Musicals are SO FREQUENTLY based on other properties that I really don't see why it's worth getting salty about it, especially as Broadway musicals based on movies date back as far as 1958's Oh Captain!. On other poperties, yes. But recently it seems to be all movies. There aren't really that many musicals based on movies that I'd pay to see. Possibly Groundhog Day and maybe a cheap ticket to Ghost simply to see how they pull of the ghost thing on stage.

For example West Side Story was basically Romeo and Juliet, but it had its own contemporary message and turned Tony and Maria into cultural icons of their own. Today's movie adaptations just slap the movie onto the stage and shoehorn a few new songs in. When the movie had elements of dancing and/or singing, it can often work well: Billy Elliot for example really gained a new dimension with the live dancing on stage and expanding the background of the miner's strike or School of Rock with the incredibly live performances by the kiddies. When it's animated movies being adapted you can at least still wonder how things will transition onto a live stage, i.e. the flying carpet in Aladdin. But for example Ghost was terribly boring in my opinion, it was just 1:1 the movie including the famous movie scenes like t he pottery scene, with a bunch of mostly mediocre songs added to it. Don't get me started on the awful Rocky. I'm not per se against movie adaptations if they manage to add a new layer/dimension, but too many recently have just been uncreative and uninspired.

Well earlier on in the thread someone said it wasn't BTTF which to be fair, sounds legit, i would be surprised if Curve could get rights to do a movie adaptation of such a big name classic. Maybe we are looking at something not quite as instantly recognisable or obscure? It's defo an 80's film adaptation.

That's what I mean. My comment may have lacked nuance. I was mainly pointing to the current trend of copying the screenplay and just add a few songs here and there, which is incredibly boring if you've seen the movie.

This has already actually been done in Australia 5 years ago. I looked it up yesterday when I heard about it. You can see a trailer and some show clips on YouTube. I'm guessing this curve one will be a new production entirely but boy did it seem cheesy....

Sounds like it. Curve is my local, i support it, but i'm sorry to say this sounds potentially disastrous and not something they should be doing.

That quote seems to indicate it is just a jukebox of cherry picked 80s 'hits'. Not for me; we don't need another.

This is the issue with Curve, whilst i love it as my local and think they have put on some good shows, we have things like Guys & Dolls and Everybody's Talking About Jamie coming out of Sheffield Theatres, Gypsy and more coming out of Chicheste, all these shows coming out of Manchester now...meanwhile we have a jukebox version of An Officer and a Gentlemen, Grease and Legally Blonde revivals coming out of Curve. It frustrates me to no end. Of all the new musicals they could try, all the films they could adapt, all the ways they could do even this show...i can't with it. I'm disappointed.
To be fair though i did like Grease/Legally Blonde/Hairspray ect ect and i do think that the upcoming productions of SB and Scrooge are decent shows for them to have and i'm looking forward to them, also Adrian Mole has been a success in terms of getting a London run and i think it's a really good show they did well with and deserves that success , it's that kinda thing they need to be doing more of, not picking a random 80's film and throwing a load of random 80's songs in to make it a tacky sing along musical, which i think we all know it will probably end up as.
Let's hope i'm proven wrong.
