And here it is as my new avatar – revealing my actual name as well. Is that allowed on this website? Yes. Up to you how far you take your personal security . Thanks theatremonkey but I have changed my avatar again now anyway and put away my Grammy nomination certificate as well as my pic with Dame Barbara. As discussed previously, I can't put jpegs into my posts because I don't use social media so if I want to illustrate something I have to use my avatar, but I hope members will be intrigued as to what all these images of tonyloco actually are, assuming they look at them!

Amber Rudd has just confused 'allegory' with 'analogy' on Andrew Marr Love from tmesis B. Mus. (Hons), cycling proficiency badge. Is this board full of secret wittertainees? (LTL, NTE, Hello to Jason)

I used to enjoy fencing but I found the duelling rules confusing. It turns out that whacking your opponent over the head with a 6-foot larchlap panel is a definite no-no.

And if we have to: Theatremonkey BA (Hons), certificate in fireworks handling safety (air class). Didnt think animals and fireworks mixed. As a pyrotechnician I am intrigued to know if youre being serious though

As a pyrotechnician I am intrigued to know if youre being serious though Partly. Before 'elf'n'safety and council greed combined to do us in, I used to assist regularly at large outdoor displays. After a couple of years, I did some training that allowed me to set up some aspects of the display. Harder than it looks, as you know, and very dangerous. Fair enough you are right about health and safety though. Its an absolute nightmare at times and I'm not convinced it helps in the way its intended to.

Also not really a gripe but in the same mould as the above, I just saw a retweet of an Ivanka Trump tweet with her holding a baby and with the caption, "Me with my newborn nephew on an otherwise brilliant day." Otherwise? Not too happy about the new nephew then?

(Reviving this thread because of a headline I've just seen.)
Describing something as a "fairytale" [blank]. So people were eaten by an ogre and someone put a curse on your firstborn, did they?

"He was sat in the stalls." "He was stood in the aisle."
Why? Did someone pick him up and put him there?
Where has this come from? I don't think we can blame the Americans or the Aussies for this one.

This psuedo passive has been around forever - blame it on the system I suppose. It's the way people are and were taught.

This irks me, too, and I cannot believe people were actually taught this usage; surely they have simply copied others who know no better?
The misuse of "myself" is equally painful.

More by luck than judgement, it seems I passed the Tibidabo test. Do I get a gold star, Miss?

Oi TallPaul , I have been relatively reticent on this thread, so shurrup! 🙊 Gold stars went out with the ark. Nowadays you get a lemon meringue pie flavour scratch'n'sniff smelly sticker and no sympathy when you come back crying 'cos you ate lost it....

Yes it's frequently used instead of 'me' - "Can you send it to myself..." Speaking of 'me' I never succeeded in convincing a former line manager that it's not always correct to say "(XYZ) and I..."

If in doubt, deconstruct and reconstruct. Is it "Ethel and me went to the cinema" or is it "Ethel and I went to the cinema"? Take Ethel out of the equation and see what you get. "Me went to the cinema" is nonsense, so it's "Ethel and I went to the cinema". Ridiculously, the deconstruct/reconstruct rule is something I had to work out for myself. You'd think it would be the first grammar-related thing they'd teach in schools, but nooo, they'd rather bog us down learning all the rules individually...

Exactly the approach I use to explain it, and no I don't recall being taught it either!

I'm fairly sure I was taught that approach, but I'm not certain.
One thing I do remember being taught, in a lesson that fell immediately after lunch time, was the difference between due to and owing to: Due to = Caused by, Owing to = Because of. Our teacher offered us the mnemonic "Dirty Crusts Of Bread", and after he said that someone in our class reinforced the mnemonic by pulling a couple of slices of bread out of his pocket. I've never forgotten that lesson, and I've always suspected the teacher set up the slices of bread thing in advance for exactly that reason.
