So I've decided to start volunteering at a local theatre (Northampton), to try and get even more stageyness into my life 😁 I went to an information session with tour this morning, then back in a couple of weeks for a proper induction and then I'll start shadowing a proper person from May.
Any tips or advice from anyone who has done it, or currently doing it? Or any horror stories? 😁

I did it for 10 years and absolutely loved it. Just be polite, smile and be confident and you will walk it.
Plus you will have plenty of stories to tell your friends as the general public are very unpredictable.

Learn all the new ice cream flavours and be ready to offer advice

Make friends with the theatre ghost. All theatres have one and it's best to have them on your side.

I have been volunteer FOH at my local theatre for about three years now. Most people are lovely and it's great seeing all the shows. The worst thing is trying to enforce the bag policy. Some people become abusive and totally unreasonable, the best was when I was told by someone being particularly obnoxious that they paid my wages...err no!!!!

It may not be relevant, but from my experience of volunteering (admittedly not at a theatre) it’s essential to set boundaries , if they’re not already in place . I would imagine theatres have a set contract for volunteer workers , mine was (still is) for a charity , and I found myself often working 6 days a week .... the more you do, because you have a work ethic and you know things need doing , the more you are allowed to do, and the less other volunteers do. My fault, I should have set boundaries earlier, which I now do , and I no longer neglect my own family in the process of trying to do some good.
Like I say, may not be relevant in theatre volunteering, but worth a thought.
One of my fellow volunteers has a volunteer usher job at a local theatre and loves it , now that she no longer just gets Shakespeare all the time .... her words!
