I managed to miss this thread last year. As someone said, it's kind of nice to see fans of NIN, Mogwai, MBV etc on here, albeit just 2 or 3. I admit I've generally assumed people's music tastes here consist of showtunes and nothing else. But I suppose there aren't usually music threads on here, at least not that I notice. All the same is it too much to hope anyone's willing to discuss School of Seven Bells, Goldfrapp, St Vincent, Magazine and King Crimson?! While Rodgers and Chic weren't really my thing I admire them and it'll be interesting to see his selection. Well this King Crimson fan (and some of the others mentioned) would be up for it. So which period for you? Early (ITCOTCK etc), Mid (Larks Tongues in Aspic etc.), later (Discipline etc) or latest (Thrak etc)? The amazing variety is one of their great draws but, if pushed, I’d have to go with mid period. Like music arriving from another planet at times. Fripp is a downright musical genius.

It never occurred to me I'd get to discuss Crimson on this board. Come, let us sit upon the grass and lace daisies into each other's hair. Let me get the potentially awkward bit done first: I've never much liked In The Court. Yes it's meant to be this great classic and I do get that but it leaves me a bit cold. The incendiary USA version of Schizoid is my limit. Like you I'm very fond of the Wetton-Bruford phase. But the 80s phase is probably my favourite. I've seen them a few times since they started touring again and the Glasgow and Edinburgh gigs in November were mindblowing. My heart sinks a bit when they launch into Epitaph or Moonchild though. My highlight was a sublime Indiscipline. I'll be at two of the 50th anniversary shows at the RAH in June.

Here's a fun thing: imagine YOU are curating Meltdown. The SBC is yours for - what is it, 10 days? What will your programme be?

Very much of its time the first album and a bit hippyish (blame Peter Sinfield for a fair bit of that, I think). One that I’ve always liked of the early albums is Lizard, if you have a surround setup then Lizard in six channel sound is a revelation, opening up the dense instrumentation amazingly. In fact, all of them in surround are great. Friends of yore were more into Led Zep, Hendrix, Tull, Genesis, Yes and so on (early teens, we diversified a lot later!) so any talk of KC was a curiosity at best. I’ve been dutifully collecting the mindblowingly complete box sets, which look to be completed for the 50th anniversary. An expensive year ahead!

Like Marwood, not exactly excited with Niles Rodgers curating this. All a bit Radio 2 for me. So unless he brings in Daft Punk, I probably won't be queuing up at the Southbank to get tickets as I did last year with Cureation25.

I'd rather pick a curator PJ Harvey seems an obvious choice and long overdue, Björk too. Ivo Watts-Russel would be my first choice, if he could be tempted out of retirement.

You do raise an interesting notion of who we'd like to see as curator. Not sure about Bjork but PJH would be intriguing. I'd also go for Alison Goldfrapp, Tina Weymouth, Peter Gabriel, Don Letts.

I could imagine booking a lot for a Tina Weymouth or Pete Gabriel week A lot of my dream bookings have either already played it or are currently dead..

A lot of my dream bookings have either already played it or are currently dead. Hahaha! Yes that's still putting the kibosh on my hopes for a Beatles reunion. In case it helps at all, my rule for curating would be acts must still be alive and reasonably likely to perform eg not retired 40 years ago, elderly and infirm. It doesn't matter if they've already performed at a previous one. I'm going to mull over my programme and put it up later this week.

I am enjoying ‘retirement’ as a euphemism for ‘nervous breakdown.’ Perhaps we could get what we want if Simon Raymonde curated instead?

The lineup has been announced and its all pretty uninspiring (well it is to me, anyway): Meltdown
Only thing there that caught the eye is Despacio but I'm not keen on paying £50 for a ticket , despite how 'intimate' they claim the venue is (not sure if I'd want a whole day/night of it either, went in the Despacio tent at All Points East last year for an hour or so and that was enough).

Nothing to get me jumping up and down with excitement - looks like a firm 'no' from Annie Lennox too.

I think its quite interesting and a couple of things appeal to me although I won't be queuing up for tickets on Monday.
I did notice that there's still a couple of days missing from the Royal Festival Hall schedule so could be something else announced later.

I booked for Despacio on the Friday night and decided to leave it that - I was kind of tempted by the Studio 54 night in the reception are of the QEH until I saw that was £50 too - James Lavelle played a DJ set in the same space last month and tickets were £12.50, so unless they are planning on someone riding a white horse across the dancefloor in homage to the original Studio 54, I don't know how they can justify that sort of pricing.

In the queue of Johnny Marr, on the assumption that he'll drag a load of other faces up on stage and make an evening of it

I just booked - there is still good availablity in the side block of the front stalls, and the rear stalls is pretty much all still available. Also no queue to speak of. So I would think you will be fine for public booking for this one. Limit of 4 tickets per person, tickets are £45 or £35.

Just looking at their site, there a few odd seats in the centre block of the front stalls, and quite a few left at the back of either side.

I'll give it another whirl tomorrow, they had a quite a few late returns last year so still got options.
The Cure are releasing a film of their Meltdown Show last year, quite looking forward to see that again.

God bless their dodgy queue software - managed to nip in early and nab a cheap side stall

Went to see Azekel supported by Miles From Kinshasa in the Purcell Room last night - all I knew of Azekel was his work with Massive Attack but I was impressed with both acts, I didn’t know any of the songs but it was just a charming way of spending a couple of hours - I was also impressed that Nile Rodgers made the effort to introduce Azekels act, I think this was the first show in over 10 years of attending Meltdown shows that the curator has made the effort to introduce an act.
