Jo has played well and went beyond her seeding position plus what chance would she have had against Serena.
I may be biassed as I'm a huge Serena fan and think she is one of the greatest Sportswomen ever.
Also have they shown any of the veteran invitationals yet as the old players are often fun to watch as they don't take it too seriously.

Must be the greatest, can only think of Flo-Jo and Jayne Torville that come anywhere close Personally I think the only women who come close to/equal Serena are Martina Navratilova and Billie Jean King. Maybe Dibaba and some of the other great athletics long distance runners are not far behind. I wouldn't put Jane Torvill in the same league, good though she undoubtedly was, and there has always been a cloud of suspicion over Flo-Jo even though she never failed a test. |

Martina and Serena are high up on my list. Billie-Jean did a lot to promote the women's game too. Names like Olga Korbutt, Larisa Latynina, Jackie Joyner-Kersee spring to mind too.
Serena's Grand Slams plus several Olympic Gold Medals and longevity would make her a top 3 lock on my list. But I'd need to consider carefully who I'd give top honour too.

Not too many names coming forward. Serena is the greatest female sportswoman.
(I did throw ice dancing in to be controversial/amusing though, I don't really have Torville at number 3)

One of the commentators was musing that sometime in the future we shall be able to judge who was the greatest out of Djokovic, Nadal and Federer by the actual results, the wins of titles. But is this the ultimate definition of the greatest sportsman? On the one hand, yes it is but what about length of career, quality of the opposition, war, illness, country of origin - all affect the game. What about influence and personality? Just having a little ‘muse’ myself....

Yes, but it was John Inverdale, so his opinion is entirely worthless.
I've been watching a lot of doubles on the red button, with zero commentary, which is lovely. I really enjoyed Malisse/Myrni v Delgado/Marray this morning (and how had I forgotten how beautiful Xavier Malisse is??) and yesterday my favourite ever thing, Old Mens Doubles featuring wonderful Mansour Bahrami.

Just having a little ‘muse’ myself.... That’s a good thinking point. I’d say no that the number of titles isn’t the definition of the greatest. To compare it to music - I wouldn’t say that the “best singer” is the person who has had the most number ones. It’s subjective and we all enjoy watching different players - some matches have been more enjoyable than others and some tougher than others, so does that make it a “better” win? |

Federer had won ten majors before Nadal got to three and before Djokovic got one. I don't think beating Roddick makes you the best ever. Losing record against Nadal and Djokovic. Yeah the three greatest players ever but Federer isn't the best.

Just having a little ‘muse’ myself.... If you at most lists of the greatest Sportsman ever then one name always comes out at the top or very near the top - Muhammad Ali. He was a brilliant boxer but most of his legend is about him being an iconic and the myth that he created. He is always top of my list so the influence and personality does play a large par in it. Also we have to consider who was the greatest at their peak compared to things like longevity and opposition. |

Congratulations to Simona Halep, Serena shows class in defeat as usual.
The argument about who is better out of Nadal, Federer and Djokovic will always rage on. Federer has the most grand slams, Nadal is the king of clay and Djokovic tops the all time money list.

Like many of the roles at Wimbledon, his is an honorary position. His 'commute' is probably slightly longer than most! |
