I like her a lot, I even bought her book (!) but I have felt a bit disenchanted with her lately. Partly there's a bit of a blindness to the fact she's had a lot of advantages in life to get her where she is that others don't-not that she hasn't worked hard but without the contacts she has few people have double book deals and the like by what 25? or that she struggles to see that being a child actor did give her some advantage/contacts/etc when going into the industry as an adult.
and with that the duality of the youtube audience has boostered her to where she is in some areas but there seems a little bit of ungratefulness/superiority creeping in?
I do think she's a fantastic performer and no doubt actually a lovely person. We all said things when we were 25 that in retrospect seem a bit stupid!

I wonder if a lot of this thread should belong in the Performers section. After all, Les Miserables doesn't revolve (geddit?) around her...

Frances Ruffelle... blew me away in the original Linzi Hateley anyone? Wonderful... Kaho Shimada on that precious symphonic recording... Meredith Braun... just beautiful... Lea Salonga, who can forget her?

I think some of you are being a little hard on Carrie. I've met her a couple of times at the stage door after midweek matinees. I wasn't waiting specifically for her, I hasten to add, but she came out while I was waiting to speak to someone else. On each occasion there was only a handful of people waiting for her, and she was absolutely charming with everyone - even an old codger like me. I've seen Les Mis countless times, and hadn't a clue who she was before she started in it, but she rapidly became one of my favourite Eponines.

But this is not how Carrie normally sings, because how can one concentrate with a camera in the room? Also, nice little song for your grandchildren, but isn't she just Eponine number 97 in the West End production? I'm sorry, her aura just screams "self-indulgence" and "insecurity" to me. Its hardly surprising if singers sing. The shame is more don't record things , and when the really good ones don't get preserved for posterity. Its also not undesirable that some of the top singers build themselves a fanbase. The alternative is people who can't sing, or act, from Corrie or the X factor taking roles because they are known and might draw in audiences, or people no one knows taking jobs and not attracting anyone much to see them. ALW spotted the need to build stars with his TV shows, but seemed to lose interest and drifted off into other projects. If some of the best people have created their own momentum, good for them. Like most roles, there are just not any old actor playing them - there are memorable performances, ones soon forgotten, and some best forgotten. Eponine is not only a major role in Les Mis - its the one that got the Tony for a reason - its crucial to the emtional impact of the show. . Its also the one that features most, alongside Valjean, in showcasing Les Mis. Its one they have been very careful casting strong performers for in London - because they have needed people to look good at presentations, anniversary shows, and televised shows, , and needed someone strong for the film. The show seems to know who is very good - thats why the people who have been kept on recently into a second or third year- which is rare - have been, and why it had someone ready when it needed someone to play the film role. Carrie is well up there with the best Eponines - indeed, if you watch the 30th anniversary video its pretty obvious why she was kept on - as they needed someone who could stand up well alongside Frances and the Fantines.

I'm sorry- I thought Carrie's acting was bland when I saw her. She has a great belt, but she sung over everyone in ensemble numbers very unpleasently her first year until finally instructed to tone it down.
Being asked to stay an extra contract is real indication of nothing, at least to me, in the WE production- off the top of my head- Liam Tamme was bored by the end of his first contract and it showed big time, yet he stayed for another contract of phoned in performances. And there are plenty of other examples of miscasts.
Frances won that Tony because she made a truly unique (book accurate) character out of Eponine, and deserved it. Few have been able to fill to those shoes, acting wise, I felt Carrie definitly didn't. Someone described as "Cosplaying and shouting" Eponine, and I have to agree.
BUt thats just my opinion- I am not attacking or meaning to offend you in anyway. Carrie just grinds me the wrong way- her whole attitude seems as though she fancies herself superior to everyone. I really can't think of actors who tease so much about having new jobs they can't talk about- its no new thing that actor can't name what their next project, but I can't recall this much teasing- and it's not the first time she's done it.
Sorry, rant over.

