Michelle Pentecost is on as emergency s/b Elphaba for both shows today. Due to ensemble shortages, Laura Emmitt is doing a double track, so they brought Michelle back in case Emma went off ill today. Anyone can provide some insight on how that works? Is there a list of former Elphabas they call one at a time until they find someone who is available and Michelle was the first to actually be? Are former Elphabas still familiar with all the dialogue and the songs and dance moves (not that Elphaba has to dance that much, just in general)? Michelle was "only" an understudy, so she didn't even perform that often and it must be even harder for her. I would have thought they'd preferably ask standby or even main Elphies back in such cases. Also, are the costumes still in storage, or do they take one that's currently available and fits the best? Lastly, is Natalie M off sick, or also on vacation?

Well I guess they work through a list in order of time?
When we had an Elphie shortage a while ago we have Jackie Hughes stood by pretty much straight from tour then Jemma Alexander was in when Jackie was unavailable - so guess Jackie/Jemma was most recent... Then Hayley Gallivan was back...
Now Michelle is back....
I take it the producers have the Elphie Alumni backstage and go in chronological order!? Must be easier for a Kerry/Ashleigh/Jackie to come in than a Jemma/Hayley after having more live shows!?
Mixes it up a bit though!

Revisited the show last night and thought the orchestrations didn't sound as full as they normally do. It sounded very similar to the thinner reduced tour orchestration. Have they reduced it?

Weird fact about this 9 show week is that Savannah has been given 2 shows off but Emma seemingly is doing all 9 shows (as Savannah's dates are on the website but Emma hasnt got a show off this week!
If Emma gets through all 9 shows will she be the first UK Elphie to do a 9 show week?

I wouldn't think she would manage through the 9 shows, she does seem to struggle a lot with the vocal demands of the role. I wouldn't be surprised if she had a show or two off.

Emma Hatton is scheduled to be off both Thursday shows this week (7th April, 2016) so no, she is only doing a 7 show week.

Natalie McQueen is on as Elphaba today while Helen Woolf makes her London Glinda debut for both shows. This is a scheduled day off for Emma but illness for Savannah! Hope she gets better soon

So we just need Lauren James Ray to get a Glinda show in the next few weeks and we will have done all four actresses for each role in the space of a month!?
Those brooms & bubbles are changing hands fast at the moment!

They would make a lot of money just doing a show where various people come on and perform the Defying Gravity sequence, take a bow, and let the next one do it again.

If they really were doing this (God, I hope they don't as it is so unimaginative), they should either choose Wizard and I or No Good Deed, which are much superior songs. Not that Defying Gravity is a bad song, but there are quite a few even stronger in the show, including What is this feeling.

Hello guys, I just wanted to discuss a matter about the show which a friend brought up to me, which I disagree on, but would like to hear other people's opinions. A friend of mine has said that he feels the song "One Short Day" and the scene itself is essentially pointless to the show and doesn't add anything to the story and is really just "filler". Now, I do admit it's not the most important song in the show but I don't think it's empty calories either, I feel that "One Short Day" is a kind of weird showcase for the Wizard and the Emerald City, saying "look how wonderful we are, look how perfect everything is here" and I feel come Act 2 when we contrast this to the citizens in "Thank Goodness" and "March of the Witch Hunters" it serves as an important reminder of who these people were, and who they are now and how the Wizard has such an influence over them. Aside from the story progression aspect, I actually love "One Short Day" for the fun and frolic of it all, the music is really upbeat and strong, the lighting is gorgeous and the ensemble costumes are to die for! So, what do you guys think?

I agree it is a valuable song in there in terms of showing oz in all its glory

Apart from the first time I saw it where I didn't really know what was going on I did think that, until I realised it was the part of me that knew that the climax of Act I was coming up. Once I realised that, I enjoyed it more and really - OK it doesn't advance the plot explicitly but it's a fantastic, energetic ensemble song. Plus there needs to be something there, you need to see Oz through Elphaba's eyes and all the hope and wonder that she had, not to mention the sowing of the seed that there are places in the world where she could possibly fit in or at least not be so visible in the wrong way. You need that contrast with when she feels the depth of the Wizard's betrayal.
She goes to Oz to find the wizard, but ultimately she finds herself, and the impetus for all of that is slap bang in the middle of One Short Day

I think it's necessary. Particularly if you see Wicked as sitting together with The Wizard of Oz. It's the Wicked equivalent of The Merry Old Land of Oz. But yes, I could lose Wizomania.

There's definitely a need for a "We are now in the Emerald City" song, and it would be strange not to have an ensemble song at around that point in the show, flicking through the songs list. Instead of the Wizomania bit it would've been nice if the witches did something that somewhat showed their friendship becoming more solid. Bearing in mind all the stuff that happens in the second act, I've always felt there isn't much after they 'make up' in Dancing Through Life to suggest that they actually were the best of friends. Popular is really all there is.
