Sorry to see the premature death of Dmitri Hvorostovsky, aged only 55. I only had the luck to see him once in person, in last year's Eugene Onegin, which I think was his last full opera at the ROH. At least there are lots of recordings for us to continue to enjoy. Bryn Terfel must be devastated, having been friends and rivals since they both took part in Cardiff Singer of the World in 1989.

That’s sad news. He was not one of my favourite singers, especially when he insisted on appearing with his own white hair in all his stage roles, but he was a distinctive performer and he will be missed.
I once heard him do a concert of Russian songs from the First World War but although I was hoping for a few lively
marching songs like the Russian equivalent of ‘It’s a long way to Vladivostok’, every song was a mournful dirge about the loss of young lives and heartbroken mothers and wives — certainly the most depressing concert I have ever attended, but Hvorostovsky sang superbly!

1989 was my first visit to Cardiff Singer of the World, attending all five Rounds and the Final in St David's Hall. At the interval of the fifth round, having heard 23 of the 25 singers, the audience was completely divided as to who the finalists would be. Then we trooped back into the Hall to hear Bryn Terfel!!! Followed by Dmitri Hvorostovsky!!!

The only time I saw him live was in 2006 in the ROH's previous Eugene Onegin production. There he wore a brown wig in the first 2 acts & then appeared with his own hair in Act 3, which I thought was very effective. It was so sad to read the news of his death this morning, even though I suppose it wasn't entirely unexpected. |

Nice short tribute to him by Pappano before tonight's performance of Semiramide. "We won't see him perform again, but his voice is in these walls"

"We won't see him perform again, but his voice is in these walls" That’s a beautiful and appropriate tribute , so sad to say goodbye to Dmitri Hvorotovsky at such a young age . Forgive me changing the subject , did you attend Semiramide? I saw the live steam from Munich , and wondered how it comes across live? |
