Anyone watch this and what did we think?
I am a Sheridan fan but thought it was dreadful I'm afraid.

I totally agree.
I started off as a major Sheridan fan with 'Little Shop of Horrors', 'Legally Blonde', 'Mrs Biggs' and 'Cilla' but was not happy with 'Funny Girl' because despite what she said tonight about studying Fanny Brice, I thought she missed the point of Brice being a goofy comic in the Miranda Hart style although she sang the songs well.
But I didn't enjoy the songs tonight (nor did I enjoy 'My Man' on 'Strictly Come Dancing recently) and I was very much put off by the rather scatty real life Sheridan Smith she presented to Alexander Armstrong, so that doesn't leave much for me to like. In fact I rather got the impression that she needed a decent director tonight to sort out her make-up and dresses for a start before starting on her personality. On the strength of what I saw tonight I wouldn't now dream of going to see her concert tour.

Me too. It showed he to be, without a dramatic context, a pretty average singer.

The above posters have mentioned things I thought were "dreadful". I thought after posting that I should have qualified that really.
The show certainly needed better direction and staging - she did not seem sure if she was playing to the audience or the camera - an entirely different thing. Her styling did not suit TV - awful dresses and make up. At one point it looked like she could only open one eye as if a false eyelash had stuck down!
I suppose it must be flattering to be asked "to do an album" and an ITV special, but she is clearly an actress who can sing and in the context of a stage musical she is fabulous, and brings something special to straight drama both on TV and stage. However, stand alone concert singing is a different discipline.

Yes, wickedgrin, that is a balanced assessment of what we saw tonight but I can't help thinking she has done herself no favours and if that TV special was meant to promote the album and the tour then it may very well have the opposite effect.

As I said on the 'Sheridan' thread I enjoyed it- I agree the putting together of the programme was awful and perhaps a stylist could have had a quiet word because it was more stage/red carpet styling than TV...but they were also very 'her' so maybe that's what she wanted.
I really like her as a person, and the way she came over in the interviews- I thought she was sweet, and funny. She's not THE greatest singer in the world, she's a good musical actress so maybe that's where this kind of show falls down for some. But I still enjoyed it- she was still 'acting' her songs, and as much as I'm not enough a fan to fork out for her concert I'd say they'd be an enjoyable evening based on this.
I also liked her nod to 'going a bit crazy' in the song choice and acknowledging it in the show- yes it was a bit of a disaster at the time, but as she kept saying about her Dad 'you've got to have a laugh about it'

Personally I thought it was just lovely of her to do her bit for the hairspray industry in such a full-on way. I hope L'Oréal have got her a marvellous christmas present as thanks.

The whole show was terribly old fashioned and badly directed. The only song (surprisingly) that worked was her stripped down version of And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going, and even that reminded me of your spinster auntie weeping over her lost loves after one too many sherries on Christmas day. Just be grateful that Xander Armstrong didn't expect to do a duet with her!

I enjoyed the show a lot. Sheridan may not be the greatest singer in the world but she has something which endears her to the public. And when she reeled off her list of performances, I was reminded of just how great she was in Cilla, The Moorside, Mrs Biggs, Inside No. 9...I think she is a very special actor.
However, I couldn't help but finish the show worrying for her and hoping that she has a good team around her. She seems very vulnerable and crying during AIATY, emulating Marilyn etc. created an air of tragedy around the whole thing.

I thought it was all a bit of a mess. Sheridan's singing was patchy and her voice sounded harsh. She should also have sacked the stylist. The dresses were ill-fitting (the white dress was a wardrobe malfunction waiting to happen), and her hair was really unflattering. Her hair on the album cover pic looked far nicer (soft curls and worn down rather than scraped up). Also the tattoos - what was she thinking?
Sheridan is a talented actress (I'd like to have heard her talking about 'The Moorside') but her singing doesn't really work out of context.

Are the tattoos new btw? I don't remember seeing any in 'Funny Girl' (other than a small one on her wrist I think) and that was at the Menier so I think I'd have noticed.

I was on the front row of that last week of FG at The Palace and she wore a full body stocking. Right down to her wrists.

That ITV thing was the most ITV thing I've ever seen, at least they resisted having some D-List faces in the audience. As the credits rolled we had a mutual "Hope she's alright!" moment... |

Some of the songs worked and some of them didn't, and a little bit of Alexander Armstrong, who used to be funny, in Unctuous Showbusiness Personality mode goes a very, very long way indeed.
And having said that, there is something about Smith that is absolutely compelling, even when the show she's in doesn't quite work. There's an emotional transparency to her that probably isn't healthy, but which commands an audience's attention (mine too). She has a reasonably decent voice - although it was overstretched by 'Don't Rain On My Parade', just as it was at the Menier - and she's charming, funny, and immensely likeable, even when the production surrounding her is a gargantuan flaming monument to showbiz tackiness (I expect nothing less from ITV, and they delivered). It was awful television - really awful - but she survived the train-wreck (and the terrible hair and wardrobe choices) with her dignity more or less intact, which is far more than I can say for Mr. Armstrong.

Well the TV special doesn't seem to have done her any harm if ticket sales at the RAH are anything to go by.
I was just looking at the website to get an extra ticket for a friend and it is showing 9 seats in the arena, 3 seats in the stalls, no boxes and some availability in the circle. And its only November, so come April this will be sold out.

It's actually number 12 in the official midweek charts. This may drop when the official chart is announced on Friday as I would imagine most fans would have bought it straight away, although it could have the opposite effect after the tv show on Sunday.Will have to see how the tv show affected sales when the charts come out on Friday.

I had a bit of a listen to her album. She certainly makes 'My Man' sound like a rather jolly little romp.
I liked the orchestra on 'Mad About The Boy'.

She way exceeded my expectations. I never rated her before this (well, she's never been in any musicals that have interested me)
Really enjoyed her voice, personality and tattoos!

She had a whole shelf full when I went early Monday on the way to work, but I popped back in on the way back home and a fair few had gone. I think that special did her alot of favors. |

Well I’ve just caught up with this and I must say I really liked it! Not all the songs were to my taste, but there’s no getting away from the fact that Sheridan is a great performer, and for me ‘a performer’ is someone who is completely different on the stage from how they are otherwise. She’s certainly that! Even That Song was beautifully done, and made unique. And I suppose that’s what she is. The appearance- brash hair more suited to Corrie’s Beth in all honesty, and the tattoos- belie the fragile little girl I guess she is deep down, with all her insecurities worn on her sleeve. Some of the best things I’ve seen her do have shown her at her most vulnerable, as in Little Shop of Horrors and Flare Path. (The latter must rate as one of my favourite performances ever...) The concert tour isn’t really my thing, but I wish her well with it.
(Nice to see Strictly’s Hayley in the backing line-up too.)
