And Wicked are useless with extended contracts! I’m all for giving actors work, but come on.. even the Wicked stans/ fans know that the best witches are the new faces. My other massive gripe is that Wicked UK is overly British and desperately needs the American tweaks that they have over there. (Edit, should’ve read the rest of the thread before commenting oops… I’m happy to direct if the show needs me ! Is McCabe still involved?)

The show looks like it’s stuck in 2006 visually it’s not impressive anymore

As the later half of the year is nearing and I was actually thinking the other day, who do you think will over take Alexia and Lucy? I could see Lucy staying for one more year but Alexia I feel is on her way out.

Wonder if the tour cast will take over?
Would be nice for some fresh faces but also they need consistency.
With the film coming out the show is pretty secure so they could have some 'safe' casting. Hopefully they don't fall on the stunt casting Fiyero again to boost sales.

Same with Elphaba. Alexia is great but plays it so safe. I would love Lucy to stay on for another year but I don't think that will happen. Wicked needs new people in the roles.

Hi what age is the minimum for this play? How much is the average weekday mid day cost?

I’m ready for some new blood full stop.
Lucy is fine but it’s a very weak Elphaba and Fiyero currently.

Casting websites are asking for new talent across the cast list, including leads, so I have ^some^ hope. I’m yet to ask ,but I’m debating on whether or not they’ll bump another standby /cover up to lead?

It’s all a bit depressing really isn’t it? It’s like the producers are just letting it run itself in in London without any adequate creative supervision. That’s nonsense of course but why does it feel like that? What’s it like on Broadway? Equally neglected? I suspect not. As much as it could massively do with an overhaul of the staging, given that’s NOT going to happen they could breathe new life into it with the cast and sorting out the sound issues and generating some vibe. Also, isnt it high time this went into a smaller theatre? Surely the question of what would replace it at the AV isn’t a reason to keep this on there, is it? Are they relying on the film to revive Wicked’s fortunes?
This thread used to be continually at the top of the Musicals page with so many posts and interesting views, not to mention a fair bit of controversy. Now it’s in the doldrums.

Sadly it's likely they're just chugging along until the film and then they get another few years from that alone, then some stunt casting to probably extend it a little more - then maybe a re-imagined version in a few years using songs from the film and new visuals, perhaps in a smaller theatre? Who knows! But I think they'll keep it going for a while yet.

The saddest thing is that we were all so excited for Lucie Jones to join as she was exactly what everyone had been wishing for for years - fresh blood, exciting casting, someone with a bit of a name in West End circles - and then she could barely turn up for work!! And that seems to have trickled down to the following cast with Alexia now seeming to be off a lot too. I despair!

I think a lot of the problem lies in the direction, or lack thereof. The London production has been a museum piece for years, and casting that could have been exciting has been allowed to sink into identikit performances and going through the motions.

I can’t but wonder how many individuals are involved in making this show happen every night, on stage and off stage. I’m sure 90% of them are massively committed so it must be very dispiriting to hear that the product is so sub par. The people in charge are doing them a disservice as much as the paying audience.

When I saw it last year with the family it was incredibly dull and I vowed not to watch it again. Lacks humanity and visible energy these days, though I'm sure the cast are doing their best. Needs new direction or some kind of revamp desparately because as danb says, it's like going to the Wicked museum rather than seeing Wicked. When you go, you feel like you're years late to the hype and it's all blown over, and that's not the mood you should be going home with. Very much seems to exist without much help but somehow draws people in... because it's basically sustained by tourists. They should do a noughties Best Musical throwback and stage Avenue Q in that massive place

Lets move Wicked to the Dominion and rebuild Starlight Express in AV. Its a shame as Wicked was my first end show in 2008 and I have loved it ever since but they need some new talent. I wish Lucie Jones had stayed on for another year. She needs a redemption run as she was great.

On Broadway it rarely grosses under $2,000,000 per week. The show is taken care of, well directed and supervised, and only the best of the best are cast (usually with a “trial” run on the US Tour). The 23 piece orchestra sounds divine. All of the recent leading ladies and her standbys have put their own spin, but also been terrific. Some of them have slightly struggled with attendance but nowhere near a Lucie Jones level. It does help that the standbys go go on on a more regular basis. When I saw it, the cast was giving 200%, the acting was beautiful, the pacing was smooth, the vocals were perfect. The quintessential Broadway experience.
Then, when I see footage of the current UK tour doing Defying Gravity at 500% speed with three Elphabas who can sing “pretty” but cannot act the song; or go see the latest West End Cast and realise its leading man cannot sing… and all I want is Wicked gone from the UK. It’s so poorly directed, losing its magic. Much like Chicago, the resident UK team cannot take care of the product. Frankly, the only show that I think isn’t getting “stale” in the UK is Les Mis. Even Mamma Mia felt overdone the last time I went.

Shows need a tireless cheerleader to look after them & their legacy, like Cameron and Les Mis. I have seen LM many times and only once has it felt ‘phoned in’ (towards the end of its Palace years). It’s felt a bit ‘speedy’ at times, but never with jarringly duff performances that take you out of the show or with no attention to detail (eg the sound).
How long have folks moaned about the terrible sound system in the AV? The massive black-spots all over the auditorium where the sound muddies? If a tour can recalibrate itself at every tour stop and still manage to sound great, why isn’t there someone doing the same at the AV? Because nobody seems to care.
It’s made its money back, so they’re happy to be empty in the week and busy at weekends. It pays for itself. But its balls to the audience who might not want to sit in an atmosphere-free wasteland of empty seats!

Makes one wonder what Stephen Schwartz thinks about it. He’s pretty hands on with his shows, can’t keep him away from them a lot of the time. Doesn’t he ever check in on his cash cow?

It would be interesting to hear what he really thinks, and not the Hollywood answer. Probably too focused on the films now anyway to care, if it's running and making money that's what they want..!

Schwartz has been to both US productions for touch ups within the past year, and was actively participating in rehearsals for both the US Tour and Broadway companies back in 2021. The US tour even just got an entirely new lighting plot a in July (interestingly, to match London). A shame that the same care is not being put towards the show over here. Alexia is easily one of the best to ever play the role, and it was not enough to redeem the shortcomings of production as a whole.
