I saw this with the wonderful Tracie Bennett in London but, of course, she is not a big enough name to star in a film version of the play

If you haven't seen it, she was excellent as one of the female leads Roxie Hart in the film of Chicago (I thought!). The film as a whole is brilliant really, and revitalised the 'movie musical'. Whether she can 'do a Judy' remains to be seen, but yes she has a voice!

They could always use Garland's real voice, like they did with Piaf in La Vie en Rose

I didn’t see her in Chicago. Judy Garland's voice happens to have been one of the greats. So I’m merely asking if she can bring the required magic to the part. You obviously think she can so I am quite satisfied with that now. Keep taking the tablets, BB.

Yeh but at the time when this is set her voice was racked with fags, booze and prescription painkillers. It’s probably more about the acting than the voice, but I still think Rene will kill it. I don’t think she’d take it on if there was any doubt because a bad performance in this could never be lived down.
I wonder what Zeta Jones is thinking, as she flogs her range of flowery bedspreads on QVC U.S.

I hope Goold knows what he's doing, she was dreadful in that terrible film version of Chicago and this is a much harder part.

Tracie Bennett would poke pins in Reenie's forehead if they wouldn't just simply bounce straight off again.

I wonder if Renee's voice would have the range for the songs, but Judy's voice wasn't what it was earlier in her career so having a slightly strained sound might be okay. ALW always said he saw Judy at Roundhouse circa 1968 and she couldn't quite hit some notes, this was inspiration for Don't Cry For Me Argentina setting.

If Rene should ever come across this board, I’m sure she’d be flattered that some think she’s well suited to singing the part of someone whose voice is “racked with fags, booze and prescription drugs” and “having a slightly strained sound”...!
If Catherine should ever come across this board, I reckon she’ll feel relieved she wasn’t even up for the part, and will continue to flog her bedspreads while the money keeps rolling in.

Chicago was fifteen years ago, when Renee's face was mobile. She was terrific then, but now ... late period Judy might have been boozy and fragile, but she still had energy and electricity: hard to portray with a frozen face.

Judy's voice circa 1969 would not have been what it was 20 years earlier but her face did move, so Rene may have an issue.
Wonder if Rene and Stockard went to same facility for their "look".

Judy's last performances were sad, I think.

A while ago on a visit to the Kings Cross Theatre for a matinee of In The Heights, I noticed that the square in front of St Martin’s College was fenced off. A film crew and extras were milling around. After the show I went back and Renée Zellweger was there filming for Bridget Jones's Baby.

Judy Davis in Me and My Shadows was amazing. I think they dubbed her over with JudyG's singing however the acting was flawless

I still think Judy! which was in the West End last summer, is one of the best pieces of theatre I have ever seen!
Would love to have it back.
Looking forward to Renee as Judy, although looks like the film will not include earlier parts of her life.
