So I wasn't too sure where to post this- under Musicals, General Chat under BFI or International- moderators, please feel free to move where appropriate.
So this afternoon I took the afternoon off work (the flexibility of working for Local Government) and went down the British Film Institute (BFI) and queued in the hope of purchasing a ticket for the Screen talk with Jake Gyllenhaal as part of the London Film Festival.
Despite turning up an hour early and having five people in front of me, luck was on my side as I got in.
What a humble, smart, articulate, friendly, witty and softy spoken man this was.
They discussed is career, forcing on his first role in Donnie Darko and how he used to go to auditions whilst at college and that he received encouragement and support from his parents until he actually got a role. And how his older sister and (believe it or not) Danny Kaye were who he looked up to.
He also discussed the audition process that he and Heath Ledger went through for over a month with Baz Lurman for Moulin Rouge- way before Brokeback Mountain- and completely unaware of each other, Brokeback Mountain (of course), a film called Prisoners and his most recent Stronger, which is screening as part of the festival.
He also spoke of his admiration of Heath Ledger, explaining how they remained life-long friends, and his admiration for the acting choices that Heath Ledger made- "so much braver than me" he said.
He also spoke of the process he got through to research his character.
Throw to questions from the audience and they pic me (Yay!) and I not only thanked him for doing that and explaining how as ex-pat Australian how nice it was to hear about this Moulin Rouge audition process and his (clear) affection for the now deceased Heath Ledger and I asked him the following "Given your recent outing on Broadway, is there any chance we'll see you singing on screen soon?"
His response was how much he loved performing on stage and that he would love to and is working towards trying to make a movie of this because of the brilliance of Sondheim.
WHAT?? Is this a Jake Gyllenhaal exclusive! Cause I think it is! A full on movie of Sunday in the Park with George! My favourite Sondheim musical.
Guess we'll have to wait and see.
Fingers crossed!
