About the sets for the upcoming Broadway transfer, I had read this, though with a grain of salt given the Daily Mail's reputation. "Mackintosh explained that he’s waiting to sort out a Broadway transfer for Miss Saigon, currently running at the venue. He said he intends to take the sets being used in London to New York; otherwise, the move would be too expensive." That article is actually from last June - I think some things have changed since then. The Broadway transfer and UK tour are both definitely happening. I think it's presumed that the London set will tour and a new one will be conjured up for Broadway, but I guess it could work out either way.

Love it! Lea Salonga is immensely talented, one of my favourite performers by far (I booked to see Allegiance in NY purely to see her. One of the best decisions I've ever made, despite the show only being so-so in my opinion!). Both her acting and singing are hugely affecting!

I'd LOVE to see Lea in her own concert here. She only ever seems to do concerts in New York. Surely she'd sell out a few nights in one of the theatres?

She'd sell very successfully in London. If it was a Leicester Square gig she can sell out a few performances easily. I'd love it if she does it and maybe guest star Rachelle Ann Go and Eva Noblezada. That'll be fab.

(I posted this in another thread but I wanted it to place it here too, because it is about Miss Saigon and the discussion about the film will probably continue in this thread.)
I am really looking forward to a Miss Saigon film, but only if they go all the way with great singers and great actors and not the "toned down, constantly switching between acting and singing in 1 sentence, Les Mis film" way. Because that makes it silly. It is too literal for this material.
This artform is per definition not literal, it is a triumph of the fantasy. Treating it as such creates raw emotion. We should see and hear things that aren't really there, because at many points in this story they are singing about something that is in their mind. ("This is the hour" after Kim shot Thuy, is a moment of complete horror/bewilderment in Kim's mind. Show it. I can see her standing in a undefinable space with a huge choir of ghosts singing. The nightmare, last night of the world, etc) I can imagine wonderful elaborate cinematography, special effects, ghost faces singing, smoke that turns into an image, moving camera's, big black spaces, romantic scenes that look better than life, etc. Last night of the world feels like a dream for them. Show it. Make it theatrical, big and muggy, also with the sets. Create a bigger than life sub-reality to make the essence of this material work. Realize that certain softly sung notes or soaring notes work as emotion evokers/actors themselves. Use them, act through them instead of trying to act in spite of them. Speaking 4 words and vibrate on the 5th is not the solution.
Also, we don't have to see the person mouthing all the words into the camera at every occasion, certain songs can be, in parts used as a kind of soundtrack/voice-over. I can imagine during the pre-recorded "I still believe", we see scenes of Kim and Chris that we know have happened, but haven't seen before, this is their thoughts being sung. They could also use very creative cinematography in the transition to Ellen in the USA in that song. Or in the nightmare scene.
I feel that there is a way of musical film-making that has not been done yet. A way that uses fantastic singing in a very filmic and theatrical way. A way that has been done in animation, but not in live action yet.
I feel the only films that came close to this approach were Evita, Moulin Rouge and Chicago, but still not quite there and the singing in those was mediocre. Imagine if both things are outstanding. That would be epic.

I found this clip of the US tour today, seems like a great production.
I love all the lyric changes in the London revival, but in this particular scene I wish they had kept: "It's done, it's planned, the girl is smart, she'll understand". It sounds so much more painful than "Kim is smart". Also, "we will do what is right, right for him, right for us, right for Kim", instead of the new version. I also kind of love the original intro of the confrontation more, the way the scene starts feels more natural this way.
This scene is also very well done in the Manila version:

Anyone heard of tour dates yet? No tour dates have been officially confirmed yet as far as I'm aware, however I believe both Dublin and Birmingham have published "coming to this theatre in 2017"-type adverts in their current brochures.

Yeah I would've thought it be the big theatres that it goes to, and stays there for a month or so

I actually have a physical reaction when he sings that song.
Going all the way with the material really is something special. Fully embracing it. Real acting, real singing, real emotion. The scenes in Miss Saigon can be described as little concerts full of emotion.
There is not 1 instance where I feel he is struggling with notes, in fact, he uses them/turns them into a form of natural acting that feels extremely truthful and emotional. Like god is actually near him in certain notes.
This is what real singers can achieve.

So I'm sure this has already been answered, but I can't get my head around it... it this going to be a video of the gala concert thing, or is it going to be a filmed on stage version of the actual show, as if you were seeing it in the theatre? The fact that multiple incarnations of the cast seem to be involved (original revival cast, and then cast from the show just before it closed) is throwing me off. I'm sure I'm just being oblivious but could someone clarify?

From what I know, on the day of the anniversary gala the entire show was filmed including the special finale with Lea and co. and just before they closed they brought back some of the leads who'd previously left (Rachelle and Kwang-Ho, not sure about the others) to film bits they might have missed during the gala, but with the current ensemble presumably to save on the cost of bringing back everyone who'd left at cast change. What we're going to see in the cinema is the full gala performance (show + finale), with the extra filmed bits cut in to make the performance more complete.

I thought only Rachelle and Alistair came back for those 3 filming days (for additional footage, close-ups etc). Kwang-Ho was already in another show in his home country.
This is the first time I heard that they filmed the final performance (with cast change) too. They could still use footage of Kim and The Engineer, their solo scenes and their scenes together. Same goes for John.
The thing I don't understand is, if they use the full 25th performance videotaping as the basis of this (which I think is great, because it was a spectacular performance, Eva was in much better shape vocally compared to both the cd version and the final performance and other times I've seen her), then how are they going to fit in the newly filmed material? Because I can't imagine Rachelle and Alistair just walking in after a year and give that same performance vocally as they did on the 25th performance. So could it be that they will use most video footage, but ALL audio from the 25th? And that the actors had to lip-sync to their own vocals, so that the newly filmed video footage can be easily edited in?
Or did they just sing and film the scenes all over again so we might end up with a vocally different performance/energy than the 25th?
If they did the latter, I hope they fixed the wrong melody lines Eva sang. That is easy to fix with a few takes.
Does anyone have more info about this?
