Excellent idea. I do think that some sort of quirky annual awards might prove to be an excellent way of raising the profile of the new board on an ongoing basis, and so bring in new members.
It could provide a great focal point for a whole raft of tweeting exposure, linked to our website. Tweeting ' New, TheatreBoard Awards, click on this website link to see list of nominees' etc would hopefully bring new people to the site.
Plus, announcements about the awards, asking for nominations, announcing the nominations, announcing the vote, and then the results and awarding the awards. We could even beat Chichester with our pre-announcement announcements.
All of which could be tweeted to all the usual theatre news outlets, bloggers and the nominees themselves. Providing the categories were not too derogatory I am sure some of the nominees (with their large twitter followings) could even be persuaded to re-tweet our posts. Maybe generate some new industry followers for our twitter account that way.
Lots of excellent, focused exposure.
I think we would need to gradually develop a list of people to tweet initially with some of these announcements (don't want to spam people). Until we get lots of twitter followers. Happy to help.
So, all we need to do is to think of categories...
I know I said not derogatory, but we really should have a 'theatrebored' award. Too good an opportunity to miss.

I like the idea but maybe it's best to start something like this next year when (hopefully) we will have a higher profile and a lot more members. It's one thing to have it be a small fun little thing for the members of the board but when you want to take this out of the board and make it a big thing in itself, then i feel we kind of need to have a profile and numbers bigger that currently otherwise it might seem a bit of a damp squib or be a bit embarrassing if/when nobody cares.

That's a good point.
I think that by the time we all discussed it, thought of categories, pitfalls etc etc, a start date of a year from our site launch might well be a good time to have these awards.
We could also make it quite small to start with, with only a few categories. We can frame it as just a 'small fun thing' like you say. And if it does gain us some attention, we can then gradually add in more categories.

Wasn't there a thread in *the Other Place* which suggested some categories for our own awards? Can't remember any offhand  but feel sure toilets were mentioned (not that we're obsessed or anything). I like 'theatrebored' very much, there would be hot competition! |

I love this idea! a quirky alternative and dare I say it fun awards is what theatre could do with. Plus the chance to discuss toilets in great detail is something too good for us all to miss.
I think aiming for a first anniversary type awards might work. And I'm up for helping out.

Definitely need an award for best / worst theatre toilets.
Maybe focussing on awards reflecting real theatregoers experience would be a good alternative to other awards?
Agree we should do this next year, suggest the "ceremony" is a week before the Whatsons***e awards

I think this is a good idea: best/worst toilets, outstanding canine performance, best performance in a really bad role, worse performance in a really good role, worst seat in the West End, most diligent ushers (and a special award for the hot usher at the Almeida), most misleading review, box office helpfulness beyond the call of duty, funniest theatreboard discussion of the year, etc.

My feeling here is that we shouldn't have negative awards for individuals or shows. It's one thing to cal out the worst toilets or worst theatre staff or whatver but worst show? worst performer? These types of things just seem mean spirited to me and i'd be uncomfortable us being associated with that kind of thing.

I was waiting for Almeida usher to make an appearance And I agree, we can have bitchy awards for buildings etc but not for performers. I like the idea of best job in a rubbish role though. |

Yes let's do it! And like the WOS Awards let's forget the most deserving people and award the most famous people who don't need any more publicity- but can get it anyway.
And then have Z list talent like KimberlyWalsh and PixieLott murder musical numbers in between awards!
I'll book the Palladium.

First one the springs to my mind is "Best Understudy Performance" - I've seen some brilliant ones at the RSC in the understudy run, as well as ones during the normal course of a run (most recently the understudy in The Homecoming for John Simm, who actually is ready to cover any of the 3 brothers).

I'm SO up for this - but I'd also like to put my hand in for maybe not having any 'Worst' anything categories. I think even down to 'Worst Toilets' (which I think the Union can't be beaten on), if TheatreBoard were to publicly tweet any theatre/person that they were the 'Worst' anything, it just won't come across well - you just can't tell how people are going to react. I think it's better to be cautious (especially if it's the inaugural awards!) and not pee anyone off just yet. If we can gauge a response and then start adding more cheekier awards in, people may respond better than a random tweet from a theatre discussion forum they may or may not have heard of telling them they're the worst at something. And, as andy614 mentioned on the previous page, I'm not sure whether people would want to be associated with a board that promotes negativity (even if it's completely non-serious) that may come across as bitchy, so it may in the end put people off joining rather than encourage them!
The Understudy idea is lovely and I think we can get away with 'Hottest Usher' and that wouldn't be seen as derogatory (one hopes!). MyTheatreMates have announced the shortlist of for their #AlsoRegonised Award and they have fun categories like 'Best Social Media Interaction', 'Best Show Trailer' and 'Best Show Poster' - I think those kind of categories are much better to start out with.
