I was at the cancelled King Lear matinee on Saturday 4th August and was fortunate enough to witness Ian McKellen's entertaining impromptu solo turn instead. He is reprising something very similar on a tour next year which includes a show at the Duke of York's. It is directed by Sean Mathias, whom (forgive the name drop) I had the great pleasure to sit beside at The Inheritance and who was absolutely charming.
The date for the Duke of York's is Thursday 7th March.

There are many dates in London, from both the Lyttleton and the Olivier at the NT, to Above the Stag and the Donmar (last one for 25 and under only, allocated by ballot) It would be a demanding tour for anyone - 10 months on the road - but bloody good going for an 80 year old! www.ianonstage.co.uk |

Wow, £75 to see him at the Watermill! I was thinking I might look at the dates and pick venue according to where he'll be on my favourite, but maybe this calls for a full spreadsheet including ticket costs. I want somewhere not too far to travel, ticket cost significantly less than £75, and a large enough theatre that booking shouldn't be an absolute living nightmare...  |

Sir Ian did a similar show at the Park Theatre last year, the number of London theatres alone is staggering but it’s good he’s gone for a range of venues rather than one huge venue.

I've got tix for Above the Stag, where the show will have a somewhat queerer tinge and it's a nice small venue. £60 there but that includes a glass of prosecco beforehand and a party after with drinks and canapés (apparently).
The NT dates go on sale next Tuesday to members and Thursday to the public. The Lyttleton shows are in January and seem to be at normal NT prices, the Olivier show is in September and is the gala closing performance of the tour, with tickets at £75, £100 and £200...

The Bridge has got in on this act as well with tickets cheaper than the NT - I just got a reasonably central side second row for £25...
I bet Above The Stag will be worth the extra cash though.

It's cool that he's issued a personal little blurb specific to every venue. Logistically the range of venues is very impressive. I'm surprised news of it didn't leak out earlier!

It will be an experience for him. I would imagine the audiences at Above the Stag and in Ballymena will be somewhat, different.

Looks like I need to wait for monday for most London ones to be available without membership. Sadly no local theatres for me, a small I intimate theatre would be very cool.