I saw the show a few months ago and she didn't even register. It was a Friday night so I assume she was on. Collectively the cast were all great but she didn't pull focus in any way, good or bad.
I totally admit I'm not really into this whole west end "personality" cult. When you lot are banging on about people I usually have to google them. It's about the show for me, not the individual performers.

On my way home from tonight's performance and I have a few thoughts.
It was so great to see Craig Mather and Danielle Hope back in the show - they were both even better than I hoped (I had quite high expectations for them tonight, I really loved their performances in the previous runs.)
I wasn't terribly pleased with Cosette's new dress, I was quite fond of the black one. The new dress is this hideous blue number (Zoe Doano posted a picture on twitter) - it has this awful lacy overskirt/apron that finished about 2/3rds down the dress.
Adam Pearce was absolutely incredible as Javert - I hope he becomes principal one day.
I have to say, everyone on the previous forum was right about how dreadful Phil Daniels was - I haven't seen a Thénardier that hammy since Matt Lucas!

The new Cosette dress is basically the same one from the tour/current Broadway production, isn't it?

Linzi Hateley was my first Eponine, back in 1986. She blew me away and I have been a huge fan ever since. But i prefer to keep my fandom away from any stage door! I had the OLCR long before I saw the show, playing it constantly. So when I actually got to see it onstage, I was shocked that 'At The End of The Day' wasn't the opening number!

Does the new dress come from the 25th anniversary production? Wonder if Cameron is incorporate some of the changes to the original London production via stealth?

The dress is similar to the tour one, mostly in colour. It's a lot more detailed than the tour one. It's the weird overskirt that really gets me - it just looks a bit unfinished

Ah, the lovely Linzi Hateley... I was lucky enough to see her in Just So at the Tricycle just after her Eponine too. Did you see that? I wonder how many others expected At The End Of The Day to be the first song in the show, having listened to the OLC recording over and over again before seeing it...? I know lots of kids who knew every word of Little People from listening to their parents' vinyl records, and when they were old enough to see the show discovered that the song had all but disappeared!

His 'stars' got the biggest applause of the night. I've never heard such powerful live male vocals before.

I used to love the fact that the first time we see adult Cosette, she is still wearing the black dress and bonnet which Valjean dressed her in, after her rescue, as if she is still in mourning for her mother.

Unfortunately I missed Linzi in Just So, as I wasnt living in London at the time, but I did see her in' The Rise and Fall of Little Voice' with Millie Martin in Basingstoke!
Linzi needs a new thread in the performers section... *goes off to start it*

Frances Ruffelle... blew me away in the original Linzi Hateley anyone? Wonderful... Kaho Shimada on that precious symphonic recording... Oh yes on all of those "lovely ladies" indeed. Of course, Linzi is still in the show, has been since the 80s. She plays "the scream" every night, as it is still hers that is used. This might be really stupid, but I always asked myself whether it was pre-recorded or a live scream every evening, haha! Why is it pre-recorded though? Oh, and another Q (might be a stupid one as well, haha) why are small cosette and eponine not present at curtain call? I mean they did make an appearance? And it's not like they're not allowed to be on stage anymore right? Gavroche also gets his applause

They recorded the scream to protect the actor's voice-screaming every night like that on top of singing presumably wouldn't do them much good.
The kids go home after they aren't needed any more, I guess because it's a long show and there's no need to keep them around for a curtain call? they all stay on their last night though.

Interestingly enough, I don't think this has ever been the case in the US. I can think of a few Eponines whose screams I wish had been recorded...

I used to love the fact that the first time we see adult Cosette, she is still wearing the black dress and bonnet which Valjean dressed her in, after her rescue, as if she is still in mourning for her mother. From In My Life/A Heart Full of Love through to Every Day. My friend wrote a great piece on tumblr about the importance of the black dress. I'm not entirely sure why they brought the new dress in now, though.
