I have a friend who lives just outside Manchester and after much raving from me about London theatre she bemoaned the fact that everything seems very expensive in Manchester so I wondered does anyone know if there are any websites/apps/deals for the city please? Theatremonkey do you have a cousin there or is there a today's tickets app for other than London?

First and foremost I'd get them to invest in an ATG card and then get in for the opening night offers for Palace and Opera House. I just got 4 tix for opening night of Crazy For You at the opera house for half price. The card pays for itself multiple times a year if you go a lot, and even more so if you go as a couple or group.
Secondly, register with manchestertheatres.com for their email updates. They will send offers across all Manchester and local area venues, including The Lowry and concerts at the Bridgewater Hall. It tends to be close to the run starting if they're not selling so well and is usually £10 off per seat or similar by using a code, but I've had offers for stalls seats at the B'water for £12 or £15.

+1 for the ATG card. Half price opening night is a win - for most shows. £5 off regular shows helps too.
Also recommend singing up to Show Film First. They literally give away tickets for shows (and cinema), not all too regularly, but often enough to make it worthwhile. They gave a way about 1/3rd of the Opera House seats for Bat out of Hell's opening night! (gutted I missed). But quite often these are last minute things to fill out numbers, so notice is only given the day before or on the day.

Cheap tickets sometimes show up on Travelzoo.
I have to admit, I rarely go to the Palace, Opera or Lowry these days as they are vastly overpriced (can't do midweek shows so the ATG card isn't much use). I just stick to the subsidised theatres.

Also, the Hope Mill productions usually come in at around £20 (£15 for previews) so shouldn't be overlooked (Pippin booking is open now).

The Lowry also have a membership scheme which costs £30 a year. You get 24 hours priority each week on ticket sales (and a week's priority before each season launch) and they're increasingly offering 2 for 1 deals for members for opening nights in the Lyric or Quays Theatre though it does vary from production to production. The Addams Family, Titanic and Matthew Bourne's Cinderella are some of the upcoming shows with 2 for 1 offers (no surprise that the ever-extortionate Elf is offer free). Members can also exchange tickets free of charge and get a 10% discount at The Lowry cafe, bars and Pier Eight restaurant.

First the main theatre in the Lowry is one of my favourite modern space in the country, wish we had a couple of theatres like it in London. However when I look at their listings occasionally, not much goes in there, producers seem to prefer the extra seats of the Palace? |

As well as the ATG and Lowry memberships schemes, and signing up to Manchestertheatres.com as already recommended. I'd suggest they try to attend the previews of main house shows at the Royal Exchange. They can be as cheap as half price. Home also does cheap previews, and the side Circle seats there are pretty much always £10.
