Call me a sceptic but the media lies, we only know what they want us to. Thanks. Yes I vaguely remember that. Can't stand Charlie Hunnam but I'm never going to see those movies so obviously didn't care haha. Yes that was about it. Instead it ended up being Creepy-Jamie-Dornan (so named for his The Fall character, I'm sure he's a lovely chap in real life)

The Daily Mail comments are as hilarious (and also deeply saddening if I think about it too much) as expected.

I wouldn't object to a shared companion role actually. Two characters who alternately join the Doctor on her travels, ocassionally sharing the TARDIS at the same time for the most epic stories.

Or conjoined twins. Of any gender.

I assume we'll have a male companion with a female Doctor

I bet Daily Mail readers are still getting over John Barrowman being gay.
If anyone is giving Emi abuse on Twitter then I think we should have her back. I may not share a lot of views with her but on this forum we all respect each other's views and should watch out for each other on other social media platforms.

I honestly didn't think I would be this happy but I'm just so thrilled!! I haven't seen Jodie Whittaker in anything but I'm sure she'll be great, Chris Chibnall wouldn't have picked her if not. I applaud the BBC and Chibnall for being brave enough to make this decision and can't wait to see what the future holds! I'm loving Colin Baker's tweets as well.

I've had two tweets personally already about how it's a travesty and the BBC will 'die' because of this. Definite upside is the fanboy outrage. I am LOVING the meltdowns. I do love the attitude of "Now {trivially unimportant change} has happened it's completely ruined!!!!! I will never watch it again!!!!1!!!!!" And it always amuses me that the people who claim that a show is ruined and they just don't care about it any more seem to spend hours every day making sure everyone knows just how much they don't care about it.

Not dissimilar to some posters on here and their indifferences to shows, despite repeatedly announcing it on the threads...

Why on earth does he think that a male Doctor is necessary for them to be a role model for young boys? When we get past the stage of only identifying with our own birth gender then we will have moved the human race forwards just a little. Also, I don't read stuff about ratings but isn't the whole of television seeing lower ratings as screen entertainment atomises? We are into a different world now, no longer do people even watch television much, more like catching up, streaming it much later and, naughty, naughty, downloading it through non official sources.

"There aren’t many places on television where boys can find a male hero who does not conform to all the usual, boring, violent, dumb male stereotypes. Now one of the few that did exist, the Doctor, has gone." I don't watch a huge amount of television, but is that first sentence true? I get the impression that that style of stereotype has fallen out of fashion, and repeats of old shows that relied on that type of characterisation now feel distinctly dated. Today there seems to be a far greater reliance on rounded characters with depth and complexity, for both men and women.

That's exactly how I felt when reading it. We need to teach boys to see women as role models too. I always have done.

as above... boys need positive, strong female role models too!
I'm really excited about Jodie as the Doctor, as a big Who fan, I think her casting represents a big exciting shift in the show that will excite and engage existing viewers and being a whole load of new viewers in.
The fandom can be amazing, but often a little toxic and scary. As someone who worked on Doctor Who for a year during Matt Smith's tenure I know only too well the brilliance of the fan base and also how terrifying it can sometimes be!
I'm sure her gender will be addressed on screen but in an ideal world it's mentioned once after the regen and then never again, really the writing of the Doctor should be the same no matter the gender. People have been talking about the possibility of a female Doctor since the Tom Baker era, it's brilliant that it's finally happening.
Oh and check out the films Adult Life Skills or Attack the Block for really great non Broadchurch performances from Jodie!

I fear the whole first series will be about coming to terms with the new body.
Let's hope they have some fun and suggest she was always a woman trapped in a male body, with a massive lesbian crush on Rose!

I always thought it was supposed to be Time Lords and Time Ladies, and erm, never the twain shall meet, but good luck to her, I think the only thing I've seen her in was Venus. Almost tempted to go into a Dr. Who forum to watch the meltdown in all its splendour.

What happened to Charlie Hunnam @tom89? He had a lot of negative reactions from fans when cast as Christian Grey in 50 shades and then conveniently dropped out for "unrelated reasons". Call me a sceptic but the media lies, we only know what they want us to. He's talked quite convincingly about dropping out for personal reasons, nothing to do with the response, he just needed a break. He has also noted that it doesn't seem to be a big deal when anyone *else* drops out of a project - it happens all the time. So I think you can chalk that theory up to the 'fans' thinking they have more influence than they really do.

I can remember back when Matt Smith was announced and how angry so many people were. Some people are so overly dramatic but social media gives them that platform to get attention. Its kinda sad really that fans of a show which celebrates change and diversity can't get behind this casting.
One of the comments I have seen a lot is "it won't be the same" -Well that's the whole point! It isn't meant to be the same. It would be totally boring if it was the same

Oh and do we not get on @hitster ? that's the first I'm hearing of it...well you live and learn sorry about that, I always like your posts and find you to be an interesting/nice person. Sorry that I'm not quite that for you, I do feel genuinely a bit sad about that.
Turns out the reason I was getting a LOT of attention on twitter was Digital Spy quoted my tweet...just under erm Rylan. Accolade indeed.

I'm absolutely overjoyed that they have chosen Jodie Whitaker for the role! I've lost track of the sheer number of years people have pleaded for TPTB to make the braver choice, when replacing the previous Doctors. Given the character is a (practically) immortal, shape-shifting alien, with an infinite range of faces and bodies to choose from when regenerating, the shift to a female form should be the least weird choice for The Doctor to make! I'm so looking forward to the new series, in a way that even the great castings of Tennant, Smith and Capaldi failed to ignite in me. All of them were great replacements, and I liked each of them enough as actors outside of their new role, that I knew the show would continue to be watchable. However, I had reasonable certainty, with each one, that the role wasn't ever going to move radically away from the 'norm' - especially with regards to the relationships the Doctor had with the assistants and people he met. This time,, after more than 50 years of this show, there are suddenly brand new possibilities, that were never there before. In a show that's run this long, surely that's a really good thing?! Honestly, the only thing that bothers me about Jodie (or, at least, from the promo they ran yesterday) is that the new Doctor's form somehow includes very obviously dyed blonde hair! I didn't know that was a possibility in a regeneration!!! After all, if the doctor can dye his form's natural hair colour during a regeneration, why has he not been ginger every time?!!

Still not Ginger is frankly the biggest problem I have with the regeneration And she MAY end up with different hair. We've seen before the 'launch' image and the actual show one being different so you never know...unless there is some inter-galactic reasoning on bleach?

Well Eleven did shave it all off, and Ten and Twelve had obvious restyles throughout their tenures, so I can't imagine why Thirteen can't colour it? A fun game for the viewers at home, watch David Tennant's magical hair disappear and reappear throughout some of his episodes!

The Doctor can base his new appearance on people he's met, as we saw with Peter Capaldi. Why couldn't her new appearance be based on someone with dyed hair met previously? Time Lords have two hearts and regenerate into new bodies, natural roots would be far from the oddest thing about their physiology.
