Joe is very good. He has worked a lot for this and it shows, especially in his acting/movement. His Never Getting Rid of Me is not the best but I think once he settles in it will be fine, but his ILYLAT is REALLY good. The audience laughed loads and I don't think it's because they're all his superfans. I was positively surprised. The new Earl is also really good, a different approach compared to Peter's but it works well and he has a nice voice. Also the new Old Joe is a very good actor and his TIFAOM is really emotional.

I saw the matinee of this yesterday. I had previously seen it a few months ago, back when Catherine McPhee was in the role of Jenna, and spurred on by seeing WEL, I'd been wanting to go back and see Lucie Jones. The casting of Joe Sugg, who I grew to like watching Strictly last year 'sealed the deal' as it were. {Spoiler - click to view}I still have the same issues that I have with certain parts of the script, but Lucie's portrayal manages to deal with most of these, and make Jenna's plight seem much more believable as something she can't just walk away from. I also found the affair with the Doctor to be played better - it felt much more like she was struggling with that initially, than just diving straight in. I also believed her baking skills much more! Overall, I felt her performance was just astounding, and it's made me much more favourable towards the show as a whole. Joe Sugg has come in for a fair amount of criticism, but this is a small comedy role, that is practically marked out as 'the role to be "celebrity cast" by someone without any theatre experience'. As I watch his vlogs and social media, I know that he went to see the show before he auditioned for the role, has been in rehearsals for several weeks, and has been taking singing lessons for many months. His audition was filmed (by the producers), and it seems like the US Producers / Creatives approved his casting. I felt he was very good. In his first song there were some higher notes that he struggled to hit perfectly, but it was his third show, and he'll get better at this once his voice is used to the demands of this kind of work. His accent work was fine - it held all the way through, and I truly believed in his acting. Also, it turns out his comedy timing is spot on - Ogie has two especially funny lines, {Spoiler - click to view}one about his spleen/a horse's spleen, and one at the start of Act Two; 'The British are coming'. I felt he absolutely nailed the delivery of both of these. They also have him do stuff with the child actor playing Lulu at the end - which he was very good at.
It should be borne in mind that this appearance by him is almost certainly a form of 'on the job training' before he goes on his 'variety' tour with Dianne next year, and to that end you can see that it's a nice little confidence booster for him, that also gets him used to how fully scripted theatre works. I'm also aware that his fans have come in for some criticism. I watched this from the Dress Circle, and no-one was whooping and hollering for him, no-one left early to try to Stage Door, and almost the entire audience was in fact very well behaved. I went around to the Stage Door afterwards, and there was a very respectful, very quiet queue, and certainly no-one was trying to walk in through the Stage Door (a criticism that has been genuinely levelled at Joe's fans!). Joe came out and started working his way down the queue, talking to everyone who'd waited. I was on the far side of the street, but he seemed to be lovely, and again, as he got to them, his fans were obviously excited, but polite and willing to wait their turn to meet him. I'm honestly annoyed by some of the criticism his fans get - shouldn't an expansion of the theatre audience be encouraged? I know full well that having booked for this, whoever they got tickets from will send mailers to try to encourage visits to other shows, and who knows what interest and enthusiasm this show might spark in someone? And as ever of course, the sole bad behaviour I did experience yesterday was from an older person behind me who muttered through the first number! Seat - I had booked for Upper Circle, L34, which seemed acceptable from SeatPlan/TheatreMonkey. I fully admit that I was once again playing the Great Matinee Ticket Gamble, and was slightly betting on many of Joe's fans being in school/college/having to make a trip to London on the weekend, and was hoping to get bumped up. I did indeed get bumped - to M31 in the Dress Circle, and the Upper Circle was closed entirely. The Dress Circle was, at a guess, 85%+ full. This seat itself was fine, but the legroom didn't allow for much comfort, and if you'd been taller than me (5 foot 5), then you'd start to struggle. Luckily however there was no-one to the side of me, so I could stretch that way. I have no idea what was happening down in the stalls.

Marisha’s “opening up” for Todrick Hall on his Europe tour dates as mentioned on another thread so will miss around a week of performances in early October. Hopefully a chance for me to catch Kelly as Becky!🤞🏻
She has a second announcement coming too though and an audition today so maybe she’ll be leaving Waitress by the end of the year.

