/D Flat for Donny Osmond). It’s possible that Any Dream Will Do was only in a higher key this evening to make for a cleaner segue between songs, and could return to C or D flat in the show. It’s not surprising that Jacob and Sons is a tone lower. Belting high E’s is a tough ask for anyone playing the narrator, let alone somebody not necessarily known for consistent high belting. If the person you cast can't sing the role, you have cast the wrong person. She wasn't even able to sustain the line at the lower tone.
I've always found that thinking very narrow - "the score must be sung as written" level of sacrosanctness.
There should be some freedom to make minor tweaks to accomodate a good actor and performer who perhaps cannot hit a few of the highest or lowest notes.

Dame Judi Dench wasn't note perfect with "Send In The Clowns", but it was damn good.

Dame Judi Dench wasn't note perfect with "Send In The Clowns", but it was damn good. Send In The Clowns was not written for a singer. It doesn't have a big range and certainly nothing to belt. Unlike alot of Joseph.
