And yet when we get a British cast we get.... the cast of 9 to 5. No, we get Natalie McQueen... and those other people. Oi! Amber Davies wore a bikini on 'Love Island' and Louise lost 'Strictly Come Dancing'. Show some respect!

I don’t quite understand the need for people complaining about Katherine’s casting. There was no fuss of this kind when Adrienne was cast as Tina, Amber as Effie, Andy Karl as Phil Connors, Idina as Elphaba, Gavin Creel as Elder Price etc. And those are the examples that come to mind without giving it much thought, I’m sure there are more. I’m not familiar with Katherine’s work at all but from what I’ve read she was brilliant in the role on Broadway and that’s enough for me

It all sounds like South Park rednecks shouting "they took our jobs!"

Bloody Patti LuPone. How dare she take Joanne in Company, it should have gone to a British actress, I’m furious.*
*Said no-one.

And all those saying McPhee isn’t a name, she’s probably more of a name than LuPone to the majority of the British public. Several friends of mine atleast know her from Scorpion (which I haven’t seen)

She really isn't though. Smash was not big on Sky Atlantic at all and Scorpion wasn't a big hit for itv2 which is why it ended up on Netflix and then was cancelled. Sure the niche amount of people who watched those shows may know her buts that's a small pool of people to choose from and not enough to fill the Adelphi. And even then the majority of people who watch scorpion wouldn't know her by name.
I guess people maybe more annoyed/confused by her casting over some of the other previous American casting because this one makes less sense. Most of those mentioned previously have originated roles, received rave reviews, been award winners or be legends.

Not a single name mentioned in this thread would be a box office hit for this show.

Not a single name mentioned in this thread would be a box office hit for this show. Nor is the one they picked - who most UK theatre goers will never have heard of . There's plenty of reliably good UK actresses who could play the role well, and a lot of recordings of them singing from the show extremely well.
This is another symptom of US producers dominating the UK market, and just throwing in someone they know, rather than looking at the domestic talent that's as good or better.

Perhaps it’s the case where they offered her first refusal for London as part of enticing her to do Broadway? She is the biggest name (aside from Sara) who has played the name in New York.

I can understand that people have their own opinion on wether or not they like the casting which is totally fine. However there does seem to be a certain level of pettiness on Twitter with people putting #justiceforivy. Like others have said, is this any different to the numerous other times that American actors have gotten West End roles? Or British actors getting Broadway roles?

This sounds both sensible and highly likely. She may only be staying for 3 months or something to open the show and garner some press inches. It doesn’t matter if people have heard of her; she has a history and something to talk about on BBC Breakfast & Sunday Brunch etc. For so called theatre lovers, I think the naysayers doing it down before a note has been sung, need to have a word with themselves. It’s not some cheapo tour extension cheaply shoe-horned into a west end house. It’s new theatre. Embrace it, give it a go. If it’s rubbish, say so afterwards. But give it a chance in it’s London home with it’s London cast.

Do people only know Katherine McPhee from Smash or are they too young to remember she came second on American Idol?

It was season 5 and it used to be on ITV2, back when it attracted millions of viewers (in the US at least) She should have won.

I know her not only from American Idol and Smash but also Scorpion. I have nothing against her at all and have not seen her in the role. I quite like her in everything i know her for.
My disappointment stands that it's not one of our own talented ladies but the backlash against it being her seems a little extreme. Especially when a lot of these people haven't actually even seen her in the role . Also there seems some weird thing of some people not taking to this casting simply because they didn't like her character in Smash and that's just kinda weird.
With casting doubts personally i always go back to Matt Henry in Kinky Boots. I felt so disappointed in that casting at the time and didn't expect much from him then he ended up being brilliant and really surprising me.

Haha, it really is beginning to sound like the Brexit Britain rhetoric of "British workers for British jobs".
Yes, there are many actresses who could play the role. Personally I think Samantha Barks would make a great Jenna - but as she's just created the lead role in a new musical on Broadway, she's currently unavailable. Another name that was put forward and supported by many here was Siobhan Dillon. This is the same Siobhan Dillon who is currently living in LA, pursuing a career there, having recently played Betty Schaefer in the revival of Sunset Boulevard on Broadway.
I think the only valid arguement here is from people who saw Katharine McPhee on Broadway and didn't like her in the role, so were hoping to see somebody new as Jenna in London. Or that simply don't like her as a singer/actress. But that's always going to happen with any casting decision.

Hahaha, I don't see why people have an issue with her being American. As many have said, there are a fair amount of Brits currently working on Broadway and we have a fair few Americans working in the West End, there is nothing new there.
I do however have an issue with her lack of acting abilities, so considering that this was a show I wasn't particularly looking forward to anyway after having seen it on Broadway, the only thing that would have convinced me to see it here would be an amazing Jenna and for me, she won't be that as just good vocals do not cut it for me. If someone tells me after she starts that she suddenly is a much better actress than she used to be, I might go but until then I'll spend my money elsewhere.

She should. Though my dirty confession of the day is I once saw Taylor Hicks in concert...he was quite good.

No, we get Natalie McQueen... and those other people. Oi! Amber Davies wore a bikini on 'Love Island' and Louise lost 'Strictly Come Dancing'. Show some respect! Natalie McQueen is a very good performer and it's great she has got a major role. Louise was okay in Cabaret and I'm a fan from back in the day. I'm not sure what shows Amber has done or if she is a trained singer and dancer. I'd imagine Ms Parton would likely want some quality control over her show.

I'd like to know the rest of the casting too - hopefully some deserving and talented UK based performers will get good roles in the show.

Classic! lol I remember the first Clay Aiken cd being quite melodic but that’s because it was mostly written by robots in Sweden and just sounded like Westlife should have sung it. But it was 2nd hand of off ebay.....not a trip to America specifically to see an innappropriately old man singing country like what Emi did. 😂
