I will try to pay more attention in future. They are clearly going down the Book of Mormon route of short extensions. Hahaha don't worry, I assumed it was until about July time too until I checked once I saw the booking had extended.

I just looked online and the calendar through September is built so I assume that the new booking period on Monday will go through September The new one on Monday will go until July. When it was initially booking until April, they had the calender made up till July just with no shows up. So when it gets nearer to July, they will extend to September most likely, and have dates selling through September but the calender up until December haha.

Go, viserys. They are on the same "level of enjoyment" for sure. "Bend It" was less conventional and more intellectually challenging as its culture was interesting, but this is probably a bit stronger musically and deeper in characterisation. I hated Bend it Like Beckham, one of the worst things I've seen in years and the closest I've come to walking out at the interval in a long time! So this comment makes me doubt whether I should bother seeing this one even more...! The show is exactly the same standard as Bend It yes - I didn't like both really... Very disappointed!!! ((((

Just seen this and all I've got to say is at least Bend it like Beckham got under away with the plot in the first act. {Spoiler - click to view} Apart from the Christmas song and the husband's death, the first act feels aimless. We only get to the meat (metaphorically) of the story by the interval. Basically stuff happens in the first act
Apart from the two leading ladies, the characters only really develop in the second act when they get their own solo numbers
And the most important thing that is lacking in the first act is the pathos needed for the husband's death that is the crux of the story. Not that I want a Calendar Girls musical to get serious about cancer. But still.
Only during the husband's solo number when he dies did I gain some pathos. Otherwise its only at the end of the musical that Gary Barlow's bland music rise to the opportunity
A perfect opportunity was the hospital scenes where Joanna Riding is singing about her growing concerns. Except for some reason the song is divided up, as the musical switches (literally across the stage) between her and some short light-hearted scenes with Claire Moore. Any momentum and poignancy is lost Only the in the second half does things pick up. There were bigger laughs (no prizes for guessing at what). The solo songs from the ladies and the number during the WYI meeting received rapturous applause. Rather manipulative songs I felt. A lot of the actors only stood out in the second act when their characters were finally able to develop. The show certainly belongs to Joanna Riding and Claire Moore who had great chemistry together. I'll come down the middle and give this 3 stars. Average at best, and if I was ever given a ticket to see this again I would only come for the second act.

Yes that was a bit spoilery in terms of what happens when and how, although I think because it's such a well-known story that some parts of the story will be discussed without spoiler tags.

That's not really fair, some of the most well known plays and musicals get spoiler tags or at least spoiler warnings because not everyone will be aware what happens.

As I said elsewhere, I would rather have separate spoiler threads for all shows but it's not feasible. This is a show based on a play, based on a movie, based on a true story (reminds me of Mystic Pizza in 30 Rock), so I expected some aspects of the plot to be discussed openly. I don't mind if everything has to go in spoiler tags though.

Its definitely a story people assume is known by most. On my visit I was sat next to a group of ladies who spent the 20 minutes before curtain up loudly discussing how the show would deal with various scenes in the film.

I don't think this is a show where you can say people should use spoiler tags - the film's been out for years and gets repeated very frequently on TV, and there have been previous productions of essentially the same story.
If it's a completely new musical with a plot derived entirely from scratch by the writers, then that would definitely be spoilery, as would talking about how a show does certain visual effects moments like I presume happens in Harry Potter given the subject matter. But I don't think anything with very public source material such as books or films can really be consider spoilery - more people will probably know the plot than most, so if people want to stay unspoiled then that's the type of situation where it pays to resist posting in the relevant thread until you've seen the show, which is easy enough to do.

Why do I get the feeling everyone has something against me on this damn board recently?! It's not difficult to use the spoiler tag, and out of respect and courtesy to those who may of not seen the film, why not use it rather than post a big spoiler, ruining it for someone who was looking forward to the show?!
... I'll remember these responses next time I see a show.

Apologies for that, and unless an admin can put spoilers into my post it can't be changed now
I haven't seen the play/film either. Sometimes its a fine line to tell whether something that happens in the first half of a story, which offsets the whole premise of the story, should be spoiled or not.

Can we just draw a line under this now please? This particular show has been spoiled for me a bit, but the person who posted has apologised, and didn't intend to upset. There is no point discussing it further, clearly most people, including one of the moderators of the board, are of the thought we can post spoilers whenever and wherever we please and thats fine.
I won't be doing it, but if others want to, feel free.

Daniel, if you don't want to discuss it any further, I suggest you don't take digs at people in your post, prompting people to respond. I am not attacking you, just making a friendly suggestion

Now back to The Girls. Can't believe those 5* reviews! Even with the best willl in the world it's "ok" (I think it's a load of old cobblers as you know) but five big ones? Never in a million years.

Also wonder if they will start doing dayseats or any kind of offers for this now that its open. The 25 quid tickets are up to £29.50 and for the new booking phase are only the back row of the upper circle. Pretty steep!

I actually feel like London critics are quite prone to giving good reviews especially to West End musicals. Certainly more than Broadway critics are and they have the better shows!
