Pauly’s replacement in SiX (US) got good word so curious if Pauly returns to SiX or stays with an Evita transfer if a transfer happens. Hmm, starring in West End or “originating” a Broadway role. Not bad choices if there are choices to be made. I'm pretty sure she said she was going back into SiX in the interview I heard on Friday.

The view is side on through railings if you don't bag a space further back. People are moaning about too many allowed to sit there, too. It's better than nothing, though, just sit further back and on the side near the aisle not the shrubbery. Oh, and take the "high numbers" side if you prefer shade to sun. Does it refer to the matinee as well? I'd like to see it on Wednesday, but don't fancy being in the sun in these temperatures. Also, does it matter which grass bank (left or right)?

I'm still pondering this three weeks after seeing it. I didn't hate it but nor do I love it. It really does have one or two "wow" moments but how I wish we could have had that Australian revival of the peerless Hal Price production.

I love Evita and it has such a brilliant score. Sadly this new production was over produced, over directed and the American girl who played Eva screeched through the entire show. (Don’t they have British actresses?)
Too many balloons, too many streamers, too many fireworks, too many bells and whistles and too much imagery and symbolism - in short it tried too hard to be different. An amazing ensemble, the atmosphere of the park incredible as always and a hot cast - but gosh I just wanted it to be still and simple. Don’t Cry For Me Argentina was sang in her knickers. hahaha.....
Still most of my friends in my group enjoyed it and most agreed about Eva’s voice - I just wish they had cast a different leading lady and calmed down on the streamers and confetti. 6/10

Flashy production which certainly entertains but the casting and costumes let this down badly. I know it's how the director wants to interpret it but it doesn't work for me. Evita, the character let alone the historical personage, is not a Britney Spears wannabe dancing about. Peron's relationship to her is meant to be of an older experienced man who needs glamming up (I remember Joss Ackland being convincing in the role), as has been mentioned on this thread Ektor Rivera is simply too young. He looks younger than his much-younger spouse. Samantha Pauly is, vocally, a good Evita and captures the strength and vulnerability of the role well. She is not helped by not being made to look like Evita until the last moment. It is a powerful tableau but comes at the expense of the rest of the evening, Evita did not become Evita just before she died, she grew into the role much as Elizabeth I gradually morphed into Gloriana. Trent Saunders started off with a quavery voice but he picked up and gave a high-energy performance before he was Jesus Christ Superstarred at the end. Che is, to me, an annoying character because even as conceived he is Che and not Che ie the visual trappings of the character but not much more. I suppose at the time the musical was written (this was before Maradona and Galtieri) Rice reckoned that apart from the Perons there was only one Argentinian recognisable by many in UK and that was Che. Maybe that's how he came to be "selected" for the role. Why did she have an American accent apart from the word “Argentina” where she put on a Spanishy accent? That made us a laugh...

Trent Saunders off both shows today -- his u/s Jon Tsouras was terrific and the show tonight was in absolutely thrilling shape. The choreography looks better from further back, and Jon Clark's lighting rivals David Hersey's work on the original, which is saying a lot.

Saw the matinee today. Loved it. I really enjoyed that it (literally) strips away the iconography until the last moment - the idea that it’s showing you the real woman without the armour of her glamour helps the critique of her come through.
It felt very political - very much about how grifters and chancers can fool the public into adoring them.
I didn’t have any problem with a young Peron. An age difference isn’t the point - the power difference is. I thought the staging really helped to sell that.

I know better to judge a production then by a 30 second video clip... but damn, if I was in the UK there's no way I'd miss that... and now I'm pissed there's not a new recording. Want to hear new voices singing this classic score

When I saw that Che was being understudied by Jon Tsouras I was initially a little concerned but I thought he was superb. Nice to see the thunderous applause from the rest of the cast during the bows. This is the third London show I've seen in 2019 which has been "reimagined" from the way I knew and loved them from previous productions, the others being Sweet Charity at The Donmar and Joseph at The Palladium. In all three cases I've considered the new version to be the best ever so plaudits to all the talented, creative people out there !

Thank you so much harry for giving me the rundown of loud bits in this show. Your warnings definitely prepared me for them. In the end, although I did get a fright at the initial round of confetti canons and pyros, everyone else did too so I didn’t feel like a lemon. It is funny going into this having read reports here about the show and being surrounded by the posh older patrons at the Open Air Theatre going in expecting something a bit more traditional. As a whole piece I really enjoyed it. Like @theatremonkey pointed out previously it takes a while to understand what this production is and why choices were made. I thought that Che and Eva’s vocals were strongest (and very good indeed) more in the second half when it gets really demanding. The choreography is excellent and the ensemble are on it throughout. The orchestra sounded great and some of the big brassy moments sounded perfect especially given the outdoor setting. My favourite thing about the Open Air Theatre is how, after sunset, the surrounding environment complements the productions. Last year in Little Shop the lighting through the trees made it feel as though we were really going to end up inside the plant. With Evita the rustling of the trees and leaves falling worked well in the haunting final twenty minutes. The production numbers were the highlights for me and were full of energy and innovative staging. The Montage at the end was really like being in a nightmare and worked incredibly well. Its so refreshing seeing another version of this musical. Hats off Regent’s Park. Another hit.

I saw this last night and completely adored it! If I had enough money and a guarantee the weather would hold I'd book again in an instant.
I'd only ever seen the film, so didn't have much to compare it to, but now all I want is a cast recording of this production (and JCS!) I thought Che and Eva were fantastic and I really enjoyed the choreorgaphy - especially the tango during I'd Be Surprisingly Good for You (I think) and the dancer in The Art of the Possible was amazing, just so strong. I also really enjoyed And the Money Kept Rolling In for Che's performance and the whole look of the piece.
Just fabulous!

Rumour has it she wasn't impressed but was polite. But then again she didn't sound crazy about the Grandage production either. I was working at the Adelphi at the time and remember her being asked on the opening night what she thought of the 2006 production. She replied something like: 'It's very different. When I was in the original production I blah blah blah...' She went on and on about the original production and said hardly nothing about the new one. It was hilarious. Never got to see the interview when it was shown on TV, but I imagined they shortened it. It must be something with the original Evitas - LuPone is just as, shall we say, creative in giving faint praise while highlighting how great she was in the original and no one does it the same (or could anymore) blah blah blah… To be fair to Ms Paige, although she does of course like talking about her own experience and kept comparing the Adelphi production to Hal Prince's, she was generous to the production at Elena Roger when the Adelphi production opened. I have video footage from the night where she raved (some quotes: "Michael Grandage has done a great job", and "Elena Roger is superb"), which was unexpected given that she said beforehand she wasn't sure whether she wanted to see a different production.

I thought this production was pretty appalling - a great serious musical turned into a cheesy dance spectacle. It's hard to know if the cast were any good as, given the over-the-top staging, they had no chance to create characters or engage meaningfully in any of the drama of the piece. I suppose Jamie Lloyd figured the story was so well known that he didn't have to bother telling it. But not so - the lady sitting next to me didn't have clue as to what was going on. First there was the dismantling of Sweet Charity at the Donmar and now this. What's next?
