The live recording from the New York run isn’t complete is it? Hopefully we will get a complete recording for the Broadway run.

Was at the final performance and the second time, I have caught this.
Enjoyed the music, the story less so. Patrick Page is perfect in this, enjoyed Reeve Carney also, Andre de Shields and Amber Gray were also brilliant.
Strangely I can see this really struggling on Broadwa, just like the similar Lysistrata Jones did, whos box office was adysmal despite a rave by the New York Times, not a show the Mid-Town go for.
However this has a relative small cast, set and band, so could see this being re-cast and transferring to maybe the Piccadilly Theatre.
It is great that the National has taken this project on and presented it and hope they will do more of this in the future. This show fitted the troublesome Olivier like a glove. The Great Comets would also go In there brilliantly.
Time will tell.

lol didn't expect to cry at two separate points during this but I did, so there we go.
I thought the reasoning behind the most beautiful song being, "la la la la" was to convey that it was an ancient sound as old as the earth, that couldn't be put into words and could only be sung as a primal sound. Certainly Hades recognises it (he asks something angrily like, "how do you know that song?") - I thought it was implied that it is a sound of the gods and a man should not have knowledge of it?

What MrsCondomine said. I think it also helped in the NYTW production that Orpheus was played by Damon Daunno and tbh *anything* he sings sounds godly, sooo.....

Very excited for a (hopefully complete) cast recording. I love the concept album and live cast recording but neither contain all the songs. I also wasn't able to get used to all the changes to songs from the live recording to its current state so it'll be good to finally become accustomed to those.

Really, really loved this show. Proving to be a big hit on Broadway; the biggest box office of a show this season. Hope it fares well at the Tony's and gets back here.
It could work really well in the Gillian Lynne now I come to think of it!

Truly was a masterpiece I thought.

The show on Broadway is taking 1.1 million dollars per week. Average ticket price $160 and some full houses. I thought the show was a bit heavy. But good for them.

It could work really well in the Gillian Lynne now I come to think of it! It has the highest average ticket price, but both Ain't Too Proud and Tootsie are outgrossing it. Tootsie could certainly do with shifting a few more seats but I think Ain't Too a Proud is turning into a true hit.

That'd be Reeve Carney's performance. I really like the live recording and most the songs on the soundtrack but this version sounds off. Wait for Me sounds quite flat. Not only in terms of dynamic range but atmosphere.

This thread is about Hadestown, which many people here have seen in a previous itteration. Not Tootsie or another show you reckon is doing better.

I was actually directly responding to a point made that it’s the best box office of the season. This is after all, a DISCUSSION BOARD. Yes this is the Hadestown thread but what I posted was relevant to the discussion. For the record, I’ve not seen Tootsie or Ain’t Too Proud - I was just stating what I’d seen in the grosses

Someone stick an electrode up Reeve Carney, or something. What lamentable direction. He is an utterly boring distraction in this.

And somehow he continues to continuously get work. I hope this opens doors for him so that he can move on and gets replaced with someone better.

Have to agree the weakest link, in what is a formidable cast, is without a doubt Carney.
I think that's why I hated Orpheus so much!

RC is performing the role as he was asked to play it.

RC is performing the role as he was asked to play it. As I said, "lamentable direction". But also, why adapt the legendary story of Orpheus if you're going to mangle the titular character and diminish him into a feeble, melt of a character.

I have to agree that Reeve Carney was a weak link at the NT. However, I saw this on Broadway at the weekend and he was vastly improved.

What’s the likelihood of this returning to the National if the Tony’s land in their lap? Obviously I wouldn’t expect the same cast or production but I’m kicking myself for not going when it opened and would love to see it transfer again.
