Big fan of the Birmingham Hippodrome’s foyer! Always striked me as very well kept and fresh which I think suits the venue well

After years of trying the Sherman have finally made theirs into something vaguely hospitable.
The Exchange in Manchester is my favourite outside of the NT.

The worst foyer I've seen is the Arts in Cambridge where it's just a couple of corridors and a fence. Gorgeous theatre once you get inside but such a weird foyer area. When were you last there? They did a FOH rebuild a couple of years ago so I'm interested to know if you saw the previous version or if you saw the new one but are still not impressed?

I don’t really like the Edinburgh Playhouse foyer because it’s small and cramped, but the opulent red and gold colour scheme often gets me excited for a show, and it is cosy during the winter.
I swear to god the Circle bar has shrunk. In September last year it seemed like there were more tables, but then I saw Wicked there in May and all the seats were filled before the house opened, and the queue was stretching out into the main foyer.

NT and Barbican for me. Call me an old fashioned vampire hater but I like light, especially daylight

Foyer area of the new Kiln looking particularly fine this evening.
A great first impression as you walk in, plenty of space and seats.

New Victoria is great with loads of space and seating. I’m looking forward to seeing how the ROH is improved this autumn as it’s spaces were already good.
In London some of the amateur theatres have very spacious foyer areas, such as the Questors in Ealing or the Geoffrey Whitworth in Crayford.

I recently visited the Sunderland Empire, and oh my lord, it is such a beautiful house. The box office is in a separate space to the main foyer which means no crazy queues clogging up the foyer, and there are plenty of spaces to sit and chill in the bar, which is gorgeous. There are also plenty of toilets (for men anyway; the queue for the ladies' toilets in the foyer was stretching back into the stalls!) and the staff are lovely.
It's just a shame it's in Sunderland. I love the theatre but the city centre is a total dive. The High Street is littered with half-eaten kebabs and crisp packets, and cigarette butts, and it is generally full of post-war grey brutalist tower blocks.

I really enjoyed the Kings Cross Theatre - big open plan space, immaculate washroom facilities, an actual disused train line going through it...
Reasonably priced bar, plenty of staff, lovely art work all themed to the production. And at fringe prices for a couple of outstanding productions (The Railway Children and In the Heights).
Worst... probably the Majestic Theater on Broadway, so dark and grotty. Feels very seedy - which would play into the Phantomy-feeling if it wasn’t quite so ghastly.
Over here I never liked the Novello, pokey and smells funny. The Adelphi is just really poor in every sense. The foyer is a corridor ala The Queens and it’s no better when you get into the auditorium - not a good seat in the house.

The Theatre Royal in Glasgow has a wonderful new foyer, it opened about two years ago. A large extension out to the side of the building with a giant spiral staircase right up the centre, plenty of room to hang about in before a show. I recommend googling it to check it out.
I agree about the Edinburgh Festival, excellent space at the front with the large glass frontage.
My favourite London theatre foyer is the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. I loved the openness of it and the wide staircases. I like the foyer of the Gillian Lynne/New London also.

Yes - but the lobby space for the auditorium they built for 'Lazarus' was thoroughly horrible - not enough seats, nothing in it but an overpriced bar and an overpriced souvenir stand, and for "security reasons" you were asked to check in 45 minutes before the performance so it was basically just a holding pen with nothing to do in it except spend money. I mean, I get that it's a commercial enterprise and it's supposed to turn a profit over a relatively short run, but it was just so blatant.

Enjoyed the foyer at the Other Palace tonight.
I was seeing Eugenius with some friends and we loved the gin palace before the show (over 50 guns) and then loved it so much after the show that we were last to leave!
Even though it isn't huge the bar is great and we got a seat pre-show no problem.
I would love to try the Naughty Piglet restaurant upstairs (I will on my next visit)

What is the Queen’s theatre foyer like? We like to arrive at the theatre early to explore the foyer areas and have so far never been to the Queen’s.

I really dislike the Glasgow King's theatre. The auditorium is gorgeous, but Glasgow City Council and the Ambassador Theatre Group have totally neglected it in favour of the nearby Theatre Royal which has recently had an extension and now boasts a state-of-the-art foyer. The toilet facilities in the King's are gross and the whole building smells all musty with visible chipping paint.

You make a great point here and especially as it used to be my local and most regularly visited theatre, i'm surprised I never realised it before! The King's doesn't have much space outside of the auditorium so perhaps ATG are reluctant to refurb as they wouldn't be installing bigger bars to make them more money? A lot of people forget that it's a Matcham theatre...it would be wonderful to see it refurbished to former glory (at least the chipping paint)

Somebody will hopefully correct me if I'm wrong as it's been a while but I believe there is a bar one level up from the entrance in the glass frontage.

The toilet facilities in the King's are gross and the whole building smells all musty with visible chipping paint. The toilets have all now been renovated as well as the older bars (upper circle and gallery). I agree though that it still needs more attention, especially implementing air conditioning in all levels as it gets disgustingly hot during the summer, to a level where I don't think it should be legal, and that's not an exaggeration.

I recall one particularly cosy Summer afternoon years ago when my friend and I had chosen the absolute worst day to take in a matinee of Evita starring Marti Pellow (sigh) The auditorium of the King's was baking and all of the fire exits had to be opened. The performance started about half an hour late too! I've digressed far from the topic of this thread now!

Last time I visited the Edinburgh Playhouse (also ATG owned) the auditorium and toilets had been repainted as they’d been looking a bit worse for wear. I think it’s a similar situation at the King’s. The only thing in the Playhouse is they left the previous hand dryers instead of getting new ones - very slowwww.
