One thing that the performance on The One Show has taught me, I really hate one of the girls costumes so much. And I haven't liked it since I first saw images of it. I need to work out which girl it is, as I don't know their individual names other than Natalie, Millie and Aimie.
EDIT: in reviewing pictures, it's whoever plays Aragon. Those shoulders are just too much, she stands out from the others for all the wrong reasons in my opinion. 😂😂

Why were Lucy and Toby only given a scant amount of time to talk about the concept of this musical on ‘The One Show’? Merton and Hislop were allowed to drone on for ages with their tired and tedious school-boy humour routine that was a drag ten years ago.The song performance didn’t then make much sense.A wasted opportunity!

I feel like they never do this show justice in public performances. I was considering seeing it last year, then saw the West End Live performance and thought it was dreadful so decided against it. Eventually grabbed one of the discounted tickets they did for January at the end of the last run, and absolutely loved the show.

Sounds like this show desperately needs a better PR.

Lucy and Toby seem to have had a busy week. A brief appearance on The One Show on Tuesday, 15-20 minute interview on Radio 2 on Wednesday, and then 10-15 minutes on Sky News yesterday morning.
Hopefully a few more interviews will be lined up this week after they nab best musical, outstanding achievement in music, and best actress in a supporting role in a musical this evening!

Sounds like this show desperately needs a better PR. I think they’ve had amazing PR! Lots of interviews and coverage. Agreed, the live performances have sometimes not represented the show accurately, but that’s the age-old issue of performance out of context; especially in a non-traditionally formatted show like Six. I guess they hope people will be interested enough to come and see for themselves. Although the Oliviers podcast implied the queens will be performing a medley at the awards. Maybe that will work better?

Don’t normally listen to recordings before I see a show- but Heart of Stone came on shuffle on my Spotify and oh my life, I got a lump in my throat, what a stunning song. This should be used for PR at least once, it’s beautiful.
Natalie Paris’ voice is something else. I saw Natalie perform in a group a the Shepherd and Dog, a restaurant just near me in Essex, just before six started its first run in the Arts. My friend is good pals with her family and so we went for dinner and to support them.
This girl is something else! Deffo catching this before CC after listening to it on repeat now!

If they win the best actress supporting role Olivier and beat out Patti, you might want to avoid this forum 😆 I’d love for the show to win some awards, it’s such a great story considering how the show came out!

A twitter sh*tstorm after a performance on early evening BBC is not good PR, no matter how many interviews and coverage they’ve had. I’m not critisising the show, i’m suggesting a way to make it more successful (before you all go for me.)

The problem with THE ONE SHOW was that the hosts gave too much free rein to Merton and Hislop to run riot and SIX got squeezed out.Really poor production timings and nothing the PR people could possibly influence on a live show. I have done some PR for am-dram companies in the past and you are often at the mercy of press, radio and tv because they are doing you a favour in many ways by publicising your work so you have to be careful not to alienate them.

LOVED the Olivier's performance- just shows how much better it works with a bit more time & context.

I am not knocking the show, I genuinely don’t understand the hype around this show, but I am willing to learn! I’ve only listened to the Olivier performance and it’s good, but I don’t understand it. Can anyone help out or recommend which songs to listen to from the album to get a better idea as to why there’s so much interest in the show? I would really appreciate it.

^ I think it’s a matter of taste rather than ‘learning’ to enjoy it. Maybe you just don’t like it as a show?
Personally, I enjoyed it when I saw it. It’s a fun, catchy, candy floss piece which is cleverly staged and well performed/ choreographed. At the same time, I think it’s a bit of a novelty/one trick pony and I wouldn’t watch it again.

After the disappointment of the One Show, their Olivier performance was excellent and advertised the show very well.

It's staged as though it were a live music gig, really the best way to appreciate it is to go and see it live. It's a brilliant, fun atmosphere that you then get back when you pay the score afterwards. I think this is why listening to it cold doesn't inspire people. As for understanding it, the plot is that the wives set out to tell their own stories; what happened when they were married to Henry XIII and in some cases what they did before and (if they lived) after. The songs at the start and end are ensemble pieces tying all the stories together, then throughout the show each wife has a solo number. To truly understand it, you need to know which historical figure is singing - again this is more easy visually. I haven't watched the Olivier performance yet, but I'm glad it seems to have gone down better.

The PR was unlikely to decide which number was performed though, they have to work with whatever "product" the client (producer) wishes to showcase.

I don’t think seeing a number like that out of context is the best advert for the show.
Those girls were robbed of their award however. Patti just played Patti. In a bad wig.

As soon as SOLT decided to nominate all six of them as the same entry for the same award even though they're playing six different characters, it was abundantly clear that they didn't consider any of them to be a serious contender for the award, so it was almost insulting of them to even bother. Now, if they were to bring back the Best Company Performance award (which they should, considering they had two bulk nominations this year, and have recently bulk nominated The Girls and Our Ladies Of Perpetual Succour) then that would have been worth tuning in for, because there would have been a genuine chance of them winning, even though they'd definitely have been up against The Lehman Trilogy and probably up against Come From Away too.

At least they've had some promotion out of being nominated.

True, but they would prepare them for TV performances as part of media training. Performing on stage and coming across well on TV need different skills.

This is super helpful, thank you so much for taking the time to reply, I’m definitely more intrigued now!

I think what really sold me on it, the first time I saw it, was how the girls are obviously having such a whale of a time! The cd gives you a touch of it, but there's so much humour and charm in the facial expressions and the dance moves and the asides in between songs. They really give it everything in the performance, and sell the whole thing so completely, that I think it's really hard not to be won over.
My favourite moment is just as Seymour finishes her big tearful ballad, belting out all those notes, with all that passion and emotion... and then walks to the side of the stage and whacks on a neon ruff and those comedy glasses and goes straight into Haus of Holbein.
