Sue Barker does less these days but I thought she'd said in the past that was her choice.
The afternoon/evening split that she and Clare Balding do is I think the same split Sue and Des Lyman used to do.

McEnroe was mildly amusing and different when the BBC first hired him but of all the ex players they use he's the one that follows the tour least and relies on a series of cliches and supposed straight talking to cover that up. He often makes basic errors when talking about people's careers but no one really bothers to correct him. Put him alongside someone who knows what they're talking about like Austin or Navratilova and he's embarrassing to listen to. The biggest waste of money in their entire salary bill. Inverdale is mainly ok but just goes down weird tangents sometimes and is best kept away from women's matches. Castle is actually unbearable and has got worse over the years. The BBC could really do with shaking their team up a bit more, the ones that get the high profile mens matches are all a bit too cosy with each other, it's like being stuck with a load of pub bores. At one point McEnroe was a breath of fresh air and now he's a stale fart. When Hewitt or Murray guested there was actual analysis happening and an complete understanding of the modern game. Realistically though as prize money has increased there's less incentive for the really top players to move into broadcasting after their career is over. Andy Roddick was fantastic too. I used to play a drinking game when I took a shot every time John McEnroe said ‘tentative.’ Luckily it was a shot of Robinson’s Barley Water otherwise I doubt I’d be here now. Agreed - I don't know if he has a regular gig with US TV or just pops up now and then but yes he's very good. Problem is the BBC group of former players is very 80's/early 90's heavy - McEnroe, Becker, Navratilova, Cash, Austin, Lloyd, Castle(if you can call him a player), Durie, Croft, Sam Smith. Now some of them are better and more knowledgeable than others, usually linked to whether they regularly commentate or just turn up for Wimbledon/the other slams but they are increasingly out of touch with the modern game. In the past the BBC has phased out older stars - the likes of Ann Jones & Virginia Wade have long gone even though they are still with us but the list of mid 90's onwards players is very short - Chanda Rubin (who's excellent), Davenport some years, Henman, Clijsters and well that's about it. But then the Becker/McEnroe level players of later decades don't seem as interested at hanging around the game as the older players do. It probably doesn't help that, since they understandably mostly hire people who have English as a first language, Britain & Australia weren't producing many top players over that period and even the US was having a bit of a lull outside a few big stars (Sampras, Agassi, the Williams) most of whom are unlikely to want to move into commentator roles.

Pam Shriver used to do Wimbledon on BBC but I think she is ESPN now. Tracey Austin has been on it for years as she stopped playing when she was very young.
Ginny Wade did the analysis for years and so did Anne Jones but either stepped down or were phased out.
With the BBC covering all courts they must be using a lot more commentators and co-commentators unless they just go with one commentator.
The likes of McEnroe also double up on US TV.
Ironically one of the commentators is Oliver Reed's brother Simon who has done tennis commentary for years. The thought of Ollie at Wimbledon would have been interesting.

Surprised Andy is playing with Serena. Must be tough as the M in the mixed couple where the F has a bigger serve than you

I think I have a kindred spirit in the person that gets to tell the crowds to be quiet.

Surprised Andy is playing with Serena. Must be tough as the M in the mixed couple where the F has a bigger serve than you I doubt he cares in the slightest - they are clearly both just doing it for a bit of fun! They are at the stage of their respective careers where they can basically do what they please, so the fact they are playing at all says a lot about how much both of them are simply enjoying playing. The Gauff match was excellent theatre - turned it on when she was on the brink of defeat and then was hooked until the end! I suspect Halep will beat her on Monday but she should get another outing on Centre Court at least for her efforts today. And she's playing mixed doubles tomorrow!

Watching the Darty Barty Party right now and I have to say Todd Woodbridge has been a revelation this year (to me).

I agree that Todd Woodbridge has been really good on the commentary (lovely accent too). Really enjoyable day of tennis today with the Nadal match, Jo Konta and now watching Dan Evans fight it out under the number 1 court roof.

I am also watching Dan Evans at the moment who is playing very well. It would be great to see him win and face Nadal in the next round. Jo Konta played a great match and lovely to see a Brit through to the 2nd week in the ladies draw

Despite the crummy commentary I’m enjoying this year’s Wimbles. Of course I have the time to get stuck in and follow the ‘stories’ but I think it is a bit more interesting this year. Maybe Gauf? One think: I’ve noticed they schedule Gauf and tonight Serena/Murray to fit the East Coast US telly schedules. Am I right? Or is it UK schedules too?

They do take requests from foreign broadcasters into account though the BBC usually want Murray on late as well.
In the mixed doubles case tonight it had to be late as Andy and Serena had already played a match today.

Gauff probably yes, but Murray and Williams scheduling was to take account of their other matches - the same thing was done for Barty as she also played doubles this evening after being first up on Centre for her singles. There were also a couple of people on outside courts who played one match first then came back onto the same court later in the day for a doubles match (or second doubles match), with one match scheduled in between to allow the players to rest.

He must have been so disappointed, I’ve never seen a player leave the court so quickly! Hopefully he can take away the positives and keep going with his climb up the rankings. It was interesting to hear during the commentary that he’d been invited by Roger Federer to train with him.

Coco did well to get as far as she did but the story had to end somewhere. She is going to be a huge star, luckily her tournament schedule is being managed so she doesn't burn out like a lot of other prospects have done so.
Apparently Meghantoinette requested people didn't take her photo when she was there the other day. Rumours that she had a meeting of Gold Diggers Inc with Serena's husband and KMPF5 were unconfirmed or that Mrs Trump attended by teleconference but the consensus amongst them all was that Kate Middleton outdid them all as she has nabbed a future King.

Konta, what a waste of space! Choker. Oh good grief, give the girl a break! She got to the quarter finals, which is a decent run. Sometimes the pressure does get too much, it could happen to anyone, and comments like yours are part of the problem!

Exactly! I think Jo did really well getting as far as she did. Tennis can only have one winner who lifts the trophy but that does not take away from the achievements or hard work of everyone who plays.

It's comments like that that make me dread Wimbledon as much as I love it.
Did she play her best, no but she is also one of only two players who's made at least the quarters of the last two slams and that's despite the fact she wasn't seeded to get that far in either.