Interested to know what Marisha has been auditioning for! I’d love her to stay here in the west end cos I think she’s fab, but if Dreamgirls does end up back on broadway I’d love to see her cast as Effie 😍

Also seems like Waitress invited a bunch of influencers to the show last night, judging by its insta stories ... I mean I’m assuming they’re influencers because I think I’ve only heard of about 2 of them! 😆🤷🏻♀️ I wonder how the show is doing sales wise with the addition of joe ... there’s still plenty of tickets available on the day for shows, and going forward, so I don’t think he’s had the effect that say Colleen did on broadway, although I’m sure he’s helped!

A return visit for us last night and we had great fun. I enjoyed it more than the first time I'd seen it, which was back during previews. It also seemed much funnier than last time, although that might just be my memory.
Lucie Jones was fabulous and it was great to see Marisha Wallace, Laura Baldwin and David Hunter fully settled into their roles. Tamlyn Henderson made a much more menacing Earl I thought and I can only echo what peple have said upthread, Joe Sugg did very well. He was comically awkward and kept his accent throughout. He's not a fantastic singer, but he's better than Jack McBrayer was and we were impressed by him.
We were in the Dress Circle which did have some gaps in the seating (although that did let us move further down the row to escape the tall guy in front of us who kept moving throuout the first half) but it seemed to be mostly full. A fairly well behaved audience which was nice to see. A young girl and her mother in front of us seemed to only be there to see Joe, as she was practually asleep before he came on, and then she actually started paying attention.

Saw the matinee today. 1st time and thought it was a wonderfully funny and heartwarming show. Found Joe mediocre, and lots of bum notes... I was thankful his character wasn’t given anything more to do. Lucie was fantastic and had goosebumps when she did her big number. Can’t wait to go back... when does Joe finish or when is he on holiday?

Stephen Leask has been tweeting about having 9 weeks left at Waitress which puts his last show as the 23rd of November, I’d assume Kelly Agbowu will be leaving then too to start Les Mis. I wonder if anyone else is leaving? I get the feeling Marisha seems to be trying to pursue the singing side of things a bit more recently so I wonder if she might be leaving soon to record an album, tour etc. I guess the 23rd could well be Joe Sugg’s last show too unless he extends.

I was told Joe's contract is up on the 30th November but it could very likely be the 23rd if that's the next big cast change.

I'm London and seeing it later. Just been round to stage door to see how crazy it was. Quite a large line of young girls but it doesn't seem like Joe is coming out so think they are going to be disappointed!

Just come out of the show. This is a time I enjoyed my second visit more than the first. I just liked it more and thought it was better. I feel like I connected a lot more with Lucies Jenna and she brings a bit more to the role and her singing is brilliant, especially in her big number. I really enjoyed Joe on the role of Ogie, it's true he's not much of a singer but I couldn't fault his acting, he was quite strong. Though I have to say not as funny for me as Jack. I thought that David Hunter gave a brilliant comedic performance and I liked him again but my original complaint still stands that his accent is all over the place and rarely sounds American.
I think this is Lucies show though, she is a star and its about time she got a leading role like this in the West end.
I think there were a lot of Joe fans in tonight but all were very well behaved and no complaints there. Bloody hot in there though.

There seems to be a rumour circulating on Twitter that Lucie will be leaving alongside Joe at the end of November. Stephen Leask will then be leaving on the 23rd November, with Joe going the week after, and possibly Lucie.

I think it’s very unlikey for Lucie to leave so soon when this is her first proper leading West End role and she seems to be enjoying it so much. The rumour doesn’t seem to have any sources, it’s just people randomly tweeting like “I have a hunch”. The only reason I could see for Lucie leaving would be if they’ve got some big name to come in to do a Jenna stint.

^Yes,sounds like conjecture unless Lucie has been offered something arriving early in the new year in the WE and has to launch into rehearsals...

I assume this means that she got whatever job she was auditioning for. Interesting to see what it will be... I hope she gets an Olivier nomination for Becky because she has been really great in this role.
