Miranda Hart is going to be, according to an ITV spokeswomen, the first ever woman to host the Royal Variety Performance entirely on her own. Pop music includes: The Killers, Louis Tomlinson, The Script, Paloma Faith and Seal Comedy includes: Jason Manford & Tom Allen Musicals includes: Kelsey Grammer and the cast of Big Fish, Annie (will that include Miranda? Not sure) and 42nd Street. There'll also be Ball & Boe, The Leading Ladies, BGT winner pianist Tokio Myers & Cirque du Soleil. It's at the London Palladium this year, being filmed on 24th November and will be on ITV in December. One to record and FF, I feel. I do that every year now. I got through last year's in about four and a half minutes. But that isn't my record!

The glory days of this are well and truly over Partly because there are few true "variety" stars left now. All gone to that great Palladium in the sky, alas. Or they're seeing out their days in the nursing home that is largely funded by the RVP. Have you ever seen Noel Coward's Waiting in the Wings? If not, I can thoroughly recommend it.

It can be entertaining. Remember when Charles and Camilla drove there and got caught up in a riot?

It can be entertaining. Remember when Charles and Camilla drove there and got caught up in a riot? Where Camilla was badly frightened when a mob of students attacked the car she was travelling in ? Not my idea of entertainment really, violence against women.

But there are some great variety acts doing the rounds. Brilliant young magicians and ventriloquists. Granted no where near as there used to be, but unfortunately those that are still around are not "telly names". But Nina Conti or Paul Zerdin would spread the variety. Don't start me on that Miranda woman who is hosting the show. Can't be doing with her at any price.

Not my idea of entertainment really, violence against women. Yes, that's the one. She was complicit as the driver arrogantly took the direct route through the protesters instead of avoiding them by choosing another route.

So your point is that violence against women CAN be entertaining in particular circumstances ? Got it.

Gosh. Who let Miranda 'sing'*? Nearly as bad as the script she had to clunk and barge her way through. Dire first 5 minutes.
*disguised by some over the top autotuning.

Add me to the list of people who don't get Miranda. But always good to see the cast of 42nd Street so at least the opening 20 minutes wasn't a complete waste of time.

42nd Street being fabulous as always. That and Big Fish were literally the only reasons I am watching.

Lasted five minutes after Masterchef and that how to take a bow bollocks was a new low for all concerned. Watching Shamed on C4 where young woman imprisons and takes revenge on her abuser. Will and Kate would empathize....

I've been out and recorded it. So thank god for fast forward. 42nd Street were a great opening act and it's downhill from there. Miranda is dire.

The advert in the break for bladder leak underwear could prove informative to theatreboard members heading off to long productions with no interval!

Another one fast forwarding Ms Hart. That opening was dreadful - at least, the bit I watched. I'm quite a way behind, but at this rate I'll soon be caught up!

I'm really enjoying it, best royal variety for years. Feels a bit different, slightly different format evolving the hosts bit more. Some of Mirandas jokes falling a bit flat but otherwise it's good. Also Good to see more of a mix of acts

Just when you thought the RVP could not get any worse....it did!
42nd St was fabulous and then it was ALL downhill.

42nd Street set the rest of the show up to fail, and rightly so. Doing performances like this, with numbers that amazing, will help them out massively box office wise. I could still see another year and a half/two years left for it if they continue to impress like that! Big Fish made me cry. Shocker.

42nd Street was the only decent bit of the show. Gone are the days when the RVS was something to look forward to.

I feel they were trying to get a younger audience by putting pop acts in But the younger audience are never going to watch this and the audience watching on tv have probably never heard of any of them. Gone are the days of the headline act closing the show and we got stuck with Ball,Boe and Hart doing give me sunshine. And as for those dire sketches and cameos between acts.......

Who decided to give Miranda a musical number? I hesitate to use the word sing!

It was a mixed one for me. 42nd Street should put ££££ in the box office, but didn't think Annie shone at all. Big Fish, well, it may make some curious, but just confirmed my own opinion of the show, really. Loved the Ethiopian Circus performers, thought Ovo was dull. Wish the Divas had chosen a better number. As for Miranda, I like her as a person, but... 💰 💴💵 🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑

When Ball and Boe singing a Morecambe and Wise song is the headline ...
42nd Street and Big Fish were fabulous though and the posh comic was quite funny.
Miranda was dreadful.
