I really wasn't impressed by her. She seemed affected and unnatural in both her vocals and her movements. My impression was that she had spent several months watching a vid of one of the West End Elphabas and had slavishly copied every vocal inflection, every physical mannerism and every facial expression.
It would have been interesting to see Beau sing as Beau instead of what we did see - an impression of an adult playing Elphaba.

After tonight's BGT can I wish Beau Dermott as Elphaba in a few years time?! I firstly had to Google what BGT actually stands for. Found the video finally on Youtube and watched it. I really wasn't impressed by her. She seemed affected and unnatural in both her vocals and her movements. This. Affected and unnatural were the words that immediately sprung to my mind (well, actually their German equivalents).

I just watched the clip and I have to say I was actually really impressed. Yes there's room for improvement in her vocals and movements but at the end of the day she's 12...it's obviously one of her favourite songs to sing and in my eyes, if she is basing her performance on an adult Elphaba's then what's the harm done? If watching the show/clips on YouTube has helped inspire her to get up on a stage and sing in front of a nation, then I think that's far more important than if her movements and phrasing are too similar to a professional West End performer.

She's 12!!!!!!!!!!!! Come on!!!!!!!! When you're 12 and obsessed with Wicked or MT in general then sitting and watching clips of your favourite performances and trying to emulate them is EXACTLY what you do!!!! She has an INCREDIBLE voice for a 12 year old. With some nurturing, she'll find her own voice (and then people will probably complain that they prefered her voice when she was 12 ) but to be at that stage at her age is pretty great. And fantastic to know that a whole new generation of MT crazies are just out there waiting to be found.

It's a shame some of the other kids from BGT have never gone down the musical theatre route, because some of them were fantastic. I know one of the original Fletcher's in The Bodyguard did BGT but they get some insane talent through their doors! I'm not trying to say she is bad at all, very much so she is good. She's just not my cup of tea.

Someone on the Innuendo and Outuendo forums said two current cast members are auditioning for standby Elphaba. I assume this is Natalie McQueen and Laura but I'm kind of hoping that Katie Rowley Jones may be going for it...she's been an Elphaba understudy before and would be nice to see her not as Nessarose! Thoughts?

I assume this is Natalie McQueen and Laura but I'm kind of hoping that Katie Rowley Jones may be going for it...she's been an Elphaba understudy before and would be nice to see her not as Nessarose! Thoughts? For an awful moment I thought u were gonna say auditioning for principle Elphaba ( standby is fine, just as long as we are blessed with a completely new principle Elphaba)

I hope Laura gets it because she is a really impressive Elphaba and totally deserves more shows.
I'm sorry to dash your dreams, but the sooner Katie gets out of this show the better. She is great as Nessa but is way too old to play that role anymore and just looks bored of it. From what I have heard of Elphaba, there is nothing particularly exciting about her portrayal in the songs either. I think she will want to leave at next cast change.

I'm still pissed they never had Marc McBride as full time Boq. He was my all time favourite Boq, I went twice in one week just to go back and see him.

Thoughts? I've never seen Katie as Elphaba and would be interested in seeing her take on the role, but I really think she's been with the show way too long and should have left two years ago. I've seen Natalie M a couple of times as Elphaba (when Natalie A was scheduled to be on but called in sick on short notice) and didn't particularly like her, so I do hope it's not her. As I've never seen Laura Emmitt go green but heard nothing but praises from you guys, I wouldn't object to her being bumped up to standby Elphaba. I'd evem fly over to London specifically to see her - as I'm doing right now to see Natalie A

She isn't basing her performance on someone, though - she's slavishly copying, to the point where it's completely unnatural and stilted. It made me feel uncomfortable, because it felt forced, which made me wonder about her reasons for auditioning. Unfortunately, TV talent shows bring the 'Mama Rose' types out of the woodwork, pushing their little darlings to audition. Hollie Steele is one example that springs to mind - clearly not comfortable and ended up having a melt-down during her BGT semi-final (which millions of viewers witnessed because it was on live TV) when she forgot the lyrics to her song. Why anyone would allow their child to audition for BGT is beyond me. I always think it's a case of fame-seeking parents or parents who indulge their child and are incapable of saying 'no'! I can think of far better ways of encouraging a love of performing - getting involved with school productions (many adult performers mention 'getting the bug' from doing drama classes at school and performing in school productions), actually going to the theatre to see productions, watching musicals on TV/film, and going down the stage school/college route.

I have to agree with Johartuk, at least on the second part. Performing with youth theatre groups if brilliantly fun, you feel part of a community, can give you a taste of what professional performing is like (not all groups, but some), and are designed around children. Plus they often offer lots of opportunities to get involved with/audition for professional experiences.
These talent show things are often scripted, the kids (and adults) are put under immense pressure and at the end of the day only one person can win.
I hate seeing kids going on these shows, getting idolised, getting used to the fame/treatment and then being heartbroken when they have to go home. Being voted out is a form of public humiliation which is horrible for anyone.
If your child is talented then there are plenty of ways to make sure they get training and exposure without making them/allowing them to appear on a national talent search show.
(People on a facebook theatre fanpage have been clamouring for her to be in Wicked 'when she's old enough', which is laughable because a) we don't know if wicked will be running in 12+ years, b) it insinuates that Wicked is the be all and end all of musicals. )
I think this girl is very talented which is wonderful, but I don't see the rush to find fame as a child singer. She should continue with training and try to find a legitimate route into musical theatre if that's what she wants to do.
