There was a ShowFilmFirst promotion offering free tickets to a sing-a-long screening today in a cinema in Leicester Square and a Twitter hosts show that just before the screening started Hugh Jackman came out and introduced it.

I saw the film once in the first week it opened and wasn’t too impressed, mainly because I thought the songs sounded like Kelly Clarkson rejects from the early 2000s. I am however so happy that a film like this has become so popular. It’s exactly what is needed to kick the film industry up the arse to start making musicals again. Here’s to hoping. Big Hollywood films were in a huge rutt around 10 years ago as it seemed to me that they thought the majority of film audiences had the taste of teenage boys. On that note, whatever happened to a good Romantic Comedy? I love that escapist nonsense. They’re no more nonsensical than Fast & Furious 17 or whatever number they’re on now. There hasn’t been a really great one since Nora Ephron died. I feel all Field of Dreams right now - if you make them, they will come.

I'm optimistic and subscribe to the theory that if they make a movie musical- original or adapted from a stage musical (and especially if it's a hit) then they'll make another one.
And I don't care what the studio executives think or say, there is still an audience for big screen musicals.

And it’s not like there’s a lack of stars that could carry one - heck, they basically sold Amazing Spider-Man 2 on Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield’s chemistry! Couldn’t someone do a thinly-veiled adaptation of Much Ado, cast Mila Kunis/Tessa Thompson/Janelle Monáe and Mahershala Ali/Daniel Kaluya/Dev Patel so it looks a bit less obviously the same old story, make All The Money and kickstart a trend?

Well I’m really pleased it’s been such a hit. Even though I didn’t particularly like it there must now be a better chance of more musical films being made. I suppose the contemporary style of music and dance used here are what have struck a chord with the younger audiences, so what next... In The Heights maybe?

Of course all the best Bollywood films include singing and dancing, which is probably one of the things I love most about them. So anyone missing their musical film fix could give one of those a try...

I heard that got put on hold because it was being produced by The Weinstein Company. The Wicked movie is forever in pre-production hell.

Another vote here to bring back the rom com! On topic - I'm pleased to see how well Showman is still doing. Hugh Jackman posted a video on Instagram showing him at the sing a long screening - lucky audience!

VERY late to the party on this one, but have finally seen the film today.
I had my reservations going in - primarily the songs which whilst totally suitable as pop hits, for me did not seem entirely appropriate for a story set in the 19th Century. Why not just base the film on the already exsiting musical? Also, I read comments that it somewhat whitewashes Barnum’s history.
However...
I LOVED it, and was completely floored by it. There was not a moment wasted, and the story zoomed by. The film was full of a theatrical energy, the musical numbers practically sizzled from the screen, and it seemed like a film totally unashamed that it was a movie musical, which was just so refreshing. Rather than something overly naturalistic, and speak-singing, I adored how this went all out, and was stylised. Hugh Jackman was practically unrecognisable from his awful turn in LES MIS, and it just shows what a charasmatic performer he can be when the material plays to his strengths. The songs were great in context, and I didn’t find it overly cloying that they were way out of their period. There was not a clunker among the songs, and each deserved, and suited their place in the film. I was teary and crying at more than a few moments in it.
Yes, the film could be verging on the cheesy in places, and it did probably whitewash the real Barnum, but it did have such a great message, and any mis-steps could easily be forgiven.
THIS is how a movie musical should be done.
4 stars.

Is this suitable for a 9 year old? I usually take the eldest to the cinema in the holidays and was wondering if I could get away with taking him to this instead of a random kids film of the week that I always hate?

I watched this a couple of nights ago and really didn't get much out of it. The score wasn't up to much, which I think is the root of most of my problems. The story was fine, didn't love it. I'm not really convinced it's treatment of the 'freak show' characters was all that empowering or uplifting. Just didn't work for me at all. It's interesting flicking through opinions that Les Mis gets dragged through the dirt a bit here, because overall I really like it (apart from Russell Crowe but that's another story) and wish there were more musicals with that sort of dramatic weight behind them. I liked La La Land an awful lot as well. Anyway hats off to the majority who seem to love this, I wish I did.

Its interesting because I've seen alot of people throw this and La La Land into the same conversation, perhaps due to the nature of the films, the chart success and so on, but I actually much preferred this to La La Land. I thinksnits been great to see Showman have more or a successful run in the long run, having won no major awards or anything like that. I think the score is alot better here than with La La Land too, which is attributed here with the insane level of success with the general public.

Its interesting because I've seen alot of people throw this and La La Land into the same conversation... It's because the vast majority of press and marketing has stated the very tenuous link between the two as "From the creators of La La Land", when in fact Pasek & Paul merely contributed to some of the lyrics of La La Land's 'City of Stars'. As a result there's alot of 'fans' very misguidedly assuming both productions are from the same production team, hence drawing comparisons. I much prefer Hurwitz's soundtrack for La La Land to Pasek & Paul's Showman, the latter which whilst having made a massive impression currently, will not age well having been engineered to fit into todays pop market.

It's also just one of the few recent movie musicals you can compare it to. Your point is very valid though, the best movie musicals have a timeless quality to them, which this absolutely lacks.

Now released on DVD in the UK.
20 weeks on, This is Me still is in the Top 25 on the midweek chart, with A Million Dreams and Never Enough still in the Top 50. The soundtrack still sits at #2 on the midweek charts.

Read somewhere it’s coming Broadway soon The Sun posted an article about it supposedly being confiremd to be happening and that development has begun but they had no sources appart from just saying “our sources” so I’d take it with a pinch of salt. I mean this is the newspaper that trash-talked Sheridan Smith just to sell papers and reported that Ariana Grande was supposedly taking over as “The Green Witch” in Wicked Broadway. I’m sure it will make its way to the stage at some point though which I shall be very excited to see. Bought the DVD today, can’t wait to see it again.

Hearing that a UK tour of the film with a live orchestra will be happening in the Autumn! Yeah I've heard the same. No doubt a sell out.

I finally watched the film this week with the eldest, who has been watching the videos on YouTube non-stop since we saw the film on Tuesday. Not a bad film, but if it introduces/ excites a younger audience about musical theatre then that can only be a good thing.
