Musical of Mrs Doubtfire aiming for broadway, set to be directed by Jerry Zacs. Reported on playbill.com. I love the film so hope it’s done well as there’s great potential as a musical.

I'm looking forward to this, and I'm glad it's not the Hairspray dudes, or Jerry Mitchell or Jack O'Brien. But of course some diversity in the creative team would have been more welcome.
Mrs Doubtfire is absolutely one of my favorite childhood movies, if not favorite movie altogether. Robbin Williams just brought so much joy in that film and I've been waiting for a musical for ages. I doubt we will see this until at least 2020.

I both hate judging musicals before anyone has ever seen them AND am looking forward to the next musical that's not been adapted from a film.
"But, 49thAnd8th," you say, "There are movies adapted from books! And obscure films! And you really liked Groundhog Day!" To which I say... yes, I am a complex person, as are you.

That twitter post irks me somewhat. Why does everything boil down to sexist, racist prejudice? I' m not defending the chose but could it just be that maybe the creative team chosen were chosen for their proven ability to conceive and develop material and not because they're caucasian cock weilders*.
*probably isn't actually a word.

I'd love to see Brian D'Arcy James take the lead in this. And I absolutely LOVE Something Rotten so I'm excited to see that pair have a crack at this, but concede that some diversity in the creative team wouldn't have done anyone any harm.

This is finally happening in Seattle this autumn, prior to Broadway... www.5thavenue.org/show/mrs-doubtfireI have mixed feelings about turning this brilliant film into a musical, but nonetheless hope it will go well as I do with all new musicals. But I do love the "Content Advisories" for this on the above link (and it's not even opened yet!)... {Spoiler - click to view} Mrs. Doubtfire, like all brand-new musicals, is still being developed and its script will be undergoing changes during the rehearsal process.
Mrs. Doubtfire is based on the classic 1993 comedy film (which starred Robin Williams) in which a fun-loving but irresponsible father, faced with losing custody of his children, impersonates the perfect nanny in order to be with his family.
Mrs. Doubtfire is suitable for most audience members: concerned parents and theatergoers should peruse the following advisories carefully.
Brief and Partial Nudity: The audience sees a fleeting glimpse of an impulsive and prank-playing character’s bare butt as he moons the other characters.
Adult Language: This is mild for the most part. “Goddam” is heard a couple of times; also, “crap,” “damn it,” “piss you off,” “hell,” and “sh*t” (heard several times) are used when characters are frustrated. “Asshole” is also used as a character fights off a mugger.
Sexual References: These are also mild; sexual innuendoes are not explicit, but rather implied (sample: “Oh, wake up and smell the pheromones, dear. Business? Funny business. His dividends won’t be the only thing on the rise”).
Alcohol/Drugs: A character’s apartment is full of empty beer cans. Characters are seen drinking wine with dinner.
Violence/Scariness: A character goes after other characters (who prove to be hallucinations) with a skillet, a knife, and other implements; the effect is humorous rather than alarming.

Oh is this why Music Man is not happening sooner. I love Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster.
It will be fine I am sure

Ooo! Don't care for the musical, but he was fab in Beetlejuice, so I'm happy for him he gets this big break. Dang, now I may even have to take an interest...

I have high hopes for this one. A much more recognisable title than "Tootsie", and if I'm honest a much stronger story. Kate Baldwin was Miranda in the workshops so wonder if she will also join the full production.

You know I like Rob McClure, and I adore Kate Baldwin (if she gets cast) but is it only me who rolled their eyes at this?
Really, 2019 and once again we have a man dressing up as a woman for comedy effect. Maybe I'm overthinking it but I just read the plot on Wikipedia to remind myself and that is some deeply problematic borderline misogynistic sh*t. Essentially man doesn't get what he wants so blocks wife from hiring anyone else and dresses up as an elderly Scottish woman so he can hang around his kids which a Court have told him he can't.
Hopefully they will update it somehow because what we giggled at in 1992 is maybe not so acceptable now

How come Book of Mormon always gets a free pass when it comes to problematic content? Its blatantly misogynistic, racist and isn’t even funny.

The courts take a dim view on mental health (according to their presidents they go on to shoot people) so deny him rights too. Man gets so desperate that he has a complete breakdown and starts dressing as a Scottish woman to be close to his kids coz they are the only thing keeping him alive. Finally, during an ill fated meal out the enormity of what this poor man is going through comes crashing down on everyone and the cruel mother finally lets the man she married finally see his kids! And he gets a tv show too!!! See, u can really twist anything into anything else if I want to. The sky isn’t crashing down

How come Book of Mormon always gets a free pass when it comes to problematic content? Its blatantly misogynistic, racist and isn’t even funny. It came under a fair amount of criticism in the States when first released if I recall correctly. I think BOM gets more of a pass because it is so obvious that it is intentionally trying to push limits, offend, etc. as well as the fact that its creators are the South Park guys. Rightly or wrongly, the audience is in on the joke and understands that is all it is. The one area where people expected there to be intense outrage—poking fun at religion—ended up being not that big of a deal because despite all the jokes, they also show the power of belief. You raise an excellent point though about the difficulties in anticipating what will be seen as problematic and what may get more of a pass. Whether or not a character or plotline, particularly with ones in revivals or drawing on older source materials, needs adaptation for contemporary mores is not always 100% apparent, nor is how to do it in an acceptable manner.
