My family has decided that since this Christmas is my first in London they will make the trip from Glasgow. I am overjoyed and looking forward to it but I am faced with the dilemma of planning. I have already sorted us tickets for Snow White at the Palladium on Christmas Eve but have yet to sort Christmas dinner.
I would appreciate any suggestions of places that I will be able to book for dinner on the 25th. I'm really keen for somewhere with a great atmosphere and really nice food. I considered one of the many celebrity chef restaurants at hotels but think they might lack the atmosphere. Perhaps there is a posh gastropub that offers something special?
As I'm so new to the city I don't have the knowledge yet to choose somewhere. I'm really hoping somebody here can help!

Oh God, Christmas...
I was in a similar situation last year - my family doesn't really do Christmas and we thought it would be easier if they came to stay with me - and I've got to say, it wasn't as easy as I was expecting, though still better than being in the sticks.
If you google 'places to eat in London christmas day' or something similar, you should get a reasonable number of results. Most of the posh places are open, and most pubs are as well though you'll pay through the nose for a meal. Alternatives if you have transport (which there's none of on 25th itself) are China Town, which is open more or less as usual, or if it's not a Fri/Sat all the kosher restaurants in Golders Green will be open as usual - schwarma and hummus sounds pretty good to me...! I expect Brick Lane would be similarly open.
Worth remembering that on Boxing Day tubes and buses are running but the mainline trains aren't, which is less helpful if you're in a tube-deprived bit of South London.
London is packed with tourists over the Christmas period so everywhere is really busy and I found that the theatre choice wasn't great; most of the fringe places are closed and the West End is packed with really badly behaved audiences.
However Christmas Eve is lovely - there's a real sense of an enormous city shutting down for the one time in a year. We went to a matinee at the Bridge and then wandered through Borough Market for a drink and some food - it was incredibly peaceful.
Hope that helps!

It's last Christmas, but I think it will start to give you an idea of prices and who's open. Don't underestimate a hotel at Christmas. They will usually have gone all out with the decorations, which possibly means you don't have to. There's a lovely chapter in Tina Fey's autobiography about this. From the list, Duck and Waffle has great views which could be a lot of fun for people, but you're so high up you'd not really benefit if it's not a clear day.

Quick after-thought - Dennis Severs House in Spitalfields has a special Xmas day event, which I bet would be extremely festive if you can get there - worth keeping eye on the website for booking: dennissevershouse.co.uk/

Such great suggestions. I think we might be seeing more of this thread and if anyone has info on Xmas Theatre, feel free to post.

Don't forget the public transport issues (or lack of) on Christmas Day.
So, basically, there is NO public transport on Christmas Day so unless you want to for out double or even triple taxi fares you need to be where you want to be on Christmas Eve. Unless you live within walking distance nearby
