Georges Bizet's Carmen, adapted by Peter Brook, plays Wilton’s Music Hall. Blurb: "The youthful stars of the Royal Opera House's Jette Parker Young Artists Programme perform Peter Brook’s radical reworking of Georges Bizet’s opera in an intimate setting. " The Royal Opera House have half the allocation, which will be hard to get, as their Friends will buy it up. However, the Wilton’s Music Hall allocation, for the other side of the auditorium, just went on sale, and if you're interested, that is available now: www.wiltons.org.uk/whatson/358-la-trag-die-de-carmen

Thanks to the ROH discussion on this forum (and I'm a Friend and still missed out the allocation) I have now booked via Wilton's two stalls seats for the last night. I booked at 11 a.m., and at that stage, availability looked good and there was no queuing, etc.

Thanks for the heads up about this. Wilton's is quite local to us and having missed out on last year's ROH offering there I have booked for this.

I remember Brook's Carmen from when it was first performed in about 1983 - it was radical then, I wonder how it will look now in a re-heated version with no Brook.

I thought this was rather wonderful this evening - great cast - Francesca Chejina particularly impressive as Micaela.
My main issue was the interval - the whole piece is about 1h25, putting a 30 minute interval into it really breaks up the action, especially at somewhere like Wiltons where it takes time to get people in and out. Should have gone straight through.

We were there too and really enjoyed this. It certainly zipped along and I agree there was really no need for an interval - although my middle aged back was telling me something different! Francesca Chejina was magnificent - and displayed a really engaging personality at the curtain call. Would have been nice to see more younger people in the audience - I do hope that in the remaining performances there will be less grey hair (and I speak as a grey haired person). Every time I go to Wiltons I am struck - in the walk from Aldgate East station - by how much the night time economy around Leman Street has grown up in recent years. There are so many bars and, of course, the new Curzon cinema. I was born in Wapping and remember it being very different in the 70s!

I'm really looking forward to this and I'm going next week. I know it's sacrilegious to say so but I rarely enjoy Bizet's original that much, one of the main reasons being it drags a bit so a short running time has to be an advantage for me.

We are going next Friday. Its a production we saw when we were on holiday in Rome 30 years ago. Like tmesis I don't really care for the Opera - I spend my time wanting to give Don Jose a slap (not very PC!) - but have happy memories of this.

Can’t remember any detail from last time round but doubt Brook would have been happy.
All the famous 'tunes' seemed to be used up in the first act and the singer playing the Toreador was most amusing - but in a tragedy? Carmen had a husband (who knew?) and Don Jose became something of a serial killer.
The two ladies were fine singers and to hear such big voices in a small place was special.
The musical arrangement for a small group (12 musicians?) was well done. Friday night Antony Pappano was in the fifth row and I think someone told the young conductor during the interval. He was very animated after that.
It was a decent night out, but I wouldn’t be bothered about seeing it again.
