I agree with a few other posters - let’s not be too serious about it otherwise we could pick holes in every musical/play/film. I for one love Mrs Doubtfire, find it just as much fun as when it was first released. A really enjoyable family film and I hope this stage version does well. Fingers crossed for a UK transfer.

But what else is there to be ‘outraged’ by today? Certainly no real-world issues one could get behind and make a real difference. If only there were something happening to us all right now that was more important than adapting a fictional film into a fictional musical. 🙄🤦♂️
Of course this is a discussion board where we are at liberty to discuss stuff, important or not, but being in any way discriminated against/offended/harmed/held back by the socio-sexual or familial politics in ‘Mrs Doubtfire’ ? It isn’t on my list...

This is another one of those cases where I'm happy about individual casting, but boy is it white.

This is another one of those cases where I'm happy about individual casting, but boy is it white. Um, 25% of the adult principals are black? More than can be said for a lot of shows, and moreso than the original film was.

I was thinking about this recently and thought Andy Karl would make a great Stu Dunmyer!
But I also thought if he was to do it then they should make it Stu's story. And it's set in Punxsutawney. And Stu keeps waking up on February 2nd...Basically it's him returning to Groundhog Day and hopefully bringing it to London.

How come Book of Mormon always gets a free pass when it comes to problematic content? Its blatantly misogynistic, racist and isn’t even funny. THIS

A great show! First and foremost, it is FUNNY, plenty of laugh out loud moments which is just what you want in a musical. Sure a lot of it is nostalgia from the film but I was absolutely creased at certain moments.
Rob McClure is utterly fantastic. What a role he plays and he is rarely off stage the whole show, and when he is he’s probably quick changing!
The score is good, maybe a bit tame in parts but overall it services the story very well. The kids and Miranda were great and supporting cast very good too.
Deep down the show really emphasises that Daniel just wants to be with his kids and how the breakdown of relationships affects the kids.
One very strange musical number - I’m gonna refer to it as the “Mrs Doubtfire Hell Dream” - quite bizarre! The numbers I really loved included the “make me a woman” sequence and also the act one finale.
I can see this doing well on Broadway as it’s going to a moderate sized theatre. The audience here in Seattle lapped it up - the venue was packed!

The kids are great, but this doesn't sound like Something Rotten.
Eyes closed and subject matter being irrelevant, I would have guessed that this were from Beetlejuice.

I saw the second preview last night. It was basic AF.
When you adapt something so sacred - and Mrs Doubtfire is as sacred as it gets for me - you better bring a breath of fresh air to it, a new perspective or really elevate the material. This musical does none of these things.
The keyword in a musical is music. Kikrpatrick does not know how to compose a good tune, a melodious melody or a bopper. It's not modern, it's not classic, it's nothing at all. Rob McLure works his ass off, but I'm sorry to say that he's not charming or funny. The character Daniel is irresponsible, selfish, and potentially had his children mentally compromised. We chose to ignore this because of Robbin Williams. Rob McLure is just not cute, charming or funny enough to make us forgive his character's shortcomings. The gags they've given him are basic imitations of pop culture references (Gollum from Lord of the Rings, Borat, etc) and aren't invented originals that were created on the spot by Robbin Williams on the movie set.
The set was boring and conventional and looks exactly like the set of Tootsie down to Daniel's apartment, which is a shrunken version of the apartment in Tootsie. At least with Tootsie you had David Yazbeck's score (not his best, but still better than this), Sarah Stiles and Andy Grotelueschen's performances.
Nothing about Mrs Doubtfire was inventive, original or creative.

Previews resuming October 21, opening night on December 5.
Also looks like they’ve dropped the “Mrs” from the title in the marketing so is simply just “Doubtfire”.

And finally opening night on Broadway - two years on from the try-out.

Although it's good that the kids kept their jobs after two year's delay, my first reaction to pictures from the show was, why the hell would they need a nanny? Definitely seems to be a WHY did they bother to musicalize this type of show.

Mrs Doubtfire has just announced a hiatus on Broadway from 10th January until 14th March. Producer Kevin McCollum has released a statement explaining that this is best for the cast, crew and longevity of the show allowing them to have a longer run post March.
This does seem wise as these next few months are the hardest to sustain shows on Broadway even pre-pandemic.
Hope all of the cast, crew and theatre staff are ok!

Definitely seems to be a WHY did they bother to musicalize this type of show. I didn't think the child actors were too old for a nanny. If you're a busy mother it's good to have someone around to make dinner, and she did the cleaning too. Hell, I need a nanny too and I'm 60 years old. Maybe a Manny, lol. Why they musicalized the the story is because it allows for it. The lead male character is an actor. There's an incredible earworm in "There is Love". When the show reopens Rob will be the name at the top of the nominations. He's amazing. I'd like to see the show honored with a GLAAD awards as well.

I caught the show again last night. It is certainly tighter than Seattle and still very funny, with some new musical numbers and others dropped. Rob McClure totally steals the show. I think this will do some good business in the UK when it arrives.
