Phew. That was pretty horrendous. It was like a jazzercise class. I’ll skip this production.

Not good...Lordy...
It's not going to have any negative impact on ticket sales though. This moment will be forgotten and the coach parties from around the nation will still make it a sell-out.
Plus for fans of it, in the post-dancercize interview, Jason said
"We're STARTING at the Palladium for 3 months"
Do we know where the gym class is off to after the LP yet?

Let’s be honest here though. If the show REALLY comes to be that bad, there’s no way that it’ll run swimmingly for 12 weeks with people paying £100+ for tickets. Something has to turn around.

However I say this it’s going to sound bitchy and condescending, but there are plenty of people who are big enough fans of those two that it won’t matter if there performance is good or not. I know because I am one of them (Not a fan of the two in this production but someone who has seen less than stellar performances in less than stellar shows but insisted it was fab because I loved the performer(s).)

I agree with pretty much everything that’s already been said about the embarrassing spectacle on BGT, but I was saddened to see Sheridan Smith caught up in it.
It’s easy to forget what brilliant performances she’s delivered in the past, both on stage and TV. She is a very talented woman who looks to me like she needs a bit more time out of the spotlight.
Whoever thought it was a good idea for her to do that toe-curling TV bump and grind special on ITV last year ,followed by that faux documentary made a very bad judgement call. By looking at her performance on BGT, it looks like her involvement in Joseph may not be such a good idea either.
It’s really uncomfortable watching someone who is capable of great things being put in a position where they’re not at their best to put it mildly. Judging by that BGT clip, I think she might come in for another load of negative criticism, which won’t do her any good at all.
She seems pretty fragile to me in her last few TV appearances and I really hope doing Joseph doesn’t end up being another mistake for her both personally and professionally.

As I have said before, these TV excerpts for WE shows rarely work for some reason.
Even a giant LED screen and tons of golden ticker tape could not disguise what an all time low this was!
The positives - the ensemble seemed incredible - hard working, enthusiastic and full of energy and I liked the new coat and Jac seemed likeable and personable - all that is required from the role I suppose but I wasn't especially keen on his voice - too much vibrato and I trust he is going to the gym!
As for the rest, well the costumes looked like they had raided Primark! What was Sheridan wearing? The "choreography" was a mess. The vocals from Sheridan and Jason were woeful. She was flat, shouting and out of breath and hadn't done anything - she was noticeably absent for most of the "movement"! She has done some amazing stage work in the past but this looks to be a mistake. I hope she is well.
I know they have 4 more weeks of rehearsal and a lot can happen in that time but they knew they were doing this promotion on BGT and should have rehearsed it to within an inch of its life! There is no excuse! It simply is not good enough at the ticket prices for this. Surely the production values have to be better than this?

If the person you cast can't sing the role, you have cast the wrong person. She wasn't even able to sustain the line at the lower tone. I agree in principal, but this show is always different, there isn’t necessarily “the way it’s written”. Laurie Beechman, for example, sang it lower again in C, because the arrangement was completely different. Just because SS sings it a tone lower, doesn’t mean she “can’t sing the role”. Transposition of this nature happens way more often than you might think. Sustaining the notes, I suspect, will come in time. This is only after 1 (or 2) weeks of rehearsals. You will NOT compare the late great Laurie Beechman to Sheridan Smith. I'm just amazed that people are finally starting to realize how much of an incapable musical theatre performer Sheridan Smith is. It took you long enough.

Has Sheridan upset the costume department?? It did nothing to make me want to see it. Such a shame. She looked as if she'd got one of Sam Bailey's hand me down jumpsuits from her X-Factor run. It did nothing for her figure and if anything made her look larger than she probably is especially alongside a skinny Joseph and little Dec.

I'd rather focus on her performance and not her size.
But not to single her out, everyone else seems awful. I actually stopped watching by the time Donovan appeared. Then came back a few minutes later because it was too much to take it all at once. The new kid is nothing to talk about, and the choreographer's idea of a dance number is jump jump jump clap turn jump jump jump clap turn.

Shezza,Jace and the rest imminent on BTG results show tonight. I am sure Andrew Lloyd Webber and the team are cringing - Sheriden was horrendous in that BGT clip, she can’t sing the role!!! I’m sorry but she looks uncomfortable and lacks grace physically too. Jason Donovan also struggled in a song that was too low and again physically very awkward. DREADFUL.......

