With the news that The New London Theatre is to renamed the Gillian Lynne Theatre later this year and the Ambassadors becoming the Sondheim Theatre in the next couple of years, who else do you think deserves to have a theatre renamed or even named, this can be anyone who has made an impact on British theatre.
My choices would be Terence Rattigan or Tom Stoppard and I would choose either the Playhouse Theatre or Nimax's new theatre that's opening in a few years.

Well, OBVIOUSLY I was going to come in here all raring to demand more theatres be named after women, and I'm still of the mind that that should happen, but having checked a list of West End theatres, there aren't as many named after men as I'd initially assumed. I mean, most of the ones with feminine names are named unspecifically for the Queen, or in a roundabout way for Queen Victoria (assuming the area was named after the monarch), or there's the Duchess, but as far as I can tell, there are only five West End theatres named after male actors/creatives. Still, let's have a Caryl Churchill to begin with, and if The Mousetrap ever closes we can rename the St Martin's the Agatha Christie.  |

Any theatre where the boys are hot and the bar is stocked can be renamed 'The Ryan'.
Other than that, I'd never tire of entering The Tom Bateman. Whatever the production.

I prefer the far more esoteric (and exotic) names like the Comedy, Ambassadors, Globe and New London rather than a series of dull surnames.

I don't like the idea of renaming theatres. Part of that is that although it's seemingly fine to honour someone by naming a theatre after them you inevitably have the issue of "Don't like you any more" the next time it gets renamed. Also, I like the idea of a name persisting through the decades or centuries. Would Drury Lane have the same feeling if the theatre didn't have a name that goes back to when there was actually a country lane next to the convent garden?

Given the track record of The Phoenix's past productions, it could do with renaming in the hope that its reputation could rise out of the ashes.

It's not that I didn't get the joke, but I did go to double-check the punctuation and along the way discovered that the queen in question was in fact Queen Alexandra. The more you know! |

I prefer the far more esoteric (and exotic) names like the Comedy, Ambassadors, Globe and New London rather than a series of dull surnames. Me too. My favourite theatre name is the Crucible. It's fitting for the local area and the shape and feeling of the theatre, and it's timeless. I think if theatres are going to be renamed they definitely need to be named after people who are either dead or have had long and very established careers, so there's less chance of their reputation going downhill again later and the theatre needing another rename when they're no longer popular. |

I think it's all a ploy to confuse little old ladies.* I can't remember the names of half the theatres that have been there for my entire life. If they start to change them then there's really no hope.
*I might only actually be two out of three of these things.
However, if we are looking to rename theatrical establishments I would like to suggest that the Chocolate Factory be renamed:
Southwark Hackneyed Institute of Theatre (Home Of London Expressionism)

Such as renaming one of the National Theatres spaces “The Bennett Auditorium” or have a “Lloyd Webber Studio” somewhere. Perhaps rename Studio 2 at Trafalgar Studios after a new playwright.

I'm sure Alan Bennett will get a theatre renamed after him, I think the Lyttelton would be a good theatre to be renamed after him given most of his plays debuted there. |

There was a Priestley Theatre, but it's now called the Bradford Playhouse. I do agree, though. Perhaps the Studio within the Alhambra? |
