Everyone knows how big a fan of Sheridan I am, and even if I were to see the show she would be the only reason, but I still don't feel the desire to see this at all. I think it may just be a spur of the moment, can't find another matinee so may as well see this decision.

Was really hoping when Sheridan was mentioned a pages back that it wasn't true. Swore years ago that I would never go see Joseph live again, I'll be at the first preview now.

Inserting comedy for the Narrator? Really? Its not Funny Girl. No desire to enter the general debate, but I would say there's a lot of comedy in how Maria Friedman is used as the narrator in the filmed version.

Sheridan could have her pick of a lot of roles and this seems a slightly funny choice. I always think of the narrator as being someone a bit younger than Sheridan and I'm also unsure if it suits her vocally. It could be appealing as it's not a physically challenging role for her and the salary is likely to be good too.

Is there likely to be an alternate Narrator like in the previous London run?

Oh god no.
This is SUCH a tough sing. Others have made it look easy, but the range and stamina needed for it is deceptively crazy.
How is she going to manage it?

yes, the score will need to lowered a little but so what?! So what? Part of what made Joseph so good was the thrilling vocals of the Narrator. Now they're gone, whats the point?? Still, i'm sure she will sell some tickets and that's what its all about at the end of the day. I just wont be buying any.

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat Starring Sheridan Smith as the Narrator.
Or
Sheridan Smith starring as the Narrator in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
But is she going to wear the loincloth.

I don’t wish to hear her murdering these songs thanks. Still recovering from Funny Girl. Exactly

You lot can be really unnecessarily negative sometimes... Why is it unnecessary? It's an opinion. And people shouldn't be put down for having a different one to someone else.

I think she’s a great choice. Certainly happy enough to get me back to the Palladium for this regardless of who else is in the cast.

I think it's an interesting choice, not understanding all the negativity towards her.

I love Sheridan Smith and thought she was great in Legally Blonde and Funny Girl. But it was her acting and comedy that stood out for me in those roles - and the singing was fine. I'm not sure how much they can actually change the role of the Narrator for this production, but it's more of a singing role than an acting role, so her casting doesn't overly excite me.
Hopefully they'll offer rush/day tickets for this (I don't think row A has been put on sale yet) - I have wonderful memories of the 1991 Palladium production, but won't pay full price for this just to relive my youth.

I mean, if Keith Jack can play the narrator on a full scale national tour then I’m sure as hell sure Sheridan can. The score won’t have to be lowered as much either!

I think she could be really good. Saw her in Legally Blonde, Funny Girl and Flare Path and she was excellent in all 3 of them, just my opinion of course. I find her to be a very charismatic performer.
Vocally Preeya Kalidas was a very weak Narrator last time I saw Joseph. Really think Sheridan Smith will sing it better.

I liked Sheridan a lot both times I saw her - for me the disappointment stems from the fact that the Narrator is such a wonderful "breakthrough" role for a young MT performer, the way it was for Linzi Hateley back then, so I'm sad that nobody is getting that opportunity now. Though if they reverse it - cast a name for the Narrator and then give a young male performer his big break as Joseph (instead of making this the star casting to draw punters), I suppose that's fine, too.

I went to bed early after all the stress of Evan Hansen so missed all the news. I'm sure you can guess I'm rather thrilled about this and whatever people think of her she is going to sell those tickets big time. I've also heard that she has got some cameo roles for all her dogs. They will be the flock of sheep in little knitted costumes.

Well it is an interesting choice. I see it fairly on in the previews and am looking forward to it. Sheridan is a great actress. Disappointed the rest of the cast has not been announced.

I find her to be a very charismatic performer. Vocally Preeya Kalidas was a very weak Narrator last time I saw Joseph. Really think Sheridan Smith will sing it better. Indeed; so Preeya Kalidas (who is a competent singer) was disappointing in this - I think people dismiss it as a 'fun' show and don't realise what a tough sing it is. She was replaced by Jenna Lee James who has lungs of steel and absolutely nailed it. (I think possibly Preeya got the gig as the whole thing was a tribute to Stephen Pimlott and of course they had all worked together with ALW on Bombay Dreams - in which incidentally Preeya was great). I also do like Sheridan very much. She's a great actor, her TV is brilliant and I also enjoyed her in Legally Blond and Funny Girl. But for me personally as I've said, I love a narrator with killer vocals! And that's not her. Her singing is much more bluesy and much less classic MT. Anyway, absolutely love this show so am looking forward (hopefully!) to being pleasantly surprised by SS! Now - bring on the Joseph announcement :-)

Obviously it was my comment that was deleted. Can we only say positive things about performers and musicals now? People must must realise when talking about casting we are not talking about the actual person but the suitability for the role and often the role that’s been played by a certain type, size, colour, singing style and voice, look, tone, height, personality for 30 years. Sheriden is very talented and she was great in Funny Girl - but we have the right to say that she isn’t the right match for the Narrator in a show we’ve all seen dozens of times (or have even been in). I’m all for not being nasty or hurtful but to white wash any slightly negative comments is a dangerous alley to go down.

I’m torn here. I love SS and the Narrator is one of my most cherished roles for what he show (and the role) meant to me as a child. But I can’t help but think she is just not the best casting for the role as this person needs to be the best singer in the show (Joseph can speak sing most of his lines if necessary). The Narrator needs to be the bridge between the audience and the story, therefore needs a calm, authoritative yet vibrant and empathetic nature and I think SS has the warm likeable side but I’m hopeful she is directed to bring out a grounded and direct delivery whilst maintaining her quirks and likeable nature.
When done right, this show can be joyous and poignant - most of the time it is fluffy and vacuous. Let’s hope this production turns out to be the former.
