It was widely praised and liked. My personal preference would be for The Writer to win though or, failing that, John. |

I've seen hardly any of those plays, yet have liked much of what I have seen in the last year. So, for those un-nominated and not on this prize nomination list, don't worry — I was among people who probably did like you!

Hello? Is that the police? Come quickly, Kyle Soller has just been robbed. Yeah but it *is* the Evening Standard awards which seem to be a law unto themselves. I can't take them seriously ever since that ridiculous picture of Mr Lebedev lying draped on the floor in front of all the celebs like Imelda. And ever since Nicole won over Denise Gough. |

The rule at the ES awards is that the most famous person who is able to turn up on the night will win.

Well, Fiennes's win is pretty amazing given that Sir Ian is a great friend of the proprietor of the paper (!) -- but maybe that would have looked just TOO craven. And Okonedo much less well known than Laura Linney or Carey Mulligan, so I would say both A&C victories go against the Standard grain.

Laura Linney and Sir Ian were there, as they're in the after show party pics ("in association with Harrods") along with those fine thespians Lady Kitty Spencer and Viscountess Weymouth, according to the Standard website.
Nice to see Vanessa R out on the town too (announcing an award, no less), given that the reports on The Inheritance thread say she hasn't been well enough to perform for days.
Side note: I see that The Stage silently corrected their winners' article this morning to show Hamilton as the winner of Best Musical. Still think it's a bit odd how they could get that so wrong...

I am just catching up with these.
I'm not sure it was predictable that Sophie Okonedo and Ralph Fiennes would win for Antony and Cleopatra. If they'd gone for the predictable, as in most starry, surely it would have been Carey Mulligan and Ian McKellen. I wouldn't have chosen either of the winners, or McKellen or Mulligan, but that is hardly the point.
I can't see how anyone can object to Hamilton winning, or Jamael Westman. Nine Night likewise. An award for the design of The Jungle doesn't seem misplaced. Best play for the Inheritance might not be everyone's choice, but it is far from controversial.
Company deserved recognition, and the best director award seems as good a way as any to do it. Marianne Elliott is an under appreciated talent. I wouldn't have chosen Rosalie Craig for best musical performance, but it's not an outrage by any stretch of the imagination.
That leaves the Lebedev lifetime award, or whatever it's called, to Cameron Mackintosh, which may not be exciting, but is probably deserved.
In other words, there's nothing edgy here, and the glitz of the occasion is OTT and in some ways only loosely connected to theatre, but I can't see that the results were either very predictable or very hilarious.