Looks like ALW & co are scraping THROUGH the bottom of the barrel.
"Energy" is surely a pre-requisite for such a show, not a quality to be considered the highlight! Surely if you just want energy you watch the Olympics?
Looks like the "technical difficulties" are back...

From looking at the website, the brothers AREN'T Kids... www.josephthemusical.com/our-people/cast/They also haven't named who the baker, butler, jacob, mrs potifar and potifar are. Was the number on BGT bad? yes...yes it was...mainly because SS was ahead of the music as she was singing to track and i agree from a poster above that the end of the notes were clipped. ALW has his name all over this and he wouldn't want to put out an inferior product. I thought JD was fine and Jac was wonderful. Whether you like him or not, he has some of the most successful shows that have ever run, and from what i hear, this production will transfer to an other WE venue or to Broadway when the Palladium run is over.

After watching the performance on BGT, I am glad I didn't spend £80 on a ticket to see this. Like a lot of people here, seeing the 1991 Palladium version was my introduction to musicals, and I think I'd rather just keep my memories of that production instead. Nostalgia is a wonderful thing. I liked Sheridan Smith in Legally Blonde and Funny Girl, and really like her as an actress and person, but I wasn't excited about her casting in this. And unfortunately last night's performance did nothing to change that. I don't think it's the right role for her, and a bad choice by the production team. In fact, a lot of the choices they seem to have made for this production, based on last night's performance, are bizarre. And Jason Donovan's performance was just weird. Yes, they have only just started rehearsing, and as people have said, these short televised excerpts rarely do a show justice. But still...

Wow! Actually, I disagree! I watched Funny Girl several times and found her performances pretty damn wonderful to be honest. From the reviews of others I was far from being the only one who thought that.
Yes, her and Jason may not be the best singers in the world. They never have been and I doubt they have ever claimed to be. Why people suddenly expect them to be absolutely wonderful singers all of a sudden I am unsure. They are what they are and the casting directors would have been fully aware of their capabilities when they were cast.
I am no expert on every Joseph production since the beginning of time like some of you but the many tour versions I have seen recently have been very like a panto. Ten performances a week, three a day back to back. It's hardly high brow entertainment. A singing Elvis? Come on.
I'll be booking. There may be off key notes, there may be this there may be that but theatre does not always need to be over analysed to every single detail. It is essentially about enjoyment! Sometimes people on here appear to have forgotten that. You pay thousands of pounds on theatre but don't seem to enjoy it very much. You do enjoy constantly looking for all the flaws in it though. The target audience of this show aren't like that. The target audience are normal people, not the likes of us. They'll just go and watch. And enjoy. For that, I envy them.

This was discussed a few pages back. Only seven brothers are listed on the cast page, but Joseph had eleven brothers. The remaining brothers are apparently being played by kids, which was certainly the case last night on BGT.

I'm sure ALW is counting the pennies rolling in and feeling just fine 😜 I mean I don't think it was total car crash, but it just wasn't particularly good. But looking at the commments on twitter the show will be just fine. Anyone who's a fan of Sheridan or Jason seems delighted with the performance so they're gonna bring the punters in, and I'm sure it will be a fun night at the theatre!

Just watched it now. Camp as tits, colorful and great fun. Jo public are going to lap this up. I dont think they need to worry at all. After all this was never going to be high brow entertainment but it's a real crowd pleaser. Sheridan and Jason were fine and in a months time they will be a lot better and I thought Joseph has a lot of potential. Bless him. Not at all upset that I've paid £75 for my ticket and cant wait for the mega mix. Might even get up and bop along.

ALW may be counting the pennies, but has he given up on any kind of credibility?
That medley was a West End Happy Meal- and I don't mean that as a compliment.
(incidentally what a weird place to start the lyrics- a huge build up and then jump into the introduction of the brothers. I know time is limited but it just shows the sloppiness of the adaptation)

Basically the most manic parts of the show all blended into one 5 minute segment - that was never going to look good was it?
Having said that though, I think in the context of the whole show this will work fine. Jac Yarrow sounded great! Sheridan - not brilliant, I need to stop comparing her to Linzi Hateley as they are very different performers and in terms of vocals and subtlety SS cant match her, but I do think she will bring a lot of the fun side to the role. Overall, the whole cast looked and sounded like they had all been overdosing on red bull in the hour before the performance. Hopefully by the time the show opens they will have the balance right between keeping the energy levels high but keeping the performance tight.

The "bless him" is a little patronising, given he was the best thing about that performance.
